Articles about space music:
Stephen Hill sends word that Hearts of Space is discontinuing free anytime access to the weekly HOS show on November 20th, 2006.
“Our hope was that our free service would be an on-ramp to the full Archive service,” said Hill, “but many found that the free weekly show was enough. We’ve done the math and much as we’d like to, we just can’t afford to support it any longer. We could keep it free by adding advertising, but really — no one wants that on HOS programs. So we’re phasing in modest “pocket change” charges for on-demand, anytime access to the weekly program.”
After November 20th, 2006, the weekly show will be free on Sunday only. Weekly program access via the site is now $30/year, or about 57¢ a week.
Code Indigo – Chill
Chill is the latest CD from Code Indigo, a collaboration between David Wright and Robert Fox. Both artists work in various combinations with others and in solo formats, but have an ongoing relationship as a new age/ambient/space rock group as Code Indigo.
On this album, Wright & Fox are joined by Dave Massey (production, rhythm and bass programming) and Andy Lobban (lead and rhythm guitars). The addition of Lobban makes this collection different from other Code Indigo releases, with guitars placed front and center on many tracks.
Shape Your Shade is an unusual but interesting EP from Spies Under Von Magnet Influence. The music is written by Holeg and Von Magnet and arranged, mixed and produced by Spies.
The music draws on a variety of influences, ranging from ambient to classical Indian to flamenco. The highlight of the EP is the 8:32 track Fire of Illusions. The cut layers ambient effects, flamenco guitar, Indian percussion and exotic vocals. The result is a sort of updated exotica.
David Wright – Continuum
With Continuum, David Wright has released a beautiful work of melodic space music that recalls classic electronic music of the seventies and eighties.
Wright creates melodic space music that combines pure ambient sound and more melodic elements. His music draws on the best aspects of ambient, new age and space music. In addition to releasing solo work, he is part of the group Code Indigo.
His recent solo release, Continuum is a selection of 5 extended tracks. The tracks work together to take the listener on a journey through the last 30 years of electronic space music. The CD packaging features space and computer graphics imagery, which effectively represents the contents. The music should appeal to fans of traditional synth music, orchestral electronica and ambient music.
Jon Jenkins – Beyond City Light
Beyond City Light is another great CD from Spotted Peccary Records. If you’re not familiar with the label, check out the Spotted Peccary podcast. It features music and interviews from musicians on the label.
Beyond City Light is gorgeous collection of ambient/space music tracks from Jon Jenkins. The music on Beyond City Light is uplifting and warm, but not without having a little edge of mystery and wonder. The tracks range from more ambient/space music pieces, such as The Calling, or Deep Sleep and Dying Embers, to the more new age sound of Zzyzx Road. There’s even a bit of Berlin-school sequencer work on Through City Light.
