The long anticipated electronic music collaboration between AD Music’s David Wright and DiNs Ian Boddy has been confirmed as Shifting Sands and is set for release on 5th September 2009 at the Derby Music Festival.

There are 5 tracks: Comets, Shifting Sands, Still Motion, Endless Terrain and Halcyon.

Some of the album will be premiered during the Boddy, Hoffmann-Hoock & Wright evening performance at the event. The album is currently in post production and sound bites and more information will be available soon.

The video on this is pretty static – but it captures a live synth jam by Alessandro Cortini, Peter Grenader, David Wright & Steve Roach at Camp Tape Op, Tucson 2007.

Negativland Meets David Wright

AD Music has announced the relaunch of electronic music festivals in Derby, with the AD 2009 Electronic Music Festival:

It’s 20 years since AD Music was founded and so an electronic music festival seemed a suitable event to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The midlands, and Derby in particular, is considered by many people to be the UK hub of electronic music and it is where our early concerts were held in 1993 and our first festival was held in 1996, so there is a nice symmetry. The excellent “Awakenings Evening” held every two months is doing a great job as the only regular electronic music event in the area, with the Hampshire Jam ensuring interest is kept bubbling in the South. In Europe there is the continued efforts of Groove’s e-live and e-day, while Germany is seeing renewed electronic music activity with the excellent electronic circus event in Beilefeld. So it’s our hope that this event will help rejuvenate interest in an annual all day electronic music festival and if the Derby event is a financial success, then it is AD Music’s intention to organize another next year.

So, if electronic music is your thing, which it probably is if you’re reading this, then support us in bringing back a Derby electronic music festival. Being a record label, we will always seek to have at least one of our acts on the bill. But as can be seen from the strong 2009 line up, it is not exclusively an AD Music artist festival, and it won’t be in the future either.

About the venue: The Guildhall has seating for 240, of which 80 are in the balcony. The balcony seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so please book early to avoid disappointment if the balcony is your preference. There are coffee facilities and a bar at the venue. Food is available from the many local restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the Guildhall.

• Bekki Williams will be releasing a trilogy of instrumental music albums based on Dante’s Inferno starting in 2009. Apparently there will be three albums released over a 12 month period, so one every 4 months, starting late in 2009, which means the releases will go on into 2010. 
• Electronic music composer David Wright will be performing in the USA in 2009 with guitarist Klaus Cosmic Hoffmann. The first concert will be at the Gathering concerts on Saturday April 18th. Although no further concerts have been announced yet, it is rumoured that a Wisconsin concert is being discussed. 
• The new Robert Fox studio album Evergreen is now available. They call the album a “Majestic tour de force”. Robert Fox is one of the leading UK electronic music composers and he also is -founder of the electronic rock band Code Indigo. 

It’s another great release on the AD Label, which is home to Robert Fox, Code Indigo, Ashok Prema, Richard Bone and many others.

Momentum is a studio reworking of music Wright performed at a recent Gatherings concert in the US. Here’s how Wright explains the genesis of the album:

“The music on Momentum came out of a 2007 concert in Philadelphia, USA, where I intended to premier music from a new studio album Dreams and Distant Moonlight.

But things didn’t go according to plan and the day before the concert I changed the set in favour of a mainly improvised one. The decision was an instinctive artistic reaction to the wonderful surroundings, people and venue that prompted a desire to experiment and do something completely different for the occasion.

It was also helped somewhat by having access to a powerful Alesis Andromeda A6 synth, (courtesy of Radio host and concert organizer Chuck van Zyl) which helped take my rehearsals into new musical territory.

And so, quite unintentionally, Momentum was conceived and presented in my first Stateside appearance”

Wright packs about 70 minutes of music, made up 13 tracks, into the album. The tracks flow into each other, forming two larger sections. The music ranges from ambient music and environmental sound to percolating downtempo electronica.

Throughout the album, Wright explores beautiful, complex electronic sounds. But, while much of the music is mellow and relaxing, Wright avoids the trap of getting overly sweet.

Two tracks on the first half of the album, Desire – Parts I & II, are so gently and lushly orchestrated that you just want to wallow in the sound of it. But Wright also skillfully weaves in sections like Panic Attack that are edgier and darker.

While the first half of the album leans more towards symphonic electronica, the second half contrasts ambient pieces like Secrets In The Mist with the more driving, modern synth music sound of Momentum.

While I hear shades of Blade Runner era Vangelis on this album, especially on tracks like Panic Attack and Momentum 3, Wright’s own distinct voice shapes the entire release.

Momentum builds on what Wright’s done previously, but it also moves his music forward, with some of his most sensual music ever. The music has beautiful melodies and lush sounds, but they are balanced with surprises in his arrangements and sounds that border on noise.

I really like David Wright’s Momentum – to my ears, it’s his best release yet.

On this album, Wright & Fox are joined by Dave Massey (production, rhythm and bass programming) and Andy Lobban (lead and rhythm guitars). The addition of Lobban makes this collection different from other Code Indigo releases, with guitars placed front and center on many tracks.

Chill is an excellent collection of downtempo numbers. The tracks have the haunting appeal of early Pink Floyd and Vangelis’ work for Blade Runner. Filtered vocals frequently burble around the mix, and echo effects take sounds from left to right speakers.

Throughout the CD, the synthesizer work is great, moving from ambient effects to melodic space music seamlessly. Lobban’s guitar work adds an emotional pull to the melodies and a sense of restrained power.

Highlights of the CD are Chill, a beautiful mellow track that backs a new age piano solo with gorgeous airy synth orchestration; Vapour Tales, which has a murky Blade Runner feel to it; and the excellent Culture Shift, which combines sampled “found sounds”, world instruments, tasty synth work and ambient guitar effects. Code Indigo also uses several melodies as recurring themes throughout the CD, and a consistent sound palette, giving the CD a nice sense of continuity.

Code Indigo’s Chill is a great collection of synth music that should appeal to fans of new age, ambient and space rock. Check the Code Indigo site for track samples and purchase options.
