Sony has introduced Sound Forge Pro 10, the latest version of its professional digital audio production suite for Windows.

Update features include event-based editing, the élastique time stretch and pitch shift plug-in, interactive tutorials and a mastering effects bundle.

Details below.

If you’ve used Sony Sound Forge Pro 10, leave a comment with your thoughts!

New Features:

Event-based editing is ideal for precise audio mastering, assembling project sketches, or laying out tracks for authoring disc-at-once CDs. In Sound Forge 10, users can quickly move, split, slip, and trim events, create fades, apply ASR envelopes and crossfades within in a single data window for more precise audio control.

Integrated disc-at-once CD burning results in time savings and provides a more efficient workflow when generating Red Book compliant disc-at-once premasters of music suitable for professional replication. Perform full PQ code editing, create live-style CDs, add CD text and metadata, and use high-resolution source audio with precise conversion to Red Book audio.

The élastique time stretch and pitch shift plug-in provides better sounding audio when processing audio files. Users can also monitor and adjust settings while previewing in real-time, and select from various stretching methods that are tailored to their source audio including Pro, Soloist, and Efficient modes.

The iZotope 64-bit SRC utilizes a hybrid low pass filter design, resulting in pristine audio with less aliasing converting material from one sampling rate to another. The iZotope MBIT+ dither employs psychoacoustic methods to distribute noise into less audible ranges, resulting in improved audio and smoother fades when converting the bit rates of audio files.

Musical instrument file processing (.DLS, .SF2, .GIG) – Sound Forge Pro 10 software opens, processes, and saves DLS, GigaStudio/GigaSampler, and SoundFont 2.0 musical instrument files. Users can view bank, instrument, note range, and sample information. Effects and processes can easily be added directly to samples.

Customizable window layouts are designed to maximize productivity by allowing users to create and save multiple unique interface layout configurations for single and dual monitor systems, and recall a window layout for specific editing tasks such as audio editing, CD layout, and multichannel file editing.

Mastering Effects Bundle 2 powered by iZotope – The powerful bundle of audio mastering tools included with Sound Forge 10 is valued at over $200 and includes six professional plug-ins to expertly master and enhance audio production: Mastering EQ, Mastering Reverb, Multiband Compressor, Mastering Limiter, Stereo Imager, and Harmonic Exciter.

Interactive tutorials – Sony Creative Software’s unique interactive tutorials provide walkthrough demonstrations of common features and functionality, including DAO CD burning, vinyl recording and restoration in order to help users spend less time learning and more time editing and mastering audio projects.

Price and Availability

The Sound Forge Pro 10 digital audio production software is now available in English and Japanese. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for Sound Forge Pro 10 software is U.S. $499.

In addition to continuing to support and promote the existing range of Oxford Plug-ins: EQ, Dynamics, Limiter, Inflator, Reverb and Transient Modulator, the new company will be concentrating on new innovations to expand the product line.

“The Sony Oxford Plugins reputation for quality and performance reflects the pedigree of our products,” says Sonnox Managing Director, Rod Densham. “As an independent company with global recognition, we are dedicated to improving and expanding these tools. We are confident Sonnox can look forward to a future of continued growth, starting with the launch of our Native versions for Audio Units and VST at Musikmesse 2007.”

Sonnox launched a full native range of its Oxford Plug-ins at Musikmesse this week. Compatible with Audio Units, VST and RTAS applications such as Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Nuendo and Pro Tools LE, the new range has been widely anticipated by users of native workstations.

“The demand for true native compatibility for Oxford Plug-ins has grown dramatically over the past eighteen months,” Eames reports. “We are delighted to be showing all our native plug-ins on Logic and Cubase at this year’s Musikmesse. The initial interest after launching the first three Audio Units versions in January has been genuinely overwhelming, with many users indicating their preference for the Oxford 6 Pack bundle when all the plug-ins are compatible with their platform.”

NOTION was used to create orchestral content for Pass the Ring, one of several Theme libraries for Sony Cinescore soundtrack creation software.

Theme libraries are self-contained music content packages that have been engineered exclusively for use within Cinescore software. Each Theme contains multiple variation presets that can be fine-tuned by adjusting settings like mood, intensity, tempo, and more. The result is an unlimited number of unique, royalty-free compositions that fit perfectly to the length of a video clip.

Pass the Ring includes musical expositions of love, emotion, and celebration, which in large part called for orchestral musical selections. NOTION Music was called on to deliver arrangements as well as final audio files of such classics as Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, Wagner’s Here Comes the Bride, and Pachelbel’s Canon.

“This project was a great creative opportunity for our team of score creators as well as a chance to push the envelope of our NOTION technology,” said David Oertel, Music Content Manager at NOTION Music. “The team was challenged to come up with many variations on standard wedding themes. While the Caribbean version of Here Comes the Bride or the country version of Canon didn’t make the final version, it really showcased the caliber of our content creators as well as the sound quality and flexibility of our NOTION software.”

Oertel’s team was able to deliver finished content utilizing only NOTION software and in-house sound libraries, which contain thousands of samples of the renowned London Symphony Orchestra recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studio. Once the arrangements had been finalized, the virtual orchestra was then mixed inside the software and “performed” with NOTION’s NTEMPO real-time playback feature. This feature allowed the team to “conduct” the software to capture an expressive performance with real-time tempo changes and holds. These performances were then captured as .WAV files for final delivery to Sony.

NAMM 2006 Winter Show: Sony Media Software announced ACID Pro 6, a significant upgrade to its professional loop-based music creation and production software.

This new release includes several major development enhancements to the recording and MIDI capabilities of the program, transforming version 6 into a full-featured professional digital audio and MIDI workstation. ACID Pro 6 is expected to be available in March at an MSRP of US $399.95.

ACID Pro 6 not only continues to provide the powerful loop-based music creation tools that it’s been well known for since 1998, but now provides users with a multi-track recording and MIDI sequencing environment that will appeal to creative professionals and audio engineers looking to record, produce and mix in ACID software’s fast, efficient and easy-to-master platform.

“Since its launch nearly 10 years ago, ACID software has redefined the way music is produced by allowing users to arrange loop-based segments that matched in tempo and pitch. Our newly enhanced digital music workstation technology introduces the optimal creative platform for music composition, recording and mixing by combining our multitrack audio technologies with comprehensive inline MIDI editing and sequencing,” said Dave Chaimson, vice president of marketing, Sony Media Software.

Chaimson continued: “Starting with a new high-performance multi-threaded audio engine, we’ve reengineered ACID Pro 6 to perform faster and more efficiently not only on dual-core and multiprocessor systems, but also on single-CPU machines providing more efficient track buffering for higher performance at lower latencies. No longer simply a loop-based production tool, this application moves into the category of full-featured DAW’s by combining our highly-decorated ACID music creation technologies, superior 24-bit/192kHz audio support, with new MIDI editing and workflow capabilities that truly change the way in which engineers, producers, and musicians will create, produce and mix audio.” Award-winning composer Russ Landau uses ACID® Pro software and Sony® Sound Series™ loops to create music for “Survivor” and other popular television shows.

“Sony® ACID Pro software is my speed tool for assembling a comprehensive collection of thematic variations in minimum time,” said Landau. “Its new multitrack and MIDI capabilities are a significant enhancement to an already stellar application.”

New Digital Music Workstation Technologies

Multitrack Audio and MIDI Recording – Simultaneously record multiple tracks of audio and MIDI into the ACID timeline through a variety of methods, including step recording, punch in/out, continuous looping and more.

Multiple Media Files per Track – Layout multiple media files per track, including one-shots, Beatmapped events, loops and disk-based files with new automatic crossfade capabilities.

Inline MIDI Editing – MIDI data can be manipulated directly on the ACID timeline, using either a piano roll or a drum grid interface. Edit all note position, velocity, pitch bend, and controller information using an easy, visual approach in the main multitrack interface.

MIDI Filtering and Processing – ACID Pro 6 software provides processing of MIDI data directly on the timeline, including quantization, swing, editing of velocity values, event duration changes, and more.

VSTi Parameter Automation – Using automation envelopes, ACID Pro 6 software provides increased mixing flexibility for VST instrument parameters.

Drum Map Editing – The Drum Map Editor provides an intuitive way to create custom Drum Map templates, to make working in the Drum Grid even easier.

Project Sections – ACID Pro 6 software now provides for the creation of project sections that lets users more efficiently rearrange time-based segments of audio and MIDI events located across multiple tracks.

External Control Surface Support – ACID Pro 6 software allows for hands-on mixing using external hardware control surfaces. Control record, transport, envelopes, faders, mutes, solos, pans, and effects automation. ACID Pro 6 software includes native support for the Mackie® Control Universal, however the generic control interface option allows user-customizable mapping of up to five generic control surfaces

By selecting ‘My Favorite Shuffle’, the device automatically selects the most listened to 100 songs and plays them at random. The ‘Time Machine Shuffle’ function randomly selects a year and plays all of the songs from that particular year that are currently held on the device.

Once switched on, a mobile phone style ‘Home’ menu appears offering nine different options that can be selected via the four-way directional button. These include ‘Music Library’, ‘Play Mode’, ‘Initial Search’, ‘Intelligent Shuffle’, ‘Favorite 100′, ‘Play History’, ‘Settings’, ‘Playlist’ and ‘Now Playing’.

Music can be searched in a variety of ways, via ‘Genre’, ‘Artist’, ‘Album’, ‘Song’, ‘Release Date’, ‘Rating’ and ‘Recently Transferred’, all of which can be scrolled through to enable users to find their music faster and easier. Sony WALKMAN records three years of playback history that can be searched and also features the first ever ‘Initial Search’ on a hard disc device, allowing the user to scroll from A-Z for ultimate ease of use.

The 20GB Sony Walkman is available in two colours, violet and silver; while the 6GB unit comes in the additional colours of pink and blue. All models are packaged with colour-coordinated headphones.

Sony WALKMAN features ATRAC3plus and MP3 playback and ships with the new “CONNECT Player” that offers advanced music library management as well as providing seamless access to the CONNECT™ catalogue of more than one million tracks and albums available for download.

Enhancements include two new patent-pending technologies: The Media Manager is a new technology for browsing and tagging media assets that greatly enhances the user’s ability to track, label and store media files including loops, video and stills. Additionally, the unique Groove Mapping and Groove Cloning technologies provide enhanced ways for users to sonically interact with their loops and samples collection.

“Because ACID software is considered to be the top loop-based music creation application, we felt compelled to spend the past several years developing new technologies that once again provide users with innovative workflow enhancements and more important, new innovations for musical expression,” said Dave Chaimson, vice president of marketing for Sony Media Software.

“In addition to our new media management system and powerful groove quantization tools, we’ve added new features that users have been requesting since version 4,” Chaimson continued. “Whether it’s VST plug-in hosting, ReWire device support, nestable folder tracks, or enhanced workflow and project management features, ACID software will continue to provide the most well-rounded solution for creative and musical exploration.”

“Our dealers have been anticipating the launch of this new version of ACID with great enthusiasm, and it comes just in time for the holiday season,” said Paul Foschino, senior manager for pro audio in Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems Division. “The combination of ACID 5’s new features, our new ‘Sony Sound Series: Loops & Samples collection and ACIDplanet.com make this much more than just an ACID software launch. It is now one of the most powerful music creation tools available and complemented by the best content and destination site for music creation. We will also be bundling it with Sound Forge Audio Studio, a $69.95 value, in all boxes sold through our retail partners.”

New features in ACID Pro 5 software include:

VST Plug-In Hosting – Expanded ability to apply VST plug-ins at the track or project level.

ReWire Device Support – ACID Pro 5 includes ReWire “synth” support so users can incorporate ACID Pro 5 software as a plug-in or instrument within other applications that support ReWire mixer technology.

Additional ACID Pro 5 software features include:

Folder tracks for enhanced project-wide production

At the Summer NAMM show, Sony showed the Vegas+DVD Production Suite of software tools, which includes Vegas 5, DVD Architect 2 and a Dolby Digital AC-3 Encoder software.

Sony Vegas 5 software, the latest version of the award-winning non-linear professional video and audio editing application, now offers increased functionality, more specialized features and the most extensive audio upgrade to date. With advanced, real-time scalable production for SD, HD, HDV and other formats across unlimited tracks, Vegas software is the ideal application for professional DV, DVCAM TM and audio editing and encoding, and an overwhelming favorite among digital video and audio professionals who are looking for a single-platform solution for A/V editing and finishing.

“This program rocks,” said writer/director/producer Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, The Nutty Professor, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls). “I’ve been using Sony Vegas software as my personal editing platform for years. With the new professional features, such as control surface automation, 3D planar compositing and network rendering, we’re now experiencing the true convergence of simplicity meeting high-end production power.”

The Vegas+DVD Production Suite is part of a full line of A/V software assets developed by Sony Pictures Digital Networks, a business unit of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems division manages the U.S. sales and distribution for the software products in the professional A/V, music industry, and government channels.

“Vegas software has evolved into one of the most comprehensive video and audio editing products in the industry and with the addition of the expansive new feature set for both audio and video production, the product’s efficiency is now unrivaled,” said Steve Banfield, senior vice president, technology for Sony Pictures Digital Networks. “Adding in the product’s ability to more efficiently integrate with Sony’s existing hardware and workflow solutions, Vegas 5 software is truly a force to be reckoned with in the professional media production market.”

For the professional end-user, the integration of this feature-rich software with Sony’s pro A/V equipment provides a nearly unlimited array of production options.

“Customers are looking for ways to streamline their workflows,” said Bob Ott, vice president of Sony’s Professional Audio and Video Group. “Their ability to now go to one source and have at their fingertips both software and hardware that takes them from content creation and editing through display accomplishes that goal.”

New features in the Vegas 5 software include 3D track motion and compositing, keyframable Bezier masks, network rendering, transition progress envelopes, subtitle/text export to DVD Architect software, Flash™ .swf import, ACID software loop properties support, keyboard event pitch shifting, 5.1 audio plug-in support at the master bus level, film-style 5.1 surround panning, downmix monitoring, external control surface support, envelope automation recording, customizable UI’s and keyboard mapping, media subclips, realtime A/V event reverse, support for external Sony hardware devices such as the DSR-DU1 and DSR-DR1000 video disk recorders and J-H3 HDCAM player, and more.

New features for the DVD Architect 2 software include programmable end actions, subtitle creation and multiple audio track support, enhanced disk optimization tools, real-time external monitor playback via i.LINK connector/IEEE-1394, Flash™ .swf import, support for 24P DVD encoding, elementary stream import, and much more.

As an added bonus, the Vegas+DVD Production Suite and Vegas 5 software will include a stand-alone version of Boris Graffiti 3.0 LTD for enhanced 2D and 3D titling, along with Red Giant Software’s Magic Bullet Movie Looks ™ plug-in
