Totally Wired, a documentary film about Andreas Schneider’s infamous ‘Schneider’s Buero’, the boutique electronic musical instrument shop in Berlin, is now available on DVD.

Description:

Inside a crumbling socialist office block in former East Berlin, synthesiser store owner Andreas Schneider preaches the way of analogue to a loyal following of infamous electronic musicians, who flock to his store, ‘Schneiders Buero’, for unique boutique instruments. His business has prospered against the odds throughout the digital revolution in music, and in parallel, through a period of huge change in East Berlin. His is a haven for maverick instrument builders and passionate collectors alike. But as the twin forces of capitalism and digital technology seep through the last bricks of the Wall, how much longer can this analogue asylum survive?

The film features an informed selection of inventors and artists alike, including Dieter Doepfer, Junior Boys, Cassy, Ken MacBeth, Anthony Rother, Jessica Rylan, Daniel Miller, Wowa Cwejman, Per Salzwedel, Ricardo Villalobos, Magda, Marc Houle, Max Loderbauer and many more.

You can preview a section of the DVD below that features Ken Macbeth, of Macbeth Studio Systems. Macbeth talks about what inspires him, his vision for the M5 synthesiser, and making noise.

Ken MacBeth has announced a new semi-modular analog synthesizer, the MacBeth M5X:

The M5X is due for launch some 8 – 10 weeks from now. I’m awaiting parts being manufactured and coming into the UK.

The M5 and M5N have proved to be popular- and I have had many enquiries over the past while requesting information on how to get a unit.

The M5N is now discontinued, but a new version with some different features is now on the horizon. Since I have been developing the circuits for the X-Factor synth- which has spawned some modular development- I have decided to vamp up the M5N taking it, too, to a different level.

All circuits within are being redesigned to the X-Series level that have been talked about elsewhere on this forum. For me, it’s an exciting challenge and I can’t wait for the result.

There are still a crew out there who want the semi-modular approach, normalised jack sockets and all…so keep looking. I hope to conclude a design for the 3U guys too…

No specs are up, yet, on the MacBeth site.

Macbeth Studio Systems has announced a new line of large-format synth modules, the Macbeth X-Series Modular Synthesizer, that promises to bring sexy back to monster synths.

I’m a fan of large-format modular synths, but development in small-format modulars has been more active in recent years.

Ken Macbeth’s doing his part to change that, though, with the X-Series Modular Synthesizer:

Introducing the MacBeth X-Series Modular Synthesizer! This is the start of an on going
open plan system aimed at discerning and creative musicians. The 5U format is
an established one and has been around since the sixties. More and more- electronic
music artists are seeking to expand the palette of their synthesizer tools into modular
analogue synthesizers.

The images throughout this article are mock ups or you could call them artists impressions.
The next time this website is updated- you will be seeing the real thing.

The sound samples that I have put up here are from the prototype circuits that are now
identical to the production model pcbs.

I plan to produce a rack frame that will fit into 19″ 10 or 12U rack casing- I’d like to
house the first system in a portable 12U SKB pop-up rack case!

Prices for this equipment will appear on this website very shortly- so keep looking!

Macbeth has information up on two modules – the X-Series Dual Oscillator Module and X-Series ‘Backend’ Filter Modules. They’re big modules that, together, will make a complete synth.

Complex modules make sense in a large-format system, where so much of the cost is just the faceplate and knobs.

Take a look at Macbeth’s new synth modules, start saving your money – and leave a comment with your thoughts!
