Developer – ‘With CoreMIDI, Your Music Apps Are No Longer Just Toys’

YouTube Preview Image

Synthetic Bits shared this video today, which demonstrates using iOS devices in a fairly elaborate multi-platform MIDI performance.

The video demonstrates the CoreMIDI capabilities of two iOS music apps, FunkBox and Little MIDI Machine, when connected to an iRig MIDI interface.

Other instruments used are a Korg Monotribe, Little Phatty, Tattoo drum plugin, Arctic Keys synth app, NLog synth plugin, and Ableton Live.

The performance is a real-world demonstration of the current state of iOS as a music platform, and reflects the work developers have done as part of the Open Music App Collaboration initiative.

While I’d disagree with the generalization that music apps that don’t support MIDI are ‘just toys’, the focus that iOS developers have placed on improving MIDI communication between apps has opened up a lot of options for musicians.

Check out the video and let us know what you think about the state of iOS as a music platform!

FunkBox 2.1 Adds The MIDI Sync Funk

Funkbox iPad CoreMIDI

iPad Music Software: Synthetic Bits announced today that they’ve updated FunkBox (App Store link) – their $2.99 virtual drum machine for iOS – to version 2.1.:

FunkBox v2.1 was approved blazingly fast today by Apple! If you are using FunkBox with CoreMIDI, or running it on an iPhone 3G with iOS4, or do a lot of drum box custom sample editing, you will definitely want to update as soon as possible.

If you have an iOS device that can do multi-tasking, you may also want to pick up the BassLine and MoDrum apps to play with the new multi-tasking audio features that allow you to run FunkBox simultaneously with other music apps. Thank you to Finger apps for leading the way with these extremely cool CoreMIDI features that we think are going to change music making on iOS dramatically for the better!

For iOS musicians, the FunkBox update is one more small step towards iOS MIDI nirvana. Details below.  Continue reading

FunkBox iPad App MIDI Synced with An x0xb0x

YouTube Preview Image

This video demo doesn’t look like much – but it’s the first time we’ve seen an iPad app MIDI synced to other MIDI hardware

via syntheticbits:

This is a demo showing our FunkBox drum machine iPad app synced up with an x0xb0x synth, using CoreMIDI and an iPad camera connection kit with an m-audio uno MIDI interface.

This will be included as a bonus feature in the next FunkBox 2.0 update which is coming soon!

If you’re an iPad musician, the addition of MIDI sync could be a big deal.

It means that you can buy an app, for the price of a cup of coffee, that turns your iPad into a multi-touch hardware drum machine.

As more developers support CoreMIDI, iPads are likely to be attractive alternatives to some dedicated MIDI modules.

How big of a deal is MIDI sync for iOS? Let us know what you think!
