Moog at NAMM

28Jan06

The spirit of Dr. Robert Moog, father of the modern synthesizer, was all over NAMM. There were analog synthesizers galore, and the world of modular synths seemed to be healthier than ever.

Nowhere was his presence felt, though, more than the Moog Music booth. Moog Music had a special poster set up for Nammsters to sign with their reflections about Dr. Moog. And the company introduced two new products based upon some of the last designs Moog worked on.

moog bass murf

The first of these is the Bass Murf. It is a new Moogerfooger designed specifically for bassists. The new Bass MuRF(MF-105B) apparently was created after a keyboardist told the company that the MuRF worked great on synth bass, but that the range of the MuRF’s filters was too high.

Moog Music too the classic MuRF design and tweaked to be more suitable for bass tones. According to the company, the Bass MuRF is perfect for bass, for guitarist wanting a darker tone and even for bass synth.

Moog Expander

The second product introduced was the RME CV Expander for the Voyager rackmount synth. The new CV Expander is based on the VX-351 CV Expander for the original Voyager, but with some updates, based on customer feedback, and the unique requirements of the rackmount Voyager.

The expander lets Rackmount Voyager users work with the synth in modular fashion, creating new custom patches not possible on original MiniMoogs, or interfacing the synth with other equipment.

Bass MuRFMoog Music has introduced the Bass MuRF, a new version of the award winning MuRF voiced specifically for bass instruments.

New to the Bass MuRF is a shelving filter on the lowest band, with a cutoff frequency of 110 Hz. This means that all very low frequency content passes through the Bass MuRF’s filter section clear and strong. The remaining 7 filters are resonant filters and are also voiced for low frequencies.

The Animation section includes some exciting new beat-oriented patterns and more of the great diversity of tone-mangling the original MuRF is capable of. Used as a fixed filter bank, the Bass MuRF offers a wealth of tone sculpting capabilities. Whether you play synth bass, bass guitar, or bass saxophone, the Bass MuRF is ready to rumble.

Moog expects to ship the Bass MuRF beginning in mid-December, and recommends preordering to avoid delays.

More information is available at the Moog site.

Moog MURF Effect

Moog Music has announced a new product, the MF-105 MuRF, short for Multiple Resonance Filter Array.

The MuRF has 8 filters, with levels controlled by 8 sliders. It looks like a graphic eq, but the sound of the filters are very different: warm and resonant. Each slider controls the filter for a pitch range.

What makes the MuRF unique is the ability to animate the levels of the 8 filters in up to 24 preset patterns. The rate of the patterns can be set by a knob, expression pedal, or plug a footswitch into the tap tempo input to match the rate to the tempo of your song.

Rhythmic variations can be created by adjusting the levels of the filters. The Envelope control sets the shape of the modulation, which can be set for percolating techno rhythmic modulation or shimmering timbral morphing. Other controls include Input Drive, Output Level and Wet/Dry Mix.

MuRF shares the features that are common to all Moogerfoogers. All the audio processing is 100% genuine analog, for warm, fat sound quality. Any line level or instrument level audio signal may be processed. Wide-ranging player parameters may be controlled from the panel knobs as well as from expression pedals or CV-compatible analog synthesis instruments. The MuRF is housed in the classic Moogerfooger “double-wedge” enclosure that may be used on a table or on the floor.

The MuRF is expected to begin shipping around the end of March 2004. Information is available at the Moog Music site.
