Yonac has released a major update to Magellan, its software synthesizer for iOS.
The update includes intelligent preset generation, two new effects, configurable FX signal flow, user-friendly additions to the preset system and more. The update also opens up Magellan as an FX processor you can use with Audiobus.
“Some synthesizers have a random preset feature that haphazardly chooses sound parameters, which mostly produces unusable sounds,” explains chief engineer Jim Yonac. “Instead, we use artificial intelligence to generate unique and usable patches for Magellan.”
Magellan’s new SPAWN feature uses a balance of expert knowledge and well-informed randomization to generate presets in a given category or combination of categories, selecting something in the order of 180 parameters in a mutually compatible manner. SPAWN settings allow the user to choose among or mix bass, lead, pad, or “weird” sounds, with an option to also generate an arp. The “Surprise Me” feature transfers tonality decisions to the system. Fletcher Kaufman of Sunsine Audio let us know about a new release, Explorer 2, a collection of 64 new presets for Magellan.
Explorer 2 includes full XY pad support for all presets, enabling quick variation in sound and texture. The collection contains basses, leads, pads, and arpeggiation sequences.
Here’s a preview of Explorer 2:
Sunsine Audio has released Explorer, a collection of 64 new presets for Magellan.
Here’s what they have to say about Explorer:
“Anyone looking for a bit of insight and exploration into this semi-modular behemoth should be pleased. Following hot-on-the-heels of our factory presets, these presets are of equal quality, and will greatly expand your palette.” says Fletcher Kaufman, owner of Sunsine Audio.
Each preset has the mod wheel and X-Y Pad routed to useful destinations. In addition 21 presets have been “Coupled” and labeled accordingly to be used as dual layer presets utilizing both synth engines. These presets maintain their function and individuality when used un-“Coupled” as well.
This video tutorial, via YonacSoftware, looks at the MIDI Out and virtual MIDI features of Magellan for iPad.
It covers how to use virtual MIDI with other virtual MIDI capable apps (here demo’d with GeoSynth). It also looks at how to control a hardware synth, in this case a Korg microKorg, with Magellan’s MIDI Out feature. You can use Magellan’s arpeggiators, ChordMakers, and sequencer with the MIDI Out.
Magellan is available now in the App Store for US $9.99.
