9 Soundware has released DJ Shiftee: Extreme Turntablism a multi-format set of turntable and mixer feedback loops by DJ Shiftee, the 2007 DMC World Champion.

You can get a taste of DJ Shiftee’s work from the video above.

The loops on DJ Shiftee: Extreme Turntablism are taken from performances recorded shortly after his 2007 victory. Extreme Turntablism documents DJ Shiftee as, literally, the king of DJ battling.

Along with turntable loops, included are 44 loops of mixer performances that explore DJ Shiftee’s innovative techniques in which he uses nothing but a mixer to create an astonishing variety of textures. By manipulating a feedback loop with the mixer’s onboard controls, he performs phrases ranging from simple feedback rhythms to blistering walls of noises and bassline-like phrases.

The set consists of 212 loops (2 to 4 bars in length) at tempos 70, 80, 90, and 100 BPM.

The 895 MB download includes 212 WAV files (24-bit/44.1 kHz), 166 REX2 files (24-bit/44.1 kHz), and 166 Apple Loops files (24-bit/44.1 kHz).

Dj Shiftee: Extreme Turntablism is available now for $39.99

Grandmaster Flash, one of the godfathers of turntablism, plans to release a comeback album in 2009, that sounds like it could be an interesting project.

The Bridge: Concept Of A Culture has as its theme the global impact of hip hop, and will feature guest spots from Natacha Atlas and others, including a lot of the hip hop guest-spot regulars. The album is scheduled for release Feb 23rd.

“Wherever I travel as a DJ, I see the incredible power of this artform,” explains Flash. ” am constantly amazed by it. That’s the line that runs through the album – we speak many languages and come from many cultures but, wherever I go in the world, there is one universal culture of hip hop.” Read more…

      something to think about

I am certain that most composers today would consider today’s music to be rich, not to say confusing, in its enormous diversity of styles, technical procedures, and systems of esthetics. — George Crumb
