Free Vocoder For Mac & PC

TAL-Vocoder is a vintage vocoder emulation with 11 bands that emulates the sound of vocoders from the early 80’s.

Here’s a demo of Tal-Vocoder in action:

It includes analog modeled components in combination with digital algorithms such as the SFFT (Short-Time Fast Fourier Transform).

This vocoder does not make a direct convolution of the carrier and modulation signal as other digital vocoders maybe do. It includes an envelope follower for every of the eleven bands.

This vocoder is optimized for voice processing and includes some algorithms for consonants to make the voice more intelligible.

The carrier signal is a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) with a Pulse, Saw, Noise and SubOsc. But it’s also possible to use the left stereo input as carrier. This way every sound source can be used as carrier signal. This plug-in supports every sample rate.

Free Subtractive Synthesizer

Robin Schmidt’s Music Engineering Tools has released a public beta version a new free synth VST for Windows, Straightline.

Description:

Straightliner is a straight-lined subtractive synthesizer in a modern guise. You will find the well known building blocks of classic analog synthesizers (4 oscillators, a filter, 2 envelope generators) patched together in the traditional way.

Now you are probably tempted to say ’boring!’ – however, the building blocks themselves offer much more flexibility than commonly seen in subtractive (aka ’virtual analog’) synthesizers: Instead of relying on a set of fixed waveforms, Straightliner’s oscillators support loading of arbitrary (single cycle) audio files which may be even stereo.

In turn, the whole signal path is laid out in stereo. The standard ADSR model for envelopes is replaced by a flexible modulation generator which allows to define an arbitrary number of breakpoints. The heart of subtractive synthesizers is the filter, of course. In this department, Straightliner offers a multimode filter with various modes, among them the usual suspects like lowpass, highpass, bandpass, but also bell- and shelving types and some ’morphable’ types and (remark: at this early beta-stage, only the ’Moogish Lowpass’ type is implemented).

Speed Up Your Work In Ableton Live

Tonearm has announced the release of Vitamin L, a free system of over 100 shortcuts and tools developed for speeding up the workflow in Ableton Live.

It combines accelerated access to most frequently performed tasks with many functionality enhancements.

Features:

  • Context-sensitive mouse wheel assignment.
  • Easy keyboard access to many clip properties and envelopes.
  • Quick modes for adjusting clip gain, pitch and BPM from the timeline/session.
  • Keyboard timeline navigation, play-from-mouse-cursor, etc.
  • A quick and simple solution to recording and combining multiple takes.
  • Power-zoom: mouse-wheel zoom, accelerated zoom, vertical zoom, zoom presets.
  • Precision editing (nudge, move/copy to an adjacent track and more).
  • Automation tools, including working with lanes and editing the tempo envelope.
  • Sample-audio-to-midi-track function and shortcut.

Available for Windows XP (with potential Vista support in later versions), Vitamin L is free and is delivered as a small executable (.exe) that runs concurrently with Ableton Live to facilitate keyboard/mouse access to a variety of functions.

As there’s not Mac version, I haven’t had a chance to try this out. If you have, let me know what you think!
