In addition to the annual Miami festival, UMF has expanded internationally to include events in Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, San Juan, Madrid and Ibiza.

In his latest email newsletter, Dutch trance superstar DJ Tiesto let slip that he’s involved in the development of a DJing version of Guitar Hero, DJ Hero.

“I am very excited about this!” says Tiësto. “I think this is a great way to introduce people into DJing”.

While DJ Hero is just a video game – it’s sure to have a significant influence on the world of electronic dance music. 

“I am sure this brings new fans to the scene,” says Tiesto. “Hopefully the music I have composed appeals to all kinds of fans!”

In February 2008, Activision filed to trademark the name DJ Hero.

From Samuel Barber’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 11, composed in 1936, and orchestrated as the Adagio For Strings, remixed by Tiësto, via  William Orbit.

This two-cd set is a great compilation of hard-edged trance tracks. The music is presented as a continuous mix, and blends together a broad range of styles. The two CDs are complied by DJ Scott Bond. The mixes tend towards harder dance tracks, and fans of Gatecrashers’ earlier compilations will not be disappointed

CD1 kicks it off with a Jamnesia track, She’s My Friend. The CD hits its stride, though, with a DJ Tiesto remix of Mauro Picotta’s Pulsar 2002. Rob Aker weighs in with the pulsing, blissful trance chords of Dad’s Home. Other highlights are Solar Factor’s No Return, Mo’ Hawk/s hypnotic track, Atlantic Stress, and Believe, a collaboration between In Motion & Traveller that combines spacy effects and beautiful vocals into a great progressive trance track.

CD 2 pumps things up even a little higher. Art of Trance contributes a couple of great tracks, Love Washes Over & Madagasca. Fabio MC & Mario Piu’s Invaders is a hard & minimal & sounds like a fast drive on a dark night. Altitude’s Altitude sandwiches a lyrical middle section between some minimal hard trance. The second half of this CD builds to a long climax, and should leave even die-hard trance fans satisfied.

Tiesto, born Tijs Verwest, is a Dutch native that got into DJing at an early age. When he first started working, he played music from the Dutch pop charts. As he matured, his focus has moved to house, trance, and club-focused music. His first mix series came out on Holland’s Basic Beat Recordings. Tiesto’s later releases came out on Black Hole Recordings, his own label.

DJ Tiesto is in great demand as a remixer. He’s done remixes for the Dave Mathews Band, which covered new territory by taking rock into a house club world. He’s remixed for Moby, including “Love of Strings” and “Life’s So Sweet” from his new album 18.

“Silence”, a remix of Sarah McLachlan’s song, was one of his first major US hits. It is played in clubs worldwide, and is considered one of the most influential progressive dance tracks. Other significant hits include “Flight 643″ and “Gouryella”.

Pure Trance has a lot of good cuts. ATB’s “You’re Not Alone” is presented in an Air Play mix. Tatana’s “Global Thinking” is a blueprint for trance/dance cut. It’s got the filtered synth arpeggios, string synth pads, drum builds, and even the vocal diva. This mix takes a long time to build up; it’s almost three minutes into the song before the drum kicks in for real.

Arome’s “Hands Up” is a great bliss-out trance cut. It slowly builds for about a minute, with the synthesizers getting brighter and brighter until the drums and vocals kick in. There are several other greatest hits cuts: Paul Van Dyk’s “Tell me why”,  DJ Tiesto’s “Suburban Train”, and Moby’s “We are all made of stars.”

Overall, it’s a good “greatest hits” introduction to trance. The cd isn’t a mix cd, which many trance fance may miss. The CD suffers a little from it’s top 40 approach, but does a great job of showcasing some of the best mainstream trance music.
