In our third installment of the 8-Bit series, we interview Bitshifter (Joshua Davis) about creating music with a pair of Gameboys. The interview takes place at ‘Barcade’ in Brooklyn and also features Mike Rosenthal, Experimental Music Director at ‘The Tank.’

The festival showcases the use of the former heavyweights of computing such as the Commodore 64 and Amiga, the Atari ST and 2600, and the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy to create arresting music and visual art.

chipsounds is designed to faithfully reproduce the sound and style of vintage video game music and sound effects in plugin format, usable inside any sequencer or DAW, or as a standalone virtual instrument.

Plogue chipsounds will be offered at an introductory price of 75$ until November 1.

Research and analysis for this project has been made in house on Plogue’s large collection of cartridges, modified consoles and classic computers and also on the chips themselves using custom made circuit boards and low level 8 bit software code.

This is the teaser video for Kind of Bloop, an 8-bit tribute to Miles Davis’s classic jazz album Kind of Blue, released on the 50th anniversary of the album on August 17, 2009.

I was prepared to hate this album – but after listening to the previews at the album site, I’ve got to admit, it kind of swings.

About the project:

What would the pioneers of jazz sound like on a Nintendo Entertainment System? Coltrane on a C-64? Mingus on Amiga? For years, I’ve wondered what “chiptune jazz” would sound like, but there are only a tiny handful of jazz covers ever made.

To satisfy my curiosity — and commemorate the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” — I’ve asked five brilliant chiptune musicians to collaborate and reinvent the entire album in the 8-bit sound.

8 Bit Larynx demonstrates voice synthesis with an emulated ZX Spectrum 128 sound chip.

“8 bit larynx” performed at the NetVoTech concert (which was all about the musical use of voice+technology). In this track I use my voice directly to control an emulated ZX Spectrum 128 sound chip.

It’s shared with a Creative Commons license, which means you can copy it, use it in a podcast or share it. 

This represents a monumental effort by the musicians involved and by Little Scale in compiling the collection.

Bleepstreet likes 8-bit technology and groovy, filthy and raw data action. After a few years break Bleepstreet is now back to go beyond 8-bit machines as gimmicks. We make gritty electro, playful pop, slow harsh beats, techno, data rock, breakcore and so on, and we don’t see computers as mere slaves under our control.

The soundchip of a C-64 is a beast that cannot be fully tamed!

The album contains all of the material he played at a show on the 17th of October in Melbourne, Australia.
