7up Live is a Java application that combines 8 different monome applications into one interface.  With it, your monome communicates with Ableton Live 7 via MIDI and allows MLR-like functionality along with other goodies like sliders, sequencing melodies, creating patterns of beats, saving/loading/queueing your songs, and more.

This is another very nice Ableton Live tutorial from Mark Mosher, this time looking at Ableton Live 8 + APC40 + Remote SL controllerism:

This video is a step-by-step tutorial describing Ableton Live 8’s new custom parameter mapping methodology. The video illustrates how to map select parameters from VST plug-ins into devices and then control these parameters via the Novation Remote SL and the new Akai APC40.

The video also discusses how to add and access more than 8 parameters. Lastly, the video covers use of instrument racks and macro controls to map parameters from multiple devices to an 8 knob group.

This video demos using an XBox 360 controller with Reaktor:

Take a copy of glove pie, an x box controller and a copy midi yoke and a copy of Reaktor and your away.

Glove pie converts any inout to any output, in the case x box controller signals to midi signals, midi yoke then routes this into reaktor and a sample synth type machine built in there does the rest.

left analogue stick controls the synth pitch, buttons fire various one shot samples, operate gates for oscisllators or trigger a loop, the right analogue stick controllers a filter.

This is a nice demo of what you can do, reusing mass produced gear for music – and also that using it to make msuic is a lot harder than Rockband.

This is a fun video of Gustavo Bravetti DJing with alternative controllers at Tribaltech 2009. 

There’s often a complete disconnect between what you see at electronic music events and what you hear. For anyone who’s thrilled to a pyrotechnic solo, this can leave you wanting. 

Or just leave you wondering WTF the DJ is doing. 

Kudos to Bravetti for working on closing this gap, in some very creative ways.

Here is technique using the ECHO effect in Traktor Pro version 1.1 and the VSI-100 SE mapping file number 1_8

This video starts out pretty horrible. Then it goes downhill.

Everything about the video seems bad: the filming, the script and the rock ‘n’ roll rhythm demo guy.

“This is rock and roll!”

But then something interesting happens.

The Creative demo guy gets his freak on and does an Inagaddadavida on the keyboard that will make your eyes pop out of your head and bounce off your computer screen.

Did this guy foreshadow the controllerism movement? You make the call.
