Every Sunday, we bring you a sweet Sunday Synth Jam or two.  This week we’ve got a classic synth jam from Keith Emerson.

OK – this is as much of an organ jam as a synth jam, but when you hear Emerson, Lake and Palmer wail on Knife Edge, there will be no quibbles about that sort of thing.

Keith Emerson jams on organ, wails on the synth, engages in onanistic pantomime with a ribbon controller, makes strange electronic mating noises with a spring reverb and then finishes the thing off by playing the organ again, backwards.

Moon Tide by vocaloid2

This song is “sung” by Vocaloid Hatsune Miku.

Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer, developed by Yamaha, that attempts to recreate the sounds of the human voice. “Hatsune Miku” is Vocaloid programed for Japanese pronunciation.

In this example, Hatsune Miku sings a Moon Tide. Propellerhead Reason is used for the sound of the accompaniment part, and Logic controls the performance data.

VstCafe demonstrates how to make an awesome progressive house lead:

This tutorial shows how to create (with Synapse Toxic II 2.5 vst plugin – btw. it’s a killer synth for such low price) a simple, progressive house lead similar to those well known kaskade, dmau leads.

As you can see, I didn’t use internal delay / reverb unit. I used external – Ableton effects such as reverb, ping pong delay, EQ and compressor (sidechaining) – really nothing special.

      something to think about

I also used these realistic sounds in a psychological way. With The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, I used animal sounds – as you say, the coyote sound – so the sound of the animal became the main theme of the movie. — Ennio Morricone
