Matthew Davidson (stretta) put together this demo video for obo – a Max For Live app that turns Ableton Live 8 into a matrix synth, inspired by the addictive-like-crack ToneMatrix synth:

I’ve adapted obo for use in maxforlive, added monome 128/256 support (not required for operation), 16 pattern memory, edit while play, copy/paste patterns and a scale generator (whew).

Check it out and let me know what you think!

tonepadTonePad (App Store link) is a free iPhone app that’s a bit like musical crack.

It’s a matrix synthesizer/sequencer, derived from the design of the Yamaha Tenori On, via Andre Michelle’s ToneMatrix, letting you create musical phrases by pressing virtual “buttons”.

Description:

TonePad features a clean minimalist user interface with a full 16×16 matrix. The sound quality remains excellent regardless of how many notes are playing at the same time. You can save an unlimited number of songs.

The current song is also saved automatically on exit. Sharing your musical creations couldn’t be simpler.

You simply press the Upload button and give your friend the song code. Your friend then downloads the song directly into TonePad by pressing the Download button and entering that code.

Use headphones for best sound.

SoundMatrix builds on ToneMatrix, though, letting you  email your creations to your friends or submit them to an online gallery.

If you give SoundMatrix a try, leave a comment here with your thoughts!

Description:

SoundMatrix is a 16 note sine wave sequencer. There is also a two track drum kit to bring your compositions to life.

Tap on the display to add notes to the seqence. For Best results add individual notes gradually to build your composition. Tap undo remove the last notes added or clear to start again. To save a composition use the email button to send it to yourself for posterity.

If you name your composition it can also be uploaded to the public gallery for rating. If you have any problems or suggestions for improvements you can contact me using the email on the support page.

      something to think about

When Mozart was composing at the end of the eighteenth century, the city of Vienna was so quiet that fire alarms could be given verbally, by a shouting watchman mounted on top of St. Stefan’s Cathedral. In twentieth-century society, the noise level is such that it keeps knocking our bodies out of tune and out of their natural rhythms. This ever-increasing assault of sound upon our ears, minds, and bodies adds to the stress load of civilized beings trying to live in a highly complex environment. — Stephen Halpern
