Steinberg
Steinberg is a leading creator of audio technology. Their products include Cubase, Nuendo and WaveLab.
Steinberg, the audio division of Pinnacle Systems, has been providing technologically-advanced music and media production products for musicians and producers of music, video and film since 1984. Steinberg is today one of the world’s largest audio software houses with more than 1.5 million users worldwide.
Founded in 1984 by engineer Karl Steinberg and keyboard musician Manfred Rürup in Hamburg, Germany, the company released its first product, the Pro-16, 16-track MIDI sequencer for the Commodore C-64 platform in that year.
In 1996, Steinberg introduced the pioneering Virtual Studio Technology (VST) interface and the Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) architecture in its Cubase music production software. VST is an open standard that allows the integration of virtual effect processors and instruments into a digital audio environment. ASIO has advanced to a world standard adopted by audio interface manufacturers the world over. Steinberg innovations that followed include Linear Time Base (LTB), a communication protocol that offers sub-millisecond MIDI timing accuracy and VST System Link, which enables the transfer of synchronization, transport and audio data between two or more workstations equipped with compatible software and hardware.
Steinberg’s audio products remain at the forefront of audio technology today, with its Cubase, Nuendo and WaveLab software forming the backbone of professional studios and audio production facilities worldwide.

WaveLab 5, one of the leading audio editors, is now shipping worldwide. The award-winning audio editing and mastering software reaches version 5 and offers new DVD Audio capabilities.
Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH has announced that the latest version of its award-winning WaveLab audio editing and mastering application is now shipping to resellers worldwide. Offering full multi-channel surround support, a video track and DVD Audio mastering and authoring, WaveLab 5 will cost €699.00.
One of the major new releases in Steinberg’s 20th anniversary year, WaveLab 5 now encompasses a full set of DVD Audio mastering and authoring tools, making WaveLab 5 the first and currently only application to support both CD-Audio and DVD Audio formats within a unified interface. WaveLab 5 is also the first and currently only application to combine all aspects of stereo and multi-channel high-resolution audio editing, processing, mastering and DVD-Audio authoring/burning.
“WaveLab 5 is without doubt the most important update yet for what has become a classic among mastering tools. We are, of course, very proud to be able to offer surround and video support in WaveLab,” commented Arnd Kaiser, Steinberg’s Senior Product Manager for Music Technology. “But perhaps even more important is the fact that every CD mastering studio with WaveLab can now also offer DVD-Audio authoring without having to undergo extra training for DVD-A. We’re convinced that WaveLab will play no small part in increasing the popularity and acceptance of this exciting medium,” he concluded.
