This video looks at glitch sound design using Ableton Live.

via oubliettezombie:

In this video I outline a simple, iterative process for creating lots of tiny glitch sounds using just about any audio source material.

The devices used are the Redux, Reverb, Frequency Shifter, Simple Delay, Gate, and Grain Delay. Additionally, I cover creative resampling of your glitches for later slicing and rearranging via the Random MIDI device.

Enjoy!

The Quintrigger, by Mr.Ugly, is an interesting suitcase style, steampunk-esque noise machine:

It’s a quintoscillator feeding into a Hex-Schmitt Trigger that I fed back into itself. The first of many projects where I design something from scratch then circuit bend the shit out of it. The quintoscillator triggers the Schmitt Trigger, then the Schmitt Trigger feeds back into itself via all of those lovely switches! Each switch has 3 positions of modulation, so the number of drone combinations is amazing! And there’s 4 separate outputs. I think that if each output was run through effects into a mixer, you could create some pretty intense walls of symphatic drone. And it all runs off a 9V adapter.

Have fun getting this through TSA inspections!

Glitch Sequencer is a free cellular automaton based MIDI sequencer for the PC and Mac.

It offers an interesting style of composition based on evolving patterns and is great for fast, fluid experimentation.

Glitch Sequencer was written by Bret Truchan in Processing using themidibus MIDI library.

See the video above for an overview of Glitch Sequencer. More videos and documentation are available at the Glitch Sequencer site.

The MLGI is a multi-laser gestural controller built and designed by Meason Wiley at California Institute of the Arts.

The controller uses Dan Overholt’s CUI interface along with an array of photocells and laser modules to send out control data, which can be converted to OSC or MIDI using various programming platforms such as ChucK and Processing.

This video demonstrates the MLGI working with ChucK, which is sending OSC to a custom built live instrument created using Native Instruments Reaktor Software. The controller is still in it’s development stages, but will be featured at the NIME conference at Carnegie Melon in June.

This Replicant screencast by Chris Randall demos the latest sound mangling software from Audio Damage.

Here’s the Replicant description:

Replicant is a delay-based effect in the “beat slicer/looper” vein, with some tricks of its own that separate it from the herd. From a simple delay or panning effect, on up to massive random beat mangling, Replicant is a capable plugin well in line with today’s modern electronic music styles. Stuttering buffers and filter drops are easy to program, and the comprehensive randomization features give it a mind of its own, if so desired. If you’re looking to add some chance to your programming, you’ve come to the right place.

Replicant is available as a VST effect for Windows, and as an AudioUnit/VST effect bundle for OSX Universal Binary. Note that you must have OSX 10.3.9 or greater to use the Macintosh version of this plugin.

Features:

Tempo-based delay and looping effects, from 1/128th note to an entire measure.

Six independant randomization controls, for subtle changes or extreme aleatoric madness, including a global randomize button.

Unique “Hold” feature, to store a random sequence you like.

Resonant low-pass and high-pass filters that change over time.

Pan position that changes over time.

Two separate direction modes, for entire events or individual repeats, with randomization.

Full MIDI Learn for hardware control of every parameter. (VST only; handled by host in AU version).

Audio demos are available at the site.

Glitch is a genre of electronic music derived from a fascination with the sound of technology failing in interesting ways. While the music originated with musicians exploring things like CDs skipping, the sound of glitch has been absorbed into all types of electronic music, with musicians using glitch noises and effects within a rhythmic framework.

Here are seven ways you can get your glitch on for free:

Illformed’s Glitch is a free Windows VST plug-in effect for Windows-based systems running a VST 2.3 compatible host. Glitch chops up your audio in real-time and applies a variety of effects which can either be chosen at random, manually sequenced, or a mixture of both. The sounds it generates range from quite subtle to extremely bizarre, depending on how much you tweak the controls.

Supatrigga is a free AU plugin from Smartelectronix. When synchronised to tempo, this plugin will take the incoming audio and re-arrange it in a musically sensible way. Think of it as a realtime ReCyCle with fun options.

Destroy FX is a collection of free VST & Audio Unit plugins designed to destroy your music in creative ways. Plugins include Buffer Overide (below), Scrubby & Geometer.

Atypical Audio offers a free collection of Glitch Apple Loops as a teaser for its package Glitch Gumbo.

The emphasis of this download pack is on experimental breaks and beats, while retaining a good dose of funk and groove.

MDSP’s LiveCut is a monster of a plugin, giving you control over all sorts of parameters for glitching up your audio:

GleetchPlug is a peculiar collection of instruments that you can patch togheter with a modular matrix. The suite features four stereo loopable wave readers/writers with different random loop point algorithms, one wavetable oscillator, a sonic reducer, 3/4/5 bands parametric EQ, an amazing sonic disgregator, a granular re-synthesis engine, a ring modulator, a 5 stereo tracks mixer, and more.

Altered Realities is a new album electroacoustic guitar music by Turkish composer Erdem Helvacioglu. On the CD, Helvacioglu makes very interesting use of electronics, recording all the compositions in real time directly to tape. No overdubs or post-processing was used on the material, so the CD captures ideal live electroacoustic performances.

The music is a collection of solo acoustic guitar, enhanced with effects and computer processing. Helvacioglu plays an Ovation Legend, using a TC Electronic Fireworx multi effects processor, Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller and Audiomulch, a Windows-based audio processor optimized for experimental performance work.

The sound of Altered Realities is an intriguing blend of abstronica and sparse guitar work. While the compositions are solidly grounded in the world of electroacoustic performance, there’s an emphasis and focus on Helvacioglu’s guitar, which gives the pieces an accessible sound and a sense of intimacy.

Helvacioglu processes the guitar in a wide variety of ways. At times, guitar notes are accompanied by an effected doppelganger, soundling like a ghostly mirror of the original. This expands Helvacioglu’s playing in many interesting ways, sometimes sounding like a delay effect, other times sounding like an alternate-world version of the acoustic performance. The double often moves the peformance into new territory, adding a mysterious echo or a glitchy accompaniment.

At other times, Helvacioglu’s processing creates a sort of background accompaniment. Guitar notes that would normally quickly die away are translated into pulsing background effects, or washes of reverberated sound.

At other times, the processing work takes the performace in multiple directions at once. Acoustic guitar may be mirrored by a sitar-like sound, while glitchy effects percolate in the background, and the guitar notes are also being translated into synth pad-like effects.

Though the guitar processing zings off on many tangents, the music is consistently grounded by the acoustic performance. There’s also a definite sense of cause and effect between Helvacioglu’s guitar playing and the effects and computer-generated accompaniment.

The combination of guitar, and the sense of immediacy it brings, with the more abstract sounds of Helvacioglu’s computer processing is quite effective. Throughout the recording, Altered Realities feels like a guitar performance in a mysterious or magical space.

While Helvacioglu’s technical approach is very different, his music brings to mind Harold Budd’s ambient piano work with Brian Eno and the work of Steve Tibbetts. Like Budd and Tibbetts, Helvacioglu’s music captures a sense of wonder, like he’s exploring what happens in a artificial acoustic space, reacting to what he hears and discovering new textures and sounds and their emotional effect.

Altered Realities is one of the most interesting experimental records we’ve heard this year. While it’s very experimental, it’s also relatively accessible. And, while it frequently has an ambient feel about it, it rewards focused listening because of the ingenuity of the processing and the way Helvacioglu plays against the processed sound.
