Giorgio Moroder has a special place in the history of electronic music, because of his genre-inspiring classic track I Feel Love, with Donna Summer and Pete Bellotte.

When Brian Eno first heard I Feel Love, he told David Bowie “This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years,” which it did. The track has been covered by dozens of artists and imitated, either directly or indirectly, by thousands.

Moroder’s version of the original Battlestar Galactica soundtrack, on the other hand, has been lost to obscurity.

Until now:

Based on “here to eternity”. This was all going swell until the ESQ1 drifted out of pitch near the end (not my bum notes for a change lol) Some Human league influence here too:)

This is a synth jam on the Giorgio Moroder/Donna Summer disco classic I Feel Love.

It’s a nice demo of what the Pro-One can do – but it also highlights how different the filter on the Pro-One sounds compared to the Moog synthesizer of the original.

Sequential Circuits Pro-One Analog Synthesizer with different settings (OSC-Sync, PWM, VCF, Envelope…); internal sequencer is triggered by the Roland TR-808: drums: Roland TR-808

For me one of the best monophonic analog synths ever.

In a small study from the University of Illinois medical school, doctors and students maintained close to the ideal number of CPR chest compressions per minute while listening to the disco hit from the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever.

The American Heart Association recommends 100 chest compressions per minute, more than most people realize, study author Dr. David Matlock said Thursday. He found that Stayin’ Alive, which has a way of getting stuck in your head anyway, can help with that.

Dr. Matthew Gilbert, a 28-year-old medical resident, was among participants in the University of Illinois study this past spring. Gilbert said he was surprised the song worked as well as it did.

“I heard a rumor that Another One Bites the Dust works also, but it didn’t seem quite as appropriate,” Gilbert adds.

Cell Phone Disco is an experimental installation made out of sensor equipped LEDs.

Here’s the artists’ description:

Cell Phone Disco is a playful experimental installation made out of ?ashing cells. By multiplication of a mobile phone gadget, only slightly altered consumer product, we created a space to experience the invisible body of the mobile phone.

Flashing cells basically consist of one or more LEDs, battery and a sensor that detects electromagnetic (EM) radiation transmitted by an active mobile phone. When the sensor detects EM waves it sets off the LEDs to ?ash for a couple of seconds. In general the ?ashing cells are enclosed in a plastic casing on a strap and sold as a fashion accessory for a mobile phone.

The Cell Phone Disco installation has two parts:

MOBILE AURA

Flashing cells with sensors of higher sensitivity are used to detect electromagnetic radiation of active mobile phone in a range of approximately a meter. This way a sort of aura appears around the phone, revealing a part of it’s invisible body. While the user moves around talking on his phone, this aura follows the conversation as a light shadow through the space.

MOBILE DRAWING

Much less sensitive cells are used to create a canvas for an inkless marker. The LEDs get activated only by an extreme proximity of the electromagnetic source. Moving the phone close to the cells therefore leaves a trace of light, an temporary electromagnetic drawing.

Created by Ursula Lavrencic and Auke Touwslager

Here’s the official blurb on Moby’s latest, Last Night:

After the meditative electronica of 2002’s 18 and the singer-songwriter moves of 2005’s Hotel, moby returns to the dance floor with a vengeance on his new album Last Night, released on 31st March 2008. Spanning hands-in-the-air, Smiley-faced rave anthems, cosmic Giorgio Moroder-styled Euro-disco, hip-hop both old school and underground, and downtempo, end-of-the-night ambience, Last Night is a dance music tour de force that looks back at moby’s deep roots in the club scene at the same time as it embraces the future.

Reacting against the downbeat quality of previous albums like Hotel, 18 and the blockbuster Play, moby “wanted to make an album that was a little more playful, a little more reflective of [his] life as it actually is.” While moby has garnered a bit of a reputation as a joyless militant as a result of the way he once expressed his beliefs and has been frequently characterized by the British music press as a teetotaling vegan Jesus freak, he says, “That’s just not who I am. I’m more likely than not to stay out until 5am drinking with my friends.”

In fact, Last Night is conceptually structured like one of these epic nights out, moving from the building excitement of the early evening to peak-time euphoria to 2 am confusion and the blissful peace of the early morning New York City sunrise. moby hesitantly admits that Last Night is in fact something of a concept album as it attempts to condense an entire night out into a 60-minute album. But banish any thoughts of deaf, dumb and blind pinball savants or prog rockers sailing topographic oceans because the concept doesn’t get in the way of the dance floor imperative and merely serves to give a subtle narrative arc to Last Night’s exploration of the energy of nightlife.

Fun concept for an album, and it sounds like it may be a return to form for Moby.

Every day, we’re bringing you great free music. Give it a listen, download it if you like it, and check out the artists at their sites.

Electronica duo Cherry Bikini, Sophie Boscallini and Armand Abagliani, specialize in sexy dance music that pushes buttons and pushes limits. Their music is catchy dance electronica, in the vein of Soft Cell, Basement Jaxx, Goldfrapp, and Lords of Acid. They describe it as “cosmopolitan electronica for the whole world.”

Their songs often deal with sexuality with a matter-of-fact explicitness. You can find out more about Sophie and Armand in our Cherry Bikini interview.

They’re beavering away at their latest album, but we’re pretty sure it will be about sex and dancing. In the meantime, you can check out Badly Behaved, below, and visit their site to download more tracks and preview their two albums

According to Cerrone, Save the Disco! is not another cheesy Disco Night, but rather, a true celebration of the genre’s glory days and how it’s influenced modern dance and electronic music.

“Conceptually, we’ll embark on a journey where artists from different musical backgrounds will join NYC talent DJ Angola (resident DJ for Sweet Spot events and also Recall Lab parties at Hiro Ballroom) to become ONE for a night: from Afro Disco oldies and chosen 80’s tunes to Funky House beats and bad ass San Francisco Deep House.”

Each month guests attending the event will have the privilege to welcome artists such as Lisa Shaw (scheduled down to perform Thursday, March 8), Sharon Jones and Jay-J, who are already booked. Dressed up staff, themed décor, drag queens and unique performances are planned for each month.

The goal of Save the Disco! is to build a regular party where guests become participants rather than spectators. Guests are highly encouraged to show up with the most extravagant 70s’ outfit – Afros and bell bottoms pants are a must-have!

More info at the Save the Disco! MySpace.
