This theme is somewhat like the symphonic theme I uploaded in February of this year, yet it is also quite different

The 3 rows of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer drive 4 voices. The first voice you hear is one Q106 VCO through the CGS Steiner Synthacon VCF and the Oakley Equinoxe phaser. The second voice one Q106 VCO through the Q150 transistor ladder filter. These first 2 voices have the same 4 step sequence running on row 3. Then you hear the self build Modular running on row 2 and after that the Creamware Minimax ASB running on row 1. These 2 voices start each with a 4 step sequence which after a while is varied between 5 and 8 steps manually. Then the bass and the theme are played on the Waldorf Q keyboard with a PPG-like sound. The Mellotron-like strings are played on the Roland XP-80. The solo is performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1.

I noticed the video is gradually getting out of sync with the sound; I don’t know what caused that and I also didn’t know how to fix that when editing the clip. So, sorry for that.

Just trying out some of the features on the tiny but very nice analog synthesizer Dark Energy. This is all very non musical but perhaps interesting in some way. You get to hear the superfast LFO’s in action and some filter tweaking as well.

The Doepfer was sequenced from an Analoguw Solutions Oberkorn III.

Sunday Synth Jam: Here’s a little something for the fans of Berlin School electronic music – a nice sequenced synth jam, via attorks:

This theme is inspired by an arpeggiator from the Waldorf Q keyboard which I programmed as sequence to be performed by the Q. At first you hear a bass-like sound from the Creamware MiniMax ASB. After that the Synthesizers.com Modular and the self built Modular are added. At last the sequence from the Waldorf Q Keyboard is added. By varying the decay on the Q the sound becomes more lively.

The accompaniment is played on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the Roland XP-80.

Here’s a quick test of how much a synth geek you are.

Doepfer Dark Energy sequenced by Elektron Machinedrum.

Using the Dark Energy as an acid synth, the Machinedrum provides all the drums, the accents and slides are sequenced using velocity and pitchbend.

No compression or EQ just a bit of space echo on the Doepfer.

A quick tune to demo this very powerful little monosynth. ALL sounds come from the Doepfer, even the chords, as they are multitracked. Recorded into Logic 8 with slight processing (EQ, compression and reverb). In the video I only tweak the bass sound.

I totally dig this synth. It has a great sounding VCO and very snappy envelopes. IMO it has much more balls than the DSI Evolver!

Test drive of the Doepfer Dark Energy (right channel), MIDI sequenced by a Future Retro Revolution (left channel). Ambient dronespace and mixdown provided by Blacet/Metalbox/Wiard/Cynthia modular synthesizer system. The Dark Energy uses the Popcorn parameter setup described in the Doepfer manual (page 38): VCO and LFOs off, with the VCF set to self-resonate with a simple A/D envelope.

We saw the entire range, from noise boxes to full on modular systems in plenty of different formats. If it makes noise, we’re into it.

It looks like the event was a great synth meetup.

Unfortunately, meetups like these still appear to be a guaranteed way to avoid any chance of meeting women involved in music. Or as Stringbot notes, “Who forgot to invite the girls?”

Sunday Synth Jam: Velvet Acid Christ jams with a Future Retro Revolution driving his modular synthesizer system.

“Just thought I would record a patch I made this afternoon on my modular system,” explains Devine. “Bits and pieces running through the H-3000 DS/E Eventide Harmonizer.”

Nick Batt at Sonic State gave the Doepfer Dark Energy monophonic analog synthesizer a workout and shares his insight in his review:

I really liked the Dark Energy and was pleasantly surprised by the range of sounds, the VCO waves are decent enough for most things, apart from perhaps true earth shaking bass – I particularly like the Pulse Width Mod and dirty sounds you can make by modulating the VCF with very high frequencies via the patch chords.

But the synth is by no means limited to just this kind of stuff, bell-like FM and other crazy sounds are also just a tweak away. Speaking of which, this really brought home to me how much I have been missing actually tweaking real knobs, the fact that this is so small, means you can have it close to hand for when you just need a tweak fix.

Nick’s review has me taking another look at the Dark Energy.

Doepfer / Livewire modulesI just stuck a bunch of patch cables together to see what would happen. The bass drum sound came from the A105 24db lowpass filter (very fat)Osillators and noise was used as perccussion sounds and were processed thu the Livewire 105 ssm VFC – I used the hp ouput – very gnarley sounding

Sunday Synth Jam: Modulator ESP at Relativity: A short section from Jez Creek’s solo set at the Relativity concert on 23-6-9.

The gig marked the live debut of his new Doepfer modular, used here to create a lot of the FX. The set was a mix of ambient and uptempo, all improvised, and even including a ’style’ request from a member of the audience.

It looks like MOTK 2009 was a great chance to see incredible and rare synth gear and to meet some of the people responsible for the renaissance of analog synthesis.

Doepfer sequence done only with VCO (A-111) + quad LFO (A-143-2) + Xtreme filter (A-106-1) while JP4 goes into Doepfer XP Multimode Filter (A-106-6)

It sounds just as it was recorded directly to minidisc with Kaoss Pad 3 on the echoes.
