Articles about famous synth solo:

Remember Frankenstein, Edgar Winter’s iconic monster-synth jam from 1973?

The bad boy is still rocking it – and he made a visit to the Dallas House of Blues Music Hall stage to prove it.

According to the Dallas Morning News, “It was a monstrous tour de force. That may sound like a cliché, but it was true.”

Here’s what they had to say about Winter’s current take on Frankenstein:

The Beaumont native strapped keyboards around his neck and let his synthesizer wail. Then the drums pounded. Pretty soon the guitar was screaming and the bass was thumping. Before it ended, Mr. Winter had done a drum duel and played his trusty saxophone midway through the tune.

At 61, Edgar Winter, still sporting his long white hair and beard on his albino skin, remains a marvel to watch.

The cosmic sound effects, a signature aspect of the influential instrumental rock staple, led us back to the stomping groove characterizing the enduring 1973 hit.

I’ve never had a chance to see Winter live, but this classic clip of Winter doing Frankenstein tells me he’s not to be missed, if the chance ever comes up:

Interesting factoid: the title Frankenstein has nothing to do with the electronic sounds used in the song – but comes from the fact that song was originally close to ten minutes long, and had to be pieced together from many different sections of recording tape to make it short enough to be released as the b-side to Hangin’ Around.

      something to think about

The whole point of art, as far as I’m concerned, is that art doesn’t make any difference. And that’s why it’s important. Take film: you can have quite extreme emotional experiences watching a movie, but they stop as soon as you walk out of the cinema. You can see people being hurt, but even though you feel those things strongly, you know they’re not real. — Brian Eno
