Since we’re approaching the holiday season, I figured I’d get in the “giving” frame of mind by rounding up every single loop I’ve ever posted on this site and zip them up into one file for an easy and free download. So here you go, everything from country to zeibekiko, 60 to 300 BPM, WAV to AIFF to REX2, it’s all inside this one zip file.

These are professionally recorded loops and licensed with a Creative Commons License.

We do our best to avoid “cute kitty with music gear” photos at Synthtopia. You can only get so excited about another shot of somebody’s cat peaking out of their Buchla modular synth or sleeping on their Korg OASYS.

Jaded as we may be, though, this is the cutest kitty DJ in the world.

We’ll try to redeem this post by linking to the source of this photo, the blog of Ryan Gruss – a drummer who says that “the world has been overrun by shitty producers with their 808 samples and re-mixed Ableton Live schlock.”

Gruss is drummer on a mission to put more groove in your mix, and he’s doing it by blogging a free professionally recorded drum loop every day. He includes MP3 previews, but also multitracked Logic sessions and mixed down WAV, AIFF and REX2 files.

They’re Creative Commons licensed, so you can slap it up, flip it and rub it down as long as you give Gruss credit.

Special Secret Groove Sauce: Gruss’s RSS feed has MP3 enclosures – which means it’s a podcast and you can subscribe to it with iTunes and get the free loops delivered to your ears automatically.

By the time you get to Ghetto Grooves 3, though, you’re moving into porn movie title territory. You gotta figure that the sound developer has put things on autopilot.

Ghetto Grooves 3 sounds like something that you’re going to find in the back room at Guitar Center….through the 18 and over door.

Sunday Synth Jam: Traffica Voca Electronica comes via JeffreyPlaide:

This track is a very unusual composition in that there are very few musical elements in the assemblage. Small samples of sound are spliced together to form various loops. Ethereal sinewaves connect various noises to the vocoded spoken word passages.

The spoken word segment is actually the voice of Peter Zinovieff, whom with his EMS synthesizer company in Britain in the early 1970s produced the classic VCS3 range and Synthi 100 voltage controlled synthesizers. He is actually speaking about the advantages of making sequenced electronic music rather than by cutting up magnetic tape of recorded sounds

Today, it is much easier for the experimental musician to create music with computer software and editing techniques than it was in the late 1960s when Peter was experimenting. This sound collage represents a kind of special tribute to Peter Zinovieff and EMS, albeit in a very unusual arrangement of un-related samples and sinewave tones, culminating to the vocoded spoken word conclusion.

Yedey has released LoopDrive, a freeware loop slicer and rearranger for Windows.

Description:

Loopdrive is a Loop slicer and rearranger with some weird FX. Load in a drum loop wave, set the tempo, and LoopDrive slices it into beats.

Now you can use the build-in sequencer grid to rearrange the beats. There is also a “reverse sequencer” which enables you to play selected beats backwards.

After rearranging the loop you can apply a filter, bit crusher, distortion, overdrive and even a grain FX. There’s also the possibility to set the FX order, which gives you more control over the FX.

The pack contains 60 chords/stabs and loops between ~110 and ~130 bpm. Most can roughly be classified as minimal, detroit, dubtechno orientated material. You’re invited to cut/slice/mash/torture/mix/whatever and use them for your own tracks.

This minimal 20-minute video by Nate Harrison looks at the history of the “Amen Break,” arguably the most important sample in history. Along the way, it touches on the art of sampling and genres from jungle to f’d-up beats.

The six-second drum sample came from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. The sample went on to be used extensively in early hip-hop and music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music.
