Britney Spears’ Toxic was a guilty pleasure a few years ago, and when you mash it up with Metallica, it only gets better.

Some might argue, though, that you could add Metallica to just about anything and make it better.

So let me know if Enter Toxman deserves to be the guilty pleasure of 2009 – or if you think Britney just ruined a decent song.

The video, by Gold Greendot,  is a mixed-media stop motion music video and celebration commemorating the election and inauguration of Barack Obama as the forty-fourth president of the United States:

Showcasing Adam Freeland’s remix of Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic” and the imaginative stylings of forward thinking toy artists Dalek, Bill McMullen and Kubrick, to name just a few. Independently animated and directed by the progressive minds of the directing team GOLD, the piece is a labor of love that invites everyone to join in or create their own celebration.

At the end of the year, each segment placed together with the others will form a full length listening experience combining the styles of cut-ups, remixes, mashups and remakes.

The Evolution Control Committee have invented a rear-projected infrared-activated faux-touchscreen mashup controller…hacked from the Nintendo Wiimote.

It’s a bizarre McGyver – but you got to love the giant screen and the “insanely overloaded Ableton Live” running on it.

According to the ECC, the Mashup Controller is ”the secret sauce that makes The ECC’s Wheel Of Mashup live mashup shows possible.”

If you’re not familiar with the ECC, they claim to have been to have been “creating illegal music since 1986, when copyright infringement was done the hard way.”

When they aren’t creating McGyver’d music controllers, they’re coming up with new euphemisms for sex. As if “doing the mashup” wasn’t good enough.

In RiP: A Remix Nanifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

RiP : A remix manifesto is an open source documentary about copyright and culture.

The film’s central protagonist is mashup artist Girl Talk. Also along for the ride are Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow.

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. 

Best quote: “Corporations are completely taking over our culture and telling us that we can only consume it – and we’re saying ‘No!”, we’re saying we want to actually create with it, respond to it, take it, mutilate it, cut it up!”

Don’t worry, it’s only mildly disturbing….

Soulwax kicks of the CD with a cover of Daft Punk’s Teachers. In the original version, DP name checks artists that they presumably like or that have influenced them, ranging from George Clinton and Bryan Wilson to Dr. Dre and Van Helden. Soulwax’s take on Teachers trades Daft Punks electro beat for more of an electro-glam sound, and trades DP’s list of mostly dance artists with rockers, from Thin Lizzy to Monster Magnet.

The rest of Nite Versions builds on these inspirations. The beats throughout have a glam-disco-electro feel. Tortured guitars and rock bass are joined by vintage synth sounds and sample effects, giving the CD a dance-friendly retro rock sound.

If you’re familiar with Soulwax’s CD Any Minute Now, you’ll recognize bits and pieces from it on Nite Versions. But Soulwax takes the originals and extends them into 12″ mixes or treats them like mashups, so that many of the tracks are barely recognizable.

Highlights of the CD include Miserable Girl, which mixes glam rock with twisted sample-bass and I Love Techno, which combines 8-bits with dance-rock beats.

The CD is a continuous mix, but sounds complete different than most mix CDs you are likely to hear this year. On Nite Versions, Soulwax doesn’t just remix their tracks for the dance floor, but reimagines them.
