The project involves two people performing in actual and virtual space. Live audio synthesis is achieved using Puredata to respond to body movements. These movements are detected through various technologies including marker based motion capture, flex sensors, pressure sensors, light sensors, accelerometers and the Nintendo Wii.

The performers’ movements are mirrored into Second Life, which is projected into the physical performance space. Live realtime video is also streamed into the virtual performance space, from cameras that are attached to the performers’ bodies. Scaled projections, scale models in virtual space and the projection of virtual instruments onto actual objects are used to create a mixing of the actual and virtual, blurring the lines between the two.

Technesexual consists of the performers engaging in playful erotic acts in physical and virtual space, while using handmade electronic stethoscopes to play the sound of their heartbeats in both spaces, blurring the lines between the two. The stethoscopes consisted of analog stethoscopes connected to piezo sensors wired to 1/8″ audio jacks.

The perfomance captured above was part of the Trasnocheo performance space curated by Susana Cook as part of the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics 7th Encuentro at Mapa Teatro in Bogota, Colombia.

Kosma’s compositions frequently use radical or bizarre methods of working with music and its relationship to the human body and ask alternately for specific forms of human interaction or endurance.

To some, Kosma’s work is cutting edge audiovisual performance art. For others, it’s wankery for intellectuals.

Here are the instruction for performing Kosma’s Blow Job:

A microphone is used to simulate a fellatio. It’s connected to a sound system and adjusted to a level, such that an audio feedback will appear if it’s placed inside a person’s mouth (this can be achieved with no modi?cations to the equipment, but ?ltering out of the high frequencies on the mixer helps to obtain a higher level). The effect should be easy to control for the person – feedback should appear/disappear quickly when putting microphone inside/outside of the mouth. Different levels, ?ltering and position of the speakers and microphone should be tested, also taking in the account the in?uence of audience on the acoustics of the room.

This is the position of the person and the microphone (mounted on a stand). Movements and rhythm should mimic the person’s style of performing the blow job. He/she should use different techniques and positions to bring out different tones and volume. Feedback frequency will change depending on which part of the microphone is covered. Usually this position will produce a higher frequency (the volume can be changed by opening and closing lips) and this position will produce a lower frequency. Any accompanying noises like breathing or the teeth or the tongue sounding on the body of microphone should also be audible. Similarly, the use of hands or any other body part should be used as normally in the fellatio.

The duration is not de?ned. A short condenser shotgun or similar microphone type should be used.

The effect will differ with various sizes of speakers and (but to a lesser degree) of ampli?er and mixer.

Wojciech Kosma lives between Berlin and London, working between art and composition. His artworks and performances are often spatial, sonic, obliquely interactive and poetic, creating speculative aesthetic interventions in public and gallery space. At the time, we thought that Italy was the place to be if you got reincarnated as a lab rat. 

But those Italians scientists didn’t stop with giving rats ecstasy and exposing them to music at club noise levels.

Somehow, they got the funds to do additional research and this time they studied the sex lives of clubbing rats. 

And it turns out that raving rats, at least in Italy, have pretty lousy sex lives. In fact, a single dose of ecstasy, in combination with loud music, “notably impaired copulatory behavior of sexually experienced male rats”.

In fact, “combined treatment of MDMA and music stimulation did not fully restore normal sexual behavior as the animals reaching ejaculation still showed a marked reduction of copulatory efficiency.”

So, if you’re worried about your copulatory efficiency, and place any weight on scientific studies like this, you’ll want to avoid the “combined treatment of MDMA and music stimulation.”

Here’s the details of the study:

Abstract

The effects on sexual behaviour of acute low doses of methylendioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) (0.3, 1, 3 mg/kg/i.p.), alone or in combination with exposure to loud music (1 h stimulation), were investigated in Wistar rats. Results indicate that acute MDMA, at dose of 3 mg/kg, notably impaired copulatory behavior of sexually experienced male rats. 

In particular, MDMA-exposed animals exhibited a significant increase in intromission and ejaculation latencies as well as a significant decrease in percentage of rats displaying copulatory activity (one intromission at least). Surprisingly, one hour exposure to loud music, which per se resulted ineffective, antagonized the suppressive effect of MDMA by increasing the percent of animals displaying sexual activity.

However, combined treatment of MDMA and music stimulation did not fully restore normal sexual behavior as the animals reaching ejaculation still showed a marked reduction of copulatory efficiency.

These findings demonstrate that the systemic administration of a single low dose of MDMA, alone or in combination with loud music, which is commonly present in certain environments such as rave parties, notably impairs copulatory activity of male rats.

Working on the basis that a club should be self sufficient and not a drain on the environment, Club4Climate has come up with the varied and interesting ways to be eco-friendly.

Once Dr. Earth achieves his goal of sustainable clubbing through urine and sweat powered clubs, he plans to create Club4Climate Island, a sexy eco-friendly holiday destination, where “you can save the world lying down drinking cocktails by the pool.

Call me old-fashioned, but I’m a little skeptical about the idea that clubbing is going to save the world. And Dr. Earth makes me think that Mini-Earth has to be hiding somewhere.

But if Dr Earth can save the earth with clubbing, sex and hedonism, count me in.

Somewhat OT: This horribly dated “educational” video reveals the shocking fact that “female deviation in normal sexual behavior greatly exceeds the male!”

According to reports, Apple lawyers claim that Ann Summers’ advertising for its iGasm iPod sex toy, right, is a blatant rip-off of Apple’s iPod advertising. Apple has sent a cease and desist letter, warning “We hope this request to remove it immediately will prevent us having to consider further action.”

The iGasm hooks up to your iPod, MP3 player, laptop or CD player and vibrates in sync with the beat.

The £30 iGasm joins the iBuzz and other sex toys piggybacking on the iPod’s popularity.

The obvious question, of course, is “What’s on her iPod?”

Jessica Vale has announced the upcoming release of The Sex Album. The provocative CD features sounds (with the exception of Vale’s vocals) taken entirely from the recordings of live sex that were manipulated into dark electronic and ambient music.

Synthtopia recently interviewed Vale about making The Sex Album.

This is the first release from artist/producer Jessica Vale, who collaborated with fellow NYC producer, Ivan Evangelista to make the record. The Sex Album is not meant to be pornographic; rather it was created to explore the use of sounds, making an innovative release that maintains a musical sense.

“The trend in music today is to look at sexuality on a safe, superficial level, when what most people experience is anything but that,” says Vale. “I wanted to make an album that dug a little deeper and reflected what’s really happening. We composed the music from processed sex recordings to punctuate the subject matter and to create a unique, lush sound-scape.”

In March 2003 Vale and Evangelista began pursuing couples that were willing to participate in the project. Shortly after they started their search, they found seven couples of different sexual orientations that were interested. The participants were strategically strapped with microphones and every sound from racing hearts and moans to their most intimate moments were morphed into bass lines, percussions and every other instrumental sound heard on the disc.

Though the album is not to be perceived as an aphrodisiac, sensual undertones are significantly present. At certain points the music can evoke a trance, such as in Look Pretty. The track Sarajevo has a more danceable, upbeat feel, while Boy in Black and Welcome explore darker musical aspects.

A preliminary limited edition version of The Sex Album was released in May 2005, available online only. The upcoming release includes additional remix tracks from electro-industrial mixer, Xris Flam (KMFDM, DJ Spooky), Brian Jackson, Jeff Saphin, Jean-Luc Cohen and more. Vale and Evangelista plan to take the album on the road as well. As you could imagine, the show will be anything but the norm.
