2009 Summer NAMM Show: This video, via soundonsoundvideo, captures an overview of the Sony PCM-M10 digital audio recorder.

“The PCM-M10 is ideal for budget-conscious professionals who still need high-quality sound capabilities,” said Sony’s Karl Kussmaul.

The PCM-M10 shares several features and design elements with the PCM-D1 and PCM-D50, including the same rugged construction and cool design. The new recorder is 96 kHz/24-bit capable with electret condenser stereo microphones, 4 GB of internal flash memory and a microSD/Memory Stick Micro (M2) Slot.

Key features of the PCM-M10 recorder include

• a built-in speaker
• cross-memory recording
• digital pitch control
• digital limiter
• low-cut filter
• track mark functions
• a 5-second pre-recording buffer and
• A-B repeat capability.

The PCM-M10 comes supplied with Sound Forge Audio Studio Recorder Edition software.

The PCM-M10 includes a USB high-speed port for simple uploading and downloading of native .WAV or .MP3 format recorded files to and from Windows PC or Macintosh computers. The M10 offers durable metal construction and long battery life using conventional AA alkaline batteries.

The PCM-M10 portable recorder is planned to be available in October, at a
suggested list price of $399.

Samson representatives are promoting the Zoom R16 as “three production tools in one device“:

• a multi-track recorder
• an audio interface and
• a control surface.

The R16 runs on six AA batteries. Recording onto SD memory allows for up to 32 GBs of audio files, and lightens the weight of the recorder. The R16 connects to the user’s computer via USB, and comes bundled with Cubase LE audio software.

The Zoom R16 retails for $399, making it a cheap all-in-one multitrack recording solution, especially for location work.

The Zoom R16 will be available in stores “in the next few weeks,” according to a company representative, and will retail for $399.

The free software update, version 1.10, is being quality tested and will be available for download from the TASCAM website at the end of April. The DR-100 now supports sampling rates from 44.1k to 96kHz, 24-bit or 16-bit WAV recording and MP3 recording.

The TASCAM DR-100 has a pair of XLR mic ins with phantom power for adding pro condenser microphones. In addition, the DR-100 has four built-in electret condenser mics – two cardioid and two omni – and a built-in speaker for playback.

It’s powered either through an included Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery or AA batteries. aAnalog line inputs and outputs are also available, as well as a mic stand mounting hole for recording flexibility.

To sync recordings, Easy Recorder has a built-in Web server that runs over WiFi. This isn’t an elegant solution, but it works fine.

Sonoma Wire Works has launched FourTrack (App Store link), a multitrack audio recorder for the iPhone and iPod touch (2nd Generation).

FourTrack works with the iPhone built-in microphone, a headset mic or an iPod touch with a third-party mic and headphones.

WiFi sync allows FourTrack recordings to be downloaded to any desktop computer with a browser. Tracks can then be loaded into any recording software (DAW) to continue working on songs.

Note that FourTrack won’t let you record four tracks to the iPhone at the same time. That would require a four-channel audio interface for the iPhone…..which would be awesome.  

The iPhone continues to get more and more sophisticated applications for music and audio work. The platform is evolving so rapidly, though, that it may be early to commit to any particular app.

Note: MeTeoR uses uncompressed WAV files in order to achieve its speed. Audio data is recorded at 44.1Kb/s (CD quality) and require large amounts of storage space. It is therefore recommended that you use a high speed SD/CF card to store recorded materials. A 1GB SD card for instance will store approximately 6 hours of recordings.

Version 1.07 introduces a new ‘Synchronize Audio Threads’ option which when enabled will help reduce the variable latency problem on most devices.

Numark has introduced the iDEC, a professional rack-mount solution offering playback and recording for iPod.

iDEC’s Universal Dock for iPod permits playback of audio and video from any docking iPod through integrated outputs. It can also record incoming audio in real time at CD-quality 44.1 kHz sampling rate, directly to the docked iPod.

The Numark iDec is expected to be available Q3, 2008. Pricing has not been announced.

At the 2008 Winter NAMM Show, BOSS announced the BR-900CD Version 2.

With Version 2., BOSS has added the GT-Pro quality COSM guitar amp model, a new drum-editing software application (downloadable from the web), and 500 minutes of recording time via 1GB Compact Flash.

The BR-900CD features an 8-track recorder with phantom-powered mic inputs and built-in CD burner, 46 types of BOSS GT-Pro class COSM amps, pro-quality effects for every instrument type, plus mastering and pitch correction, and a programmable drum machine with a Rhythm Editor software (free download for PC and Mac).

2008 NAMM Show: Roland anounced the new CD-2e SD/CD recorder.

With high-performance stereo-speaker, stereo mic, and CD-R/RW drive built-in, the CD-2e offers out-of-the-box recording capability. Weighing in at less than 3 lbs (less than most laptops), measuring 2 inches thick, and having the ability to run on six AA batteries, the CD-2e is an extremely portable device.

The CD-2e comes equipped with a wireless remote for off-unit control of playback and recording, and an EASY GUIDE button steps first-time recording novices through operations with simple-to-follow instructions in six different languages.

The CD-2e can take up to 8GB SDHC memory cards for over 12 hours of recording time.

Additional options include the CB-CD2E semi-hard shell carrying bag and the CS-15R high-sensitive, omni-directional external stereo microphone.
