Cinema Du Lyon is podcast project that features experimental ambient soundscapes in podcast and video podcast form.

Here’s their description:

Cinema du Lyon are not from Lyon … they are from your head, the way films and TV effect our lives all the time. Playback from scenes witnessed on the screen. The dialogue leeches into our living narratives, taking it over at times. The found scraps of speech resemble toast crumbs upon an audio duvet, the harshness and the irritability, the sweetness and the sadism.

IndieFeed is an example of how people are using podcasting to share new indie electronica music. Each IndieFeed podcast episode features one song from an indie musician. There are podcast feeds for several different categories, like Electronica, Hip-Hop and Indie-Pop, so that you can subscribe and just get the types of music that you’re interested in.While it’s not a traditional radio-style “show”, it’s a great way to find about new music.

Monotonik is a net music label that releases music exclusively online in the mp3 format. Monotonik has released over 300 tracks from a variety of talented idm-ish electronic musicians from all over the world.

All their releases are distributed under a Creative Commons license, which means you can download them and share them with your friends.

Exegene is an independent netlabel set up to promote the works of unsigned drum’n'bass and jungle artists worldwide. They are a non-commercial organization, releasing singles, EPs and LPs by artists in MP3 format.

Little Things Count is a free CD of minimal ambient electronica by Kernel32. It’s released on OpenLab Records, a label that releases music under a Creative Commons license, which means you can legally download and share it.

Description: “There are some things that my friends have done for me in the past.. not huge favours or anything, just said somethin or done something nice for me and i always look back and remember it. that’s where the title comes from. This album might be dedicated to my friends… there are tracks on it that mean different things to me. The period i wrote the album in was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, some days i’d be a bit depressed and fragile, some days i’d be happy. So thats where the general mood of the album comes from. My music start off as mind and develop a little into instinct i think.”

Archaic Horizon Records is a cool label focused on the experimental and eclectic. It releases music under the Creative Commons license, which means you can download the music legally, copy it and even share it as you like.

There most recent release is a free EP called Distancing, by a New Zealand band called Sora Shima.

“It’s full of lush reverb drones and textures made purely with broken guitars, a $50 MP3 player with built-in microphone and software,” explains Sora Shima guitarist Jae Lurman.

The four song EP’s title, Distancing, alludes to a beautiful naturalistic setting free from any disrupting inhabitants. Yet all of the songs are given an edgy quality with the occasional hollow or sharp tones increasing tension. These agitated sounds are eventually subdued by their softly moving counterparts composed of minimal textural drones.

Slave is a great track from modern soul artist Nadir’s Distorted Soul 2.0 cd. If you’re not familiar with Nadir, think Lenny Kravitz with better lyrics.

You cut me like a razor blade
And still I can’t get over you”

Nadir is doing what a lot of musicians are doing now – offering free MP3s at his site to let you try out his music. You can listen to the original of Slave, below, get more free MP3s at his site and, if you like his stuff, check out his commercial releases.

Nadir also recently sent us a copy of his Slave: The Remixtape, which is a CD compilation of remixes of Slave. It’s a fantastic example of what remixers can do when given good material.

The remixes take the original into completely new territory. Discoslave is a full-on house remix; the Distorted Soul Rock Radio edit has more of a classic rock feel; the Power X-Change Flip version turns it into a trance/techno number; the Hip-Hop Radio Edit strips it down and adds a rap; and the Covert Ops Mix takes it into minimal techno territory.

If you’re into remixes, Nadir’s Slave: The Remixtape is a tour-de-force of remixing.

Electronica duo Cherry Bikini, Sophie Boscallini and Armand Abagliani, specialize in sexy dance music that pushes buttons and pushes limits. Their music is catchy dance electronica, in the vein of Soft Cell, Basement Jaxx, Goldfrapp, and Lords of Acid. They describe it as “cosmopolitan electronica for the whole world.”

Their songs often deal with sexuality with a matter-of-fact explicitness. You can find out more about Sophie and Armand in our Cherry Bikini interview.

Erik Wøllo is a guitarist, synthesist and composer originally from Hemsedal, Norway. He has composed and performed music for films, theatre, ballets and exhibitions, as well as composing for strings, woodwinds and larger orchestras.

He’s released 11 CDs of music with influences ranging from ambient electronica to rock and jazz. His latest release, Elevations, is on the Spotted Peccary label.

Today, we’ve got the motherload of chiptunes, the SID 6581/8580 Recordings Archive. The site has a name that only an electronic music geek would love, but the name captures the spirit of the site and what it does, archive a ton of 8-bit music from classic gaming systems.

If you’re into the classic synth music of Tangerine Dream, you may want to dig into the Tangerine Tree project.

The project is a collaborative effort by fans to remaster and distribute live TD music. They find the best bootlegs and apply modern remastering technologies to get the best sound quality possible. According to the group, they “operate under the tacit approval of Tangerine Dream and TDI music under the conditions that it is expressly not for profit.”

Festival Hall, Adelaide, Australia 3.25.1975, below, features TD’s classic lineup. The recording is noisy, but it captures the spririt of some of their greatest early recordings.

Today we’re highlighting YMO’s Ryuichi Sakamoto and his Stop Rokkasho project.

The Rokkasho-mura reprocessing plant in Japan’s Aomori Prefecture opened for testing on March 31st, 2006. Less than two weeks later, radioactive water containing plutonium and uranium spilled inside the plant.

In response to the opening of the Rokkasho nuclear reprocessing plant and the associated dangers that go along with the plant’s operation, on May 16th, electronic musician Ryuichi Sakamoto launched an international campaign to raise awareness of the risks of nuclear energy and to raise awareness of renewable alternatives.

Sakamoto has created free tracks for the site and solicited new tracks, remixes and music videos from other electronic musicians, including DJ Krush (preview his track below), Ton, Ryddan, Atom and Thomas Dolby (preview below).

Best of all, the music is Creative Commons licensed, so you can download, share and remix it. There are dozens of free downloads at the site.

Today we’re highlighting Atomic Cat, French techno/trance group. Atomic Cat has released a free CD of trance music, A Call From Hope.

All month, we’re going to help you kick the RIAA habit by highlighting great electronic music that’s available for free on the Internet.

Jeff Harrington is a classically-trained composer, a programmer and an advocate of music technology.

He has dozens of musical works, ranging from piano pieces to complete electronic works, available for free download from his site. For many pieces, he also provides the scores as Adobe Acrobat downloads.

Harrington describes his music as “tonal and intensely contrapuntal, inspired by New Orleans and classical music traditions.”

Espace, Harrington’s 2nd completely electronic album, is a collection of slow, sometimes brooding works, employing granular resynthesis and time warping of timbres. The music should appeal to fans of ambient music, space music and classical music alike.

The track High Noon, below, uses “a physically modelled shakuhachi in deep resonant space to explore virtuosic gestures.”
