This is a demo of Smule’s Leaf Trombone: World Stage (App Store link), which takes advantage of the latest features of the iPhone operating system.
“Without the iPhone, there would be no Smule,” said Dr. Ge Wang, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Smule, and Assistant Professor at Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). “And without iPhone OS 3.0, there would be no leaf trombone duets on the world stage.”
Leaf Trombone World Stage is the first massively multi-player musical game, and was designed from the ground-up to take advantage of all the iPhone offers, including multi-touch, location services, full-time data access, and real-time graphics.
Feel the Love is a contest to see who can get the most love on the World Stage with Leaf Trombone, a virtual instrument for the iPhone.

Smule has announced that Leaf Trombone World Stage, an iPhone app described as the first massively multi-player musical game for the iPhone and iPod touch, is now available (iTunes App Store link).
Leaf Trombone builds on Smule’s work with Ocarina, creating virtual instruments that are interesting by themselves – but more interesting as part of music social networks. Leaf Trombone also throws in a dash of American Idol competitiveness.

Arturia Brass 2.0

At the 2009 NAMM Show, Arturia introduced Brass 2, featuring virtual recreations of three wind instruments – a trumpet, a saxophone and a trombone.
The characteristics of the real instruments have been analysed and modelled by Ircam Paris using mathematical algorithms.
Here’s what’s new in Brass version 2.0:
- New physical modelling of the saxophone
- Two new Saxophone mouthpieces
- Possibility to play four instruments at a time using a new Harmonization module.
- Advanced spatialization possibilities
- Improved MIDI control
- Better integration into DAW software.
- Entirely redesigned interface
EastWest’s Quantum Leap “Gypsy”
MusikMesse: EastWest introduced Quantum Leap Gypsy, a collection of detailed virtual instruments aimed at film, TV and game composers. The nylon string guitar, violin and trombone can play in both gypsy and classical styles.
“All of the guitars were sampled with up and down strokes, many velocities and picking styles, various picking angles, release trails, chords and effects,” states Quantum Leap Gypsy producer Nick Phoenix. “Gypsy’s guitars, played by top Los Angeles session guitarist David Kole, simply have to be heard to be believed.”
The violin and trombone feature many articulations, repetitions and even true legato intervals. The trombone in Quantum Leap Gypsy was recorded in EASTWEST Studio 1 (formerly United-Western Studios) in Hollywood California, referred to by many engineers as “the best brass room on the planet.”
The accordions feature multiple setups, all with air flow in and out samples as well as expressive samples, chords and left-hand bass. True to its name, Gypsy also features a gypsy percussion program and extensive flamenco dancers’ foot stomps, as well as traditional castanets. Read more…
