Propellerhead has released a new funk-flavored ReFill, Soul School, that features the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s.

To introduce Soul School, Propellerhead put together several very nicely done videos that introduce the library and the people behind it.

The Reason Soul School ReFill is available for download through Propellerhead’s web shop for EUR €79 / USD $99.

The Soul School ReFill sample library features twelve unique soul and funk instrumentals with all their musical elements – bass, drums, guitars and horns – in Propellerhead’s tempo-independent REX format, as well as a collection of the 60’s and 70’s-sounding instruments multisampled for use with Reason’s NN-XT sampler and Combinator device.

Composed exclusively for this ReFill and recorded using vintage technology, all material was played live by funk-savvy session musicians – simultaneously, without overdubs.

Every drum fill, bass line, guitar riff and horn lick featured in Reason Soul School is in Propellerhead’s REX format, sampled in different keys for full flexibility and tempo independence.

Complementing the loops and licks are the multisampled versions of the included instruments, as well as the Reason Soul Keys ReFill, containing patches for the Reason Factory Sound Bank and Propellerhead’s free Electromechanical ReFill as well as Abbey Road Keyboards and Reason Pianos based on the Soul School sound.

This three-part Propellerhead Reason 4 tutorial looks at using Thor as a switchable filter.

via SirSedricMusic:

This is a quick look at using the Thor Polysonic Synthesizer as a Switchable Filter in Reason 4, using Combinator assignments.

To save time, I’m assuming you already know a thing or two about Reason;

1) You know how to create Combinators and assign Reason controls to hardware controls.

2) You know how to route devices within a Combinator.

3) You have a general understanding of the principles which drive Reason.

If you don’t know any of these things, do some searching. There are many great tutorials out there, and with a little patience you’re sure to find some to get you started. Try the PropellerheadsSW channel, they have some decent stuff to get you started.

In this particular tutorial I’m using a ReDrum as the audio source for simplicities sake. I’m just trying to give everyone a good idea of the concept behind this so we can cover some more interesting and fun stuff in parts 2 and 3.

My apologies in advance for the noisy audio, I had to record this using my built-in mic. Future tutorials will have better audio, I promise.

thanks to seth sandler for the awesome tutorial to build the mtmini.

visit www.sethsandler.com and nuigroup.com if u want to build one for yourself.

also thanks to mr greg kullum for the surface-editor application.

how it works?

its a simple box which has a webcam inside, the camera tracks the fingers touching the surface, an application called ‘community core vision’ picks up the images and transforms them into tuio signals, not the surface editor application takes these as input and moves whichever control is touched. and then sends out the assigned midi message.
which is picked up by reason…and voila…a multitouch control surface.

my template can control
nn19,nnxt,subrtactor,thor,maelstrom— mod envelopes, amp envelopes, filters, level, pan etc. redrum levels, pan, and u can play drums on the surface.

im putting in more functions into it.
let me know if u need the reason-controlsurface file for surface-editor.

TB-303 & Reason 4.0 – Using Reason to Generate DIN Sync

Using classic synth gear with music software has never been easier. This video demos synchronizing a Roland TB-303 with Propellerhead Reason by using CV/Pulse signals routed through a MOTU 896HD interface.

Clock and Control Signals are generated in Reason Devices and converted to audio signals. The audio is then passed through a converter cable that connects to any Roland DIN-Sync device like the 303, 606, 808, 909, etc.

Record and the future of Reason

By request, it seems we need to clarify our product road map and how Record and Reason relate.

Hopefully by now it is clear that Record is a stand-alone program. We simply call it Music Recording Software, because that’s what it is. Record is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to make music recordings, whether you’re a band, a songwriter, a guitarist, vocalist or all of that on different days of the week.

Record is also, thanks to its incredible built in mixer and effects, a great choice for mixing and finalizing any music production.

Reason also is – and remains – a stand-alone program. Reason we call a Music Production Instrument. It contains the ultimate software instrument set, combined with tons of great effects. Reason is the perfect choice for anyone who plays keyboards, in the bedroom, studio or on stage. It’s also great for all of us who love making music with drum machines, synths, samplers and effects.

Thanks to its powerful yet simple sequencer, Reason is also a great production tool. But in a slightly different way from Record, and that’s precisely the point.

For Record – think guitars, vocals, recording, music production and mixing.
For Reason – think keyboards, synths, samplers drum machines, effects – and music production.

What the two programs have in common is their purpose: To help you make more and better music, to sound fabulous and having a great time while doing it.

Some people will want to use Record only. Some people will want to use Reason only. It just depends on what kind of musician you are.

Those who are really smart will use both programs together; it’s the ultimate combination. The integration is 100%, making you far more productive than any recording application and plug-in combination available out there. Yeah, yeah, we’ve said that before, but we’re so excited about it, sorry.

The Future of Reason

But back to Reason and it’s future.

There are so many ways to use Reason. Stand-alone, as a production tool. As the best keyboard workstation you can find. As the ultimate instrument rack for your DAW. As an ideation tool. As a beat production station. The list is endless.

Even though Propellerhead have now introduced Record, we’re totally committed to Reason as a product in itself. Propellerhead will continue to develop Reason. Just like we always have. In fact we have a dedicated team working on an update of Reason right now. We always do.

And the same is true for ReWire, we will support it tomorrow just as we do today. Adding Reason to your DAW will continue to be the most powerful vitamin injection you can give it.

Which Should I Buy?

Yeah that is the question, isn’t it? What to buy? Reason? Record? Both? The good news is you don’t have to think too much about it. If you buy Reason now, you can add Record later, no problem. Even regardless of which version of Reason you have.

Or vice versa, if you buy Record, you can add Reason when you feel the time is right. We’ve made it simple and we’ve set the prices to make it a no-brainer to start anywhere and go from there.

Also, a lot of the concepts in the programs are the same, so if you start with Reason now, you will have learned a lot of techniques that you can use in Record later.

There will also be special offers for those who get Reason now and want to buy Record when it ships on 09/09/09. Exactly what those offers are depend on which market you are in, so please check with your local distributor.

So, don’t wait. You can’t lose.

Ernst Nathorst-Böös

Clear As Mud?

It seems that Propellerhead has a marketing disconnect with some musicians about their current product lineup. A lot of people have a better understanding of what Record isn’t (a DAW) than what it is.

Beyond that, though, they face the issue that what a lot of people is an update to Propellerhead Reason that adds recording features, instead of a new product to buy and learn how to use.

We’ve published extensive coverage of Propellerhead Record – but it looks like Propellerhead needs to do more to educate users about what Record is and what it can do.

This is a demo of Peff using Reason 4.0 to control an Oberheim S.E.M. with CV and gate signals:

I had Reason sending Note CV and Gate CV signals out through the MOTU 896 into an old Oberheim CPS-1 / S.E.M. module. A bit of tweaking was required to get the note cv scaling set, but after finding the right settings, I had Thor acting as a MIDI to CV converter.

With this Thor patch, it’s possible to control analog synthesizer systems (in this case the Oberheim S.E.M.) from the Reason MIDI Sequencer, Thor Pattern Sequencer, Matrix Pattern Sequencer, any LFO source in Reason, and the RPG-8 Monophonic Arpeggiator. It should also be noted that because the Reason 4.0 sequencer is sample accurate, theoretically, the synchronization should be very solid when sending CV signals through the MOTU audio interface.

via PeffTV:

http://www.peff.com/journal/2009/06/12/reason-cvgate-to-analog-synths/ Reason CV signals converted to audio signals via the THOR Polysonic Synthesizer, will send a DC voltage through the Mark of the Unicorn 896 HD audio interface.

In this manner Reason 4.0 can be used to control a variety of analog synthesizers that comply to the traditional CV/Gate voltage protocols. I tested this configuration with the ARP2600, which also works very well.

If not, at least it’s entertaining. Don’t miss the atonal synth jam!
