Ever wondered what it was like making electronic music in the late 1950s?

Now you can find out – without having to learn tape-splicing.

Gleetchplug has announced Berna – a “vintage electronic studio simulation.”

It’s got reel-to-reel recorders, oscillators, tape delay – what more do you need to make electronic music?

I can say no more at this time – but you may want to look for a lab coat.

This video captures the metamorphosis of an electronic music studio.

via grauoliv:

So, here is the main metamorphosis of my studio, which took place in january 2009. I had to give up the camera position because I got new windows and my tripod was standing right at the window for making the pix. Well, some little adjusting of the studio is still to be done. A studio introduction 2009 will follow soon.

The ambient music was already recorded with the new setup and features the clavia nord modular g2, alesis micron, access virus indigo, moog little phatty and the akai mpc 500. The original track is about 9 minutes.

Alec Empire – Making of ‘Shivers’ + Interview

via THVStudios:

After 2008s’, The Golden Foretaste of Heaven, Alec Empire releases Shivers, a 7 track mini album that serves up as a little taster for his highly anticipated new album out later this year.

This is the most recent output from The Hellish Vortex, the production team founded by Alec Empire and Nic Endo.

Last year, Empire announced a change in direction, a departure from his signature digital hardcore sound and called it The Sound of New Berlin. This sonic revolution has brought about an influx of hipster collaborations in the form of Raveonettes, who got their single remixed by Nic Endo and Alecs mutual pairing with one, Patrick Wolf, whos Berlin musings have led to the hotly tipped single, Vultures.

Instructables has published a short guide to building a music studio in an apartment:

You cannot build a sound studio without first understanding some theory. The most important part to understand is that sound proofing (blocking the sound, so others don’t hear you and you don’t hear them) is very different from sound treatment (making your room sound good). Since this studio was built for mixing sound and music for film and TV in a residential coop apartment building in NYC, both sound proofing and treatment had to be near perfect. It also had to look good for clients… on a very tight budget.

In this instructable rather than a tutorial on the actual construction I will discuss the design, with links to the materials I used or other resources.

The guide has a lot of info on sound proofing, sound treatment and also a little about using green materials, where possible.

      something to think about

What matters in modern music is not the part you can write down, the words and the tune, but the rest – the texture, the atmosphere, the references and associations. — Brian Eno
