Ranjit Bhatnagar’s Lev is a robot that plays the theremin.

And while he’s far from being a virtuoso, he plays better than a lot of thereminists.

Lev may be the ultimate MacGyver music hack. He was made out of an old floor lamp, some plumbing supplies, a few empty mint tins, and some microprocessors.

Lev is named after Lev Termen or Leon Theremin, a Russian scientist who invented one of the first electronic musical instruments, an instrument which is played without touching, and which bears his name.

This is the video for 2Girlz‘ Fallin Angels, sent my way via Twitter by @podcastmama, who asks “Is this the worst use of AutoTune, ever?”

That’s a tough question to answer, but the video for Fallin’ Angels has a lot going for it:

• Gratuitous rain shots? Check.
• Generic trance beats and sounds? Check.
• Vocalists lip-syncing non-existent harmony parts? Check.
• Hot sisters competing to see who can wear the skeeziest outfit? Check.
• Original lyrics? “I’m just a fallin’ angel, Loosing my religion, Trying hard to fly.” Check.
• A special visit from the high school line-dancing strip squad? Check.
• Classic 80’s style green-screen work? Check.
• Vertical motorcycle riding? Check.

The AutoTuning is just the icing on the cake.

The drum corps tradition is dying. And synthesizers are to blame.

At least, that seems to be the point of this very odd video, 128 in G, by drumcorpsisdying.

Are synthesizers really killing off drum corps?

Or is it rat poison?

I’ve got no effin’ idea, but this video is pretty creepy and kinda makes me want to stay away from drum corps performances for the near future.
