The Hobbyton is a good dubreq stylophone clone with a different square wave sound and vibrato from the late 70s.

This is a performance of Albinoni’s Adagio, arranged for Stylophone, via T0ht0ri:

We use only original Stylophones from 60’s and 70’s.

Here we play Adagio by Albinoni with four stylophones. Stylophone’s sound range is very limited and this composition had to be arranged for this ensemble first.

The venue here is bus and from the window you can see snowy finnish view from the middle of nowhere.

The technicals… Soldered wires to Stylophone PCB to use its keypad / resistor ladder.. put 5V across it and read voltage at stylus by analog input pin on arduino clone (miduino).

Found out input value for each note and sent out MIDI note on/off messages thru serial connection when notes are detected. Simple.

Used Propellerheads reason to make the sounds.

It may be very cool software – but it would be even cooler if Iconic Apps hadn’t already introduced a $ .99 virtual Stylophone for the iPhone, RetroSynth (App Store link).

The Stylophone’s unique sound has featured on numerous hit records, by a diverse range of artists including: David Bowie, Brett Domino, Erasure, Hexstatic, Kraftwerk, Marilyn Manson, Orbital, Pulp, The Raconteurs and They Might Be Giants.

Iconic Apps has introduced a new software instrument for the iPhone, RetroSynth (App Store link). It recreates the old-school sounds of the Stylophone as an iPhone app.
