Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald will launch the third volume in Deutsche Gramophone’s recomposed series this week, Recomposed By Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald.

Continuing the tradition of previous installments by Finish Saxophonist, Sound Artist and Contemporary Composer Jimi Tenor and Dub producer Matthias Arfmann, Craig and van Oswald were given access to original recordings from the prestigious vault of the label and asked to offer their personal interpretation of the material.

In this particular case, the blueprints for the recomposition process were recordings by Ravel’s Bolero and Rapsodie espagnole as well as Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

The music for “Recomposed By Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald” took shape over the course of a full year. During this time, the musicians met both in Detroit and Berlin, shaping loops as a basis for improvisations. Striving for a spontaneous sound, they then chose unedited cuts from these sessions to build the album. As a natural consequence, the resulting tracks are neither completely typical for the solo work of Carl Craig and Moritz can Oswald, nor are they obviously connected to the originals by Mussorgsky and Ravel.

Rather, the music finds its own distinct niche between contemporary club music and classical concert halls, even though it tends more towards the former than the latter.

Recomposed By Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald will be available as a regular CD and a limited Double LP.

      something to think about

If you want to make someone feel emotion, you have to make them let go. Listening to something is an act of surrender. — Brian Eno
