Overview:
The Oxford Synthesiser Company (OSC) OSCar is a vintage mono-synthesizer, first released in 1983.
It features two digitally controlled oscillators and twin 12dB filters, which can be configured as lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters. It also featured some early digital capabilities, like patch memory and a basic sequencer.
An unusual feature of the Oscar was it’s additive synthesis capabilities. New waveforms could be created by changing the amplitudes of up to 24 harmonics, achieved by inputting values on the actual keyboard. This considerably widened the Oscar’s sound palette.
According to EM’s Julian Colbeck, “The Oscar’s strength is its ability to deliver idiosyncratic lead, bass, and obbligato sounds with tremendous power and flexibility. You can create custom waveshapes, set up and externally clock sequences and arpeggio patterns, and store your tweaks into its programmable memory. Although the Oscar is lumped in with the Minimoog and friends as one of the great classic analogs, only its filters are truly analog; everything else about the Oscar is digital.”
The OSCar was $1,000 new; now they sell for $2,000 and up.

- GMedia Music makes a virtual version of the OSCar, the impOSCar

GForce has announced the release of a Universal Binary version of impOSCar.
The quirky soft synth is modelled on the popular British OSCar synth that was used by the likes of Ultravox, Jean-Michel Jarre, Orbital, Underworld and Stevie Wonder.
The UB update is now available and is free to users who purchased and registered their instrument after the 1st October 2006. For these users the instrument has automatically been allocated to their accounts at the GForce website.
If you purchased your impOSCar before 1st October 2006, you will need to update to the Universal ImpOSCar via the shop for £13.99 (plus VAT), €19.99 (plus VAT) or $26.00.
GMEDIA has announced the the GForce Future Retro Pack collection of GForce virtual instruments. GMedia is calling this a “limited-edition collection” that is only available for a short time.
The GForce Future Retro Pack combines all of GMEDIA’s emulations of vintage keyboards in one affordable package. These software instruments – Minimonsta:Melohman, The Oddity, impOSCar and M-Tron – bring back the sounds that defined an era–the Minimoog, ARP Odyssey, Oxford OSCAR and Mellotron, respectively.

These emulations have the advantage of modern features like memory, additional modulation and new performance modes the original designers never dreamed of. They can be used alone or with most popular host software. Compatibility includes VST 2.0 (Mac/PC including VSTi), RTAS (Mac/PC) and Audio Units (Mac).
