The synthesizer is an Arrick modular.

The delays are a Lexicon MX200 and a T.C.Elecronic D-TWO.

Six oscillators are used. Two are tone generators and four are modifiers. I also used a noise source for the random sample & hold to an instrument interface which generated odd accent timings for the noise source through a Cyndustries Quad Low Pass Gate.

The moving line is the sequencer run through a Suit & Tie Guy Soundlabs Sea Devils diode ladder Filter module.

The monotone drone is through an Arrick Q150 Transistor Ladder Low Pass Filter. The drone timing was designed by using two low frequency oscillators’ pulse waveforms into a Ring modulator (balanced modulator). The syncopated output was sent to an envelope generator that fired the amplifier and filter.

The resonant octave-sweeping sound is a manually modified FM oscillator tone fed through an Arrick Q107 State Variable Filter in band-pass mode.

No attempt was made to synchronize the various oscillators and sequencers. This gave me a polyrhythmic feel that seemed organic.

A Pan/Fade module sweeps the sounds in stereo for a dimensional effect.

The Berlin School lives on, with Martin Peters’ hypnotic interlocking sequencers + symphonic electronica synth jam, Another Symphonic Theme.

Details on gear + patches below!

via attorks:

This theme is somewhat like the symphonic theme I uploaded in February of this year, yet it is also quite different

The 3 rows of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer drive 4 voices. The first voice you hear is one Q106 VCO through the CGS Steiner Synthacon VCF and the Oakley Equinoxe phaser. The second voice one Q106 VCO through the Q150 transistor ladder filter. These first 2 voices have the same 4 step sequence running on row 3. Then you hear the self build Modular running on row 2 and after that the Creamware Minimax ASB running on row 1. These 2 voices start each with a 4 step sequence which after a while is varied between 5 and 8 steps manually. Then the bass and the theme are played on the Waldorf Q keyboard with a PPG-like sound. The Mellotron-like strings are played on the Roland XP-80. The solo is performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1.

I noticed the video is gradually getting out of sync with the sound; I don’t know what caused that and I also didn’t know how to fix that when editing the clip. So, sorry for that.

It’s Sunday! That means we take a slight break from the non-stop electronic music news coverage and break out the Sunday Synth Jams – new and classic examples of musicians making interesting music with synths and electronic music gear.

You may have seen this one before, because it’s a vintage synth jam from 1977. But it’s Klaus Schulze at his Moogtacular prime…..

If you ever need a definition of Berlin School electronica, this is it!

Tune in, turn on and space out as Klaus Schulze plays live, WDR Köln 1977.

For Schulze fans only: Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite Schulze album is!

Entertain the notion of playing an “automatic composing machine” that can synthesize sounds like this. The system in this video was built between 2007-09, using 1970’s and 80’s technology. Its analog sounds are controlled by digital algorithms that generate rhythm and melody.

When playing it, my role is to set the tuning, sculpt the tones, and create flow by switching elements in and out of the mix.

Sunday Synth Jam: This is the latest video demo of Christian Bannister’s work in progress, Touch Loop Navigator (name subject to change!) – a multi-touch sound manipulation program.

A few months back, we featured Bannister’s Low Frequency Entity. He’s been busy since then.

I love how this combines VJ and DJ concepts, with some hardcore sound manipulation, in an interface that not only looks like it would be fun to use, but would be fun an audience, too.

New in this build of the app:

3D sound visuals for the texture of the sound.

Switching between song segments with controller (old Kaoss pad in front of screen) and no I am not using Live (yet)

Random color when new sound is selected

Integration of the joystick array (my Costa Rica project 2007.12.28)

Real-time effect controls (distortion, bitcrush, delay/feedback, timestretch FX)

Zoom and rate control of the sound

One shot effects on USB keypad next to the controller

“The essence of a new instrument is simply an elegant and effective method for manipulating sound,” says Bannister.

This is one of the most interesting new electronic music interfaces in a long time – and, it looks like a taste of the future.

Sunday Synth Jam: Here’s a little something for the fans of Berlin School electronic music – a nice sequenced synth jam, via attorks:

This theme is inspired by an arpeggiator from the Waldorf Q keyboard which I programmed as sequence to be performed by the Q. At first you hear a bass-like sound from the Creamware MiniMax ASB. After that the Synthesizers.com Modular and the self built Modular are added. At last the sequence from the Waldorf Q Keyboard is added. By varying the decay on the Q the sound becomes more lively.

The accompaniment is played on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the Roland XP-80.

Sunday Synth Jam: This video features an interesting three-way Eigenharp synth jam on Moby’s Extreme Ways.

Is the Eigenharp one bizarre instrument, or what?

It’s actually pretty bad-ass looking. Could the Eigenharp be the cure for the curse of Herbie Hancock?
