Critter and Guitari’s Color Television Oscilloscope is a $99 device that turns your audio input into psychedelic video output:

This video device has an audio input and video output. It behaves like a traditional oscilloscope, with a control to change the display mode and colors. The sweep rate is fixed at the NTSC frame rate, about 30 Hz.

One knob controls the input gain, and the other controls the display. There are 2 modes: line mode, and color shifter mode. The first half of the knob rotation is color shifter mode, and the second half is line mode. Line mode is simply a line with adjustable width and color. Color shifter mode is made up of bars that change color. The rate of change is adjustable.

Video Scope mounted to painted panel with 2 knobs, RCA audio input, video output (NTSC only), 9v power input (adapter included)

Here’s some video of the Color Television Oscilloscope in action:

These look like they could be a great effect, run off different channels of audio.

If you’ve used Critter and Guitari’s Color Television Oscilloscope, leave a comment with your thoughts!

Sunday Synth Jams: Here’s a step-sequenced modular synth jam, with an old-school psychedelic light show.

Back in the day, you didn’t have a modular synth jam without a psychedelic head trip light show. Listening to synth music wasn’t just about listening to some music – it was a mind-expanding experience.

Warning: This video may ruin cherished memories of your childhood – especially if you’re over 40 and you once liked Sesame Street, the Ed Sullivan show, happy synth pop, young women in miniskirts or psychedelic wonderlands.

Synthesist Dana Countryman shared this bizarre psychedelic Mooged-out video from a 1969 Ed Sullivan Show.

It features Sesame Street’s Big Bird, dancing with the June Taylor Dancers to the happy synth pop Jean-Jacques Perry track, Minuet of the Robots. The clip uses Perrey’s original Vanguard Records’ recording, but, later in the song, the CBS Studio Orchestra joins in.

While the video may be a little traumatizing, Perrey’s happy synth pop is as insanely catchy as ever.

Countryman has toured in recent years with Perrey, performing Perrey’s synth pop classics live.

The track was produced entirely with Maschine, which was hosted in Ableton Live8. I used a delay and Beatlookup from the Reaktor User Library. Enjoy

This is the latest sneak preview for Glenn Marshall’s Zio – an interactive generative psychedelic visualizer:

Presently you can change most of the branching and shading and can easily navigate with dragging/pinch zoom and rotate. You can pause the animation at any time and still interact/move around, and also save pictures to your photo library.

The interface is just a temporary one at the minute for testing, it will be redesigned and probably have twice as much features seen in the demo – including particle motion and trails and the ability to tweak the underlying math and algorithms.

This demo is a screen cap of the iPhone simulator – at times the frame-rate is jerky – but actually runs okay on the real device! (don’t know why that should be).

Zio is still in developement and Marshall is looking into various options for letting the iPhone access audio, so that the visuals may be able to react to music.

If Marshall can get this right, though, Zio could be one of the coolest apps yet for the iPhone.

Here’s a video update from Glenn Marshall of his Zio generative music video application.

Gorgeous, isn’t it?

Marshall’s creating an application that creates generative visuals based on elements in the music that you’re listening too, along with your interaction with your iPhone or iPod touch.

Marshall explains:

It’s these concepts, if ‘nailed’, will allow endless generative animation, yet maintaining visual interest, surprise, non repetition, artistic sensibility, spatial and temporal variety, and a subtle sense of narrative and purpose. In short, something which seems alive and creating it’s own world, endlessly.

The music in this demo is my own, and I’m considering ’shipping’ it with the final app when it’s finished, you can of course disable this and play anything from your Ipod.

Also to be added are the interactive features, moving around, zooming in/out, and shaking the phone will randomise the colour scheme and growth features.

No release date has been set for Zio.

JeffreyPlaide’s Non Objective Variable Noesis is an exercise in random and improvised structures:

This musical piece explores alternate textures and combinations.

Using the TS-404 software synthesizer, various short improvised melody lines were created with multiple step sequences and doubled with stereo echo, flanging and chorus effects. The improvised simple lines were looped to produce combinational polyrhythms.

The bassline was created on a Korg R3 synthesizer. The composition concludes with randomised textures and heavy reverberation ending with a slowed down version of the original melody. The piece is to be appreciated on an intellectual level as the direction of the music is based on structure rather than harmony, creating unusual rhythms.

The visuals are from a variety of expressive television sources superimposed together with colour channel mixing effects to create a psychedelic effect. Overlayed with this are modulated geometric animations to create visual rhythms.

This is the music video for Tiga’s Mind Dimension.

via officialtiga:

Jeff Minter and Ivan Zorzin of Llamasoft were entrusted to translate Tiga’s ‘Mind Dimension’ to the Video Dimension.

How? By making a video about that very dimension.

Founded in 1982, Llamasoft has produced experimental visual synths, as well as arcade-style console hits like ‘Tempest 2000′ and, more recently, the awesome ‘Space Giraffe’.

None of which, unfortunately, featured Tiga (with the obvious exceptions of Tiga Force, Tigaquest and Tiga’s Pro Handball).”

The video is loosely based on an experience I had after eating a mood ring,” says Tiga. “In my quest to recreate it, I rented a pyramid to be used in the video. Was it worth committing to a nine-year Egyptian tour? Judge for yourselves.”

The reactive environment combines ambient music and abstract visuals to create a new type of audiovisual space.

Technical Description:

“We developed custom software using Openframeworks, an open development environment for C++. It uses 6 Mac Pro Computers, Mac Mini for Sound, 2 Mantis MG video servers, Media Matrix Digital Signal processor, 6 firewire AVT Guppy IR cameras, and custom IR filtered lighting. In the projection each point is given an initial x,y and z coordinates and wanders within a limited area. The points uses Delaunay triangulation to find their nearest neighbor points in the environment and send lines to those points. Those lines solidify and form the faceted planes that the video textures are mapped onto. During the Crescendo moment the projection mesh is surfaced with a faceted terrain that maps the pixels of the films to the facets of the surface.”

This new video, by Cut Chemist, is the first music video shot with a 360 degree panoramic lens.
The technological first is cool -but what makes it really cool is the post-Beatles seventies psychedelic visuals.

“It’s one thing to have a dramatic experience you say is impressive,” says neuroscientist Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who led the research. “It’s another thing to say you consider it as meaningful 14 months later. There’s something about the saliency of these experiences that’s stunning.”

Either there’s more to psychedelics than people thought, or John Hopkins just gets some impressive mushrooms.

For a lot of people, though, music is their drug of choice, especially trance music.

If you’re into psychedelic trance music and culture, check out the latest issue of Goagadar, a free psychedelic culture web magazine. It features interviews, music news, trance reviews and even an interview with Hawkwind’s Dave Brock.
