Little did we realize how many of our artists would want to contribute and how excellent the music would be. As a result, this release has grown to encompass four full discs of sublime ambience, with more than four hours of music end to end. We’re very proud of the result.

Röyksopp has announced a new remix contest:

You can download their latest track, Tricky, Tricky, for free using the SoundCloud player above. You can also download the parts, remix the track and enter their remix contest, which offers copies of Ableton Live as the prize.

Details on the contest are available at the Röyksopp site. Make sure you check out the contest rules for the legal low-down; while you can download the track and its parts for free, Röyksopp retains distribution rights for Tricky, Tricky and remixes based on the track.

The title is taken from a book written by Olaf Stapledon, a future history of mankind.

Daniel Davis of Carl Sagan’s Ghost explains:

“I like the title because it lacks the word ‘The’ before ‘Darkness’, adding a poetic nuance to the phrase. Without the article ‘the’, the Darkness is indefinite, more vague and nebulous. It’s not The Darkness, it’s just darkness. But The Light is different; it’s a definitive, and singular thing, something to move towards. I think the title reflects the album’s concept.

“Yes, this is a concept albums. But aren’t most ambient releases? It’s my attempt at putting to music a journey from the realms of darkness into the realms of light and the stuff in between. At least this is what it means to me. Music has always been an intensely spiritual thing for me. But music needs to do more than edify the soul; it also needs to charge the mind, and move the body. I hope I’ve accomplished all of these aspects with this album.”

This is a monome 64 running Stretta’s Polygome App. Polygome is triggering a recording of Elliott’s vocal which was “sliced to MIDI” in Ableton Live 8.

This song has an interesting story. You see -  I traveled back in time with my music production laptop and a pile of virtual synthesizers to score a 50’s Sci-Fi B-Movie. “They Walk Among Us” is the result.

Will any humans survive? You’ll have to listen to find out. Extra points if you can tell me the Morse code message in the end of the song.

So If you like theremins, 50’s SCI-FI B-Movies, flying saucer sounds, big beats and ear candy I think you’ll really dig this track.  It’s been a lot of fun to put compose and mix – especially the creation of all the special effects.

It’s a fun track that calls out for a music video!

The CS80 is considered by many to be the greatest analog synthesizer ever created. It’s a heavy, unwieldy beast – but it also offers fantastic sounds and incredible expressive control of the sound.

The Yamaha CS80 is also familiar to many as the signature synth of Vangelis.

Here’s what Finnie has to say about Bartesho:

Here is an album called ‘Bartesho’. I’m currently offering it for free here on my site for a limited time.

It was improvised using nothing but a Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer and some reverb to add some “space” to the recording. I hope you enjoy it. The mp3’s are encoded at 360kbs for better quality.

Finnie says that his influences include Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Cluster, Neu!, Can, Ashra, Harmonia, Boredoms, Acid Mothers Temple. To my ears, though, Bartosho brings to mind Vangelis’ love it or hate it albums Beabourg and Invisible Connections. The album alternates very mellow ambient sections with sections that feature edgier sounds.

The EP is comprised of four tracks full of hazy drones, dense textures and milky warmth.

Drift carries a solemn, and sometimes desolate timbre evoked through its processed and swollen tones. Additionally, a spirituality is evoked through the music’s lonely but peaceful sonics and through its inhabitance of a seemingly surreal expansive space.

Eluder (aka Electricwest) has crafted this rich depth and antiqued sonic atmosphere in each of the four tracks using a complex but still minimal sound.

Marko Ahtisaari’s Music For Airplanes is a lovely long ambient piece, in the spirit of Brian Eno.

It was originally composed for the wedding of two friends.

The piece was composed for two iPod shuffles and two pairs of muji speakers. Two different sets of short composed sections were loaded onto the iPod shuffles and the players were put in shuffle mode. The resulting generative piece is unique and lasts until the players need to be recharged.

“To me this is a simple exciting new way to make light-weight sound installations,” explains Ahtisaari.

The 60×60 Buzz Compilation is a collection of tracks from people using Jeskola Buzz as their music platform.

The release, organized by n3wjack, features an hour of music: 60 tracks, each 60 seconds in length, all produced using the modular software music studio Jeskola Buzz or one of its clones.

The artists participating in this compilation are members of the various online Buzz communities such as buzzchurch, buzzmachines, buzzmusic and other mailing lists and fora.

All this, and a 24 minute bonus compilation containing more buzz goodness containing tracks from people who sent in multiple submissions for the original 60×60 compilation.

Best of all, it’s all free and it’s licensed with a Creative Commons license, so you can download it and share it without any headaches.

Ghostly Swim, a free 19-song collection, explores the Avant-Pop style that the Ann Arbor/New York City label has been been championing for the past 9 years. Ghostly Swim features artists like Matthew Dear, Dabrye, Tycho and Aeroc and features new signings like UK cult band The Chap and NYC producer Michna.

The free collection also includes friends of the label like School Of Seven Bells, and Detroit’s Deastro, Milosh (Plug Research), FLYamSAM (Warp’s Flying Lotus and SAMIYAM), and Dark Party (Mush).
