We’re really excited about the release of our brand new Cocoa/iPhone development kit, built by Ullrich and Gernot! This means you can really easily integrate SoundCloud in any Cocoa-based (iPhone 2.0+, Mac OS X 10.5+) application, complete with oAuth-based authentication, asynchronous requests and uploads with a progressbar. We have only begun to imagine what kind of cool audio sharing apps could be built using this little toolbox…

So if you’re an iPhone-hacker, don’t hesitate to download the source and start hacking!

We’ve also taken the opportunity to upgrade pretty much all of our API pages. We’ve moved all code and documentation over to Github, so it’s easier than ever to browse and fork it. Since long time there’s already a complete Python wrapper for our API, and now it’s been better documented as well.

This could lead to some interesting new iPhone apps!

Apple has an interesting profile on DJ Paul Van Dyk. It looks at how he’s working now, and also provides a current look at the gear he uses:

“I’ve developed the same passion I have for making music as I have for DJing over the last 15 years,” he says. “It’s the ultimate thing to be able to combine both. I can use my production skills as well as my skills as a DJ together to create new things live. The whole experience of me playing music is much more intense because it fits the atmosphere of the moment, of the set, of the venue, and of the crowd.”
Paul Van Dyk’s Studio Gear

When he’s not on the road, van Dyk turns out tracks at his Berlin studio. The electronic music laboratory is packed with old analog gear and the latest Macs running Logic Studio.

Hardware

MacBook Pro

Mac Pro (in the studio)

Logic Studio

Ableton Live

Spectrasonics

Outboard Gear

Euphonix EuCon Console

Allen & Heath 3D Mixer

Evolution UC33e USB MIDI Controller

Akai MIDI controllers

Vintage Outboard Gear:

Roland Juno 60

Roland Juno 106

Roland TR-808

Roland TR-909

Roland TB-303

“My music production starts in Logic,” he says. “I usually nail down a speed, then get a nice drum loop going for some rhythm. Then I lay down chords or a bass line or some piano—some stuff like that. When I feel the musical idea I have is coming across, and I can feel it, I get to properly blowing it up and doing drum programming and better bass line sequences.”

Van Dyk grabs sounds from the Logic Studio library and records riffs from his old gear. “Most of the stuff is not samples,” he says. “It’s all tweaked synthesizer. In Logic I use the ES1, ES2, EVP88 and the like.”

“It provides the perfect surrounding for searching for the right sound,” says van Dyk. “It’s great how you can dive into the synthesizers, grab those different sort of resonances and look through the library to find exactly what you need. And once you’ve found what you’re looking for, there are a lot of possibilities to produce a unique song. You can use filters—put a gate on it or use the envelope or compression to make it crisp and shine through whatever else is going on.”

Paul Van Dyk’s Touring Rig

On tour for his latest album, In Between, Van Dyk uses two 17-inch MacBook Pros running Logic Studio and Ableton Live.

“One computer is for the audio library, the other computer is where the software synthesizers are for sequencing,” he says. “The computers are connected through an interface and an Allen & Heath 3D mixer, which is also a MIDI controller. I have 19 software synths installed and I have two MIDI keyboards, so I play a lot of things live. I also have a UC-33 controller, an Akai controller and some other things that I can play with when I’m up there. With all these things I’m able to do some crazy stuff.”

Van Dyk essentially creates remixes of his tracks live, tweaking them to suit the vibe. “I could play your favorite tune and it sounds completely different—different bass line, different drums,” he says, “but it would sound so much better at that particular moment of the set.”

New remixes are often born out of that spontaneous intensity. “Some of the remixes I’ve done in the last few years are basically the outcome of me playing a certain track live,” he says. “Then I just redid exactly what I did live in the studio and it was a remix. The live performance is influencing the production work and vice versa. When you go to the studio to do a remix you think about it a lot. When you create it in front of people, it’s part of the set, an element of the journey. You don’t really think so much about it, you’re just influenced by the vibe. You may do things that you never come up with [in the studio] because you’re in the flow. It’s very inspiring.”

It’s a far cry from the days of vinyl. “I’m so busy when I play now,” says van Dyk. “The other day I was wondering, what did I actually do once the record was playing? Wait for eight minutes to mix in the next one? How boring.”

Deckadance, the dj software with what some think is the most offensive gear ad ever, is coming to the Mac.

“Many professional DJs, producers and remixers use Macs as a preference platform, so the release of version 1.2 will make Deckadance a real proposition for them” commented Luis Serrano, the developer of Deckadance.

Here are highlights of version 1.2:

Open controller & timecode support: The Digital Vinyl System control panel has been redesigned and now comes with new and improved features, including an easy-to-use interface, a real-time signal spectroscope, and of course, the ‘learning’ feature that enables almost any timecode source (CD or Vinyl) to be used. There is also Vinyl timecoded control of decks inside Ableton Live and Live LE.

Improved Windows soundcard driver compatibility: Deckadance now supports DirectSound drivers in win32 platforms in addition to ASIO4ALL.

Native support: Deckadance 1.2 includes native support of the following controllers: Hercules Dj Console, Kontrol Dj KDJ500, EKS XP10, Behringer BCD2000/3000, M-Audio X-Session Pro, Allen&Heath Xone:3D, Vestax VCI-100 and Numark Total Control.

Editions: Deckadance 1.2 is available in two retail editions, Deckadance Club Edition (full) and Deckadance House Edition that drops the timecoded vinyl/CD transport control features. For hardware manufacturers that would like to bundle Deckadance with their DJ products there is a special LE Edition (contact Image Line Software for more details).

Download Deckadance 1.2 from http://demo.deckadance.com.

Price: Deckadance Club Edition is US $179 and House Edition US $99. Both versions can be ordered from the FL Studio Web shop http://shop.flstudio.com/.

A new web site promises to turn your genetic sequence into a musical sequence.Rie Takahashi and Jeffrey Miller of the University of California at Los Angeles describe the system in the open-access journal Genome Biology. They set up a system is to translate amino acids – the building blocks for human protein sequences – into musical chords.

Takahashi, an musician as well as a microbiologist, worked with Miller to come up with an artful way to represent the standard 20 amino acids with the standard 13-note scale.

“The challenge was to find a way to be completely faithful to the science … but also make the music more dimensional and add rhythm,” said.
With the aid of a colleague at UCLA, Frank Pettit, the researchers devised a Web-based program that can take the three-base code for each amino acid in a sequence, triplet by triplet, and turn it into a playable MIDI file.

Miller said the resulting music is completely determined by the protein sequence rather than tunefulness. “There are no fudge factors at all,” he said.

“This year at Macworld, we can do what we enjoy most as musicians: go beyond the technology and really talk about making music,” says Kirn. “We’ve got a group of unique artists who represent some of the endless diversity of musicians on the Mac. I’m excited to be part of the best Macworld yet for music lovers.”

The day-long symposium, from 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, will feature discussions, mini performances, live demos, questions and answers, and tips and advice for beginners and gurus alike. Five speakers have been confirmed, with some additional “surprise guests” anticipated. The Music Technology symposium is one event in a week packed with events for musicians, including live performances and demos onstage on the show floor and workshops from leading Mac experts.

Macintosh OS X has joined Windows and other Unix systems in a inauspicious top 20 list – the SANS TOP 20 Vulnerabilities. OS X was added not because of any particular hack or vulnerability, but because “MacOS includes software that has critical vulnerabilities and Apple has a patch policy, described below, that do not allow us to be more specific in identifying the elements of MacOS that contain the critical vulnerabilities.”

SANS Details:

Description

The Mac OS X was released by Apple in 2001 as a solid UNIX-based Operating System. Although Mac OS X has security features implemented out of the box such as built-in personal firewall, un-necessary services turned off by default and easy ways to increase the OS security, the user still faces many vulnerabilities.

Mac OS X also includes the Safari web browser. Multiple vulnerabilities have been found in this browser and in certain cases exploit code has also been posted publicly.

Apple frequently issues Mac OS X cumulative security updates that tend to include fixes for a large number of vulnerabilities with risk ratings ranging from critical to low. This complicates the tracking of vulnerabilities for this OS, and the best way to ensure security is to apply the latest cumulative patch.

How to determine If You Are Vulnerable

Any default or unpatched Mac OS X installations should be presumed to be vulnerable.

The following procedure will check if there are new packages available. If you do not see any important packages patches available, you may be safe:

Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

Choose Software Update from the View menu.

Click Update Now.

Check the items available

To aid in the process of vulnerability assessment, you can leverage any vulnerability scanner.

How to Protect against Mac OS X Vulnerabilities

Be sure to stay current and have all security updates for Apple products applied by turning on the Software Update System to automatically check for software updates released by Apple. Although different schedules are possible, we recommend that you configure it to check for updates on a weekly basis at least. For more information about how to check and run the Software Update System, see the Apple Software Updates webpage – http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/softwareupdates.html

To avoid unauthorized access to your machine, turn on the built-in personal firewall. If you have authorized services running in your machine that need external access, be sure to explicitly permit them.

There are many excellent guides available for hardening Mac OS X. The CIS Benchmark for Mac OS X enumerates security configurations useful for hardening the Operating System. The actions suggested by the Level-1 benchmarks documents are unlikely to cause any interruption of service or applications and are highly recommended to be applied on the system. Also, the Securing Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger white paper examines security features and hardening of Mac OS X.

Apple’s latest version of iLife includes a new piece of software, GarageBand, that turns your Mac into an easy-to-use recording studio, capable of making top-quality music.

iLife, Apple’s set of media applications, includes several great applications that bring multimedia power to Mac users. iTunes is considered by many to be the best digital music player. iPhoto lets you organize digital images, and makes cropping and editing them a no-brainer. iMovie does the same for movies, while iDVD lets ordinary users create very professional DVDs.

iLife GarageBand

With iLife ‘04, Apple is adding a new application, GarageBand. GarageBand is an studio-quality sequencer designed for novices. It’s simple enough that anybody should be able to play around with it and make music that at least sounds polished. GarageBand uses a drag-and-drop interface that makes loop manipulation easy.

The application comes with over one thousand professionally-recorded loops. To get started with the application, you can drag audio loops into the timeline. The application has a very visual interface that makes it very clear what each track represents. For example, each track shows up with a icon that represents the sound of the instrument (see screen capture).

GarageBand isn’t just a loop tool, though. It also includes very good software instruments, including piano, organ, bass, guitars, sax, and drums, and a wide range of synthesizers. GarageBand makes it easy to record music, too, because the software knows what system hardware you have on your machine and adapts to it automatically. This lets you plug in a mic and go.

GarageBand isn’t a replacement for a full-fledged audio/midi sequencer. However, it raises the bar for entry-level software to an amazing standard. Apple is throwing into iLife an audio sequencer that would have been state-of-the art a few years ago.

One of the greatest things about GarageBand is the way Apple integrates it with other Apple apps. You can make some new background music, and then add it to your iPhoto slide shows, burn it to a CD, or use it as a score for an iMovie and burn it to a DVD. You could grumble that GarageBand doesn’t have some features that pros have come to expect, but it is a minor miracle that Apple has made a music studio that mere mortals can use. This may turn out to be one of Apple’s hottest innovations yet.

GarageBand turns your Mac into an anytime, anywhere recording studio packed with hundreds of instruments and a recording engineer or two for good measure. It’s the easiest way to create, perform and record your own music whether you’re an accomplished player or just wish you were a rock star. And GarageBand is the newest member of the iLife family, so you can add your original music to your slideshows, your DVD menus, burn it to CDs or score your iMovie projects.

Using GarageBand

You’ll need an Apple laptop, because iLife is a Mac-only application.

Most users will start with loops. Apple Loops are the building blocks of GarageBand tunes. GarageBand organizes loops by instrument, style and genre. This makes it easy to find one loop out of thousands of them. You can even browse by style.

Once a loop has been imported, it can be drag-and-dropped and extended to any length needed. When the various loops are in place, you can mix and balance each track. The loops that are provided are professional, an cover a broad range of styles.

If you want to record something, just plug a keyboard, mic or guitar into your Mac, and you’re ready to go. GarageBand will recognize what you’ve done, and configure the application to be ready to go. Guitarists will enjoy the built in virtual guitar amps, that let you create a lot of standard amps sounds, including jazz, rock and pop styles. Keyboardist can just plug in a USB keyboard, and then play one of the virtual instruments included with GarageBand.

Once you’ve got a great recording, you can sweeten it with effects. GarageBand includes hundreds of effects presets that are designed to make it easy to get great sounding mixes. The effects include compression, equalization, reverb, echo, and more.

Exporting to iTunes

Once you’ve got something you like, you can Export to iTunes. This makes your track instantly available in iTunes, so you can burn it to CD, put it on your iPod, use it as a soundtrack for a iMovie project.

GarageBand doesn’t break new ground for pro users. Instead, it brings a pro-quality studio into the hands of Mac users for the price of a couple of pizzas.
