This demo video looks at using the Malekko / Wiard Noisering as a modular synthesizer oscillator.

via bigcitymusic:

Designed by Grant Richter of Wiard and built by Malekko Heavy Industry, the Noisering rocks!

Use it as a clock, noise source, oscillator, cv source and more. This is a really fun module with lots of potential and tons of features packed in.

Here we’re using the Noisering as an oscillator. It doesn’t track one volt per octave exactly but that doesn’t really matter for this type of patch. We’re using the Analogue Systems rs200 sequencer to control the “Ext Rate” input. The first sound is output one of the Noisering running into the Borg Filter in low-pass gate mode, triggered by the Analogue Systems rs60 EG module. The second sound is output number 2, and yes they are very different sounding outputs!

This demo video features the Malekko / Wiard Borg Filter, a modular synth filter designed by Grant Richter described as a cross between a Buchla low pass gate and a Korg MS-20 filter.

via bigcitymusic:

Here’s the first installment of a series of videos of the new Malekko / Wiard Borg and Boogie Filters.

The Borg is an incredible mutant module birthed in the mind of designer Grant Richter of Wiard. It’s a cross between a Buchla low pass gate and a Korg MS-20 filter. Thanks to Malekko Heavy Industry the module is now in Eurorack format and it sounds amazing!

We are sequencing a Cwejman VCO-2RM sine wave oscillator with an Analogue Solutions Oberkorn MkIII. The gate output of the sequencer is triggering a Plan B Model 10 Polyphonic envelope set to a really short pulse (really, really short). Using this type of envelope with a regular VCA would result in a click, no tone.

The Borg plays nice in this instance but the next video will show the meaner side of this beast. There’s actually a jumper you can remove from the back pcb which gives you an extra large helping of resonance.

The “Peaking BP” is actually a pot with a switch. In the off mode, fully CCW, the Borg is in VCA mode. When you start to turn it clockwise it begins to take on a whole new character. The knob at the right we’re adjusting is the CV input amount. This also has a big effect on the character of the low pass gate sound. Malekko Rocks!

P.S. The sweet blue LED does light with every trigger pulse. You just can’t see it because of the frame rate of the camera or something.

It retails for $270.

If you’ve used the Make Noise Wogglebug, leave a comment with your thoughts.

Description:

The Wogglebug’s sole purpose is to overtake the control voltages produceded by your keyboard during performance, and to give voice to your synthesizer’s ID. It is your synthesizer’s ID MONSTER.

A continuation of the “smooth” and “stepped” fluctuating random voltage sources pioneered by Don Buchla, the core of the circuit is based on the Buchla Model 265 “Source of Uncertainty” module, which many consider to be the most musical of all random voltage generators.

Like the 256, the Wogglebug utilizes a vactrol based low frequency smoothing filter, VCO and Sample & Hold to produce Stepped and Smooth (or lagged, slewed) control voltages in the range of 0 to 10 volts. Grant’s Wogglebug design expands on this system to include the other-worldly Woggle CVs (stepped voltages with decaying sinusoids at the edges), which must be heard in action to be truly appreciated.

In a moment of considerable noise, Richter decided to tap into the sound sources at the uncertainly beating heart of the Wogglebug, and bring them forth to the instrument’s panel. He then figured a clever way to “ring modulate” these sounds, and that output now graces the panel of all Wogglebugs.

Thus, the Wogglebug is a complete system, no external modules are necessary… however, all voltage controlled systems long to be tickled, bitten, plagued and eventually destroyed by the Wogglebug.

Until now, the Wogglebug has only been available as the Wiard Wogglebug #5 for the 300 series or as the Wogglebug #3 DIY project, popularized by the folks at electro-music. The Make Noise Wogglebug is neither #3 nor #5. In the truest spirit of Wiard Synthesizers, the Make Noise Wogglebug is not a clone, but instead it is a tribute to all that Woggles, a continuation of the Wogglebug.

Like the #3, the Make Noise Wogglebug is a single Wogglebug system. However, the Make Noise Wogglebug improves upon the #3 by offering further functionality:

External IN for the ringmod circuit

the Ability to directly inject a signal to the heart of the Wogglebug via the Control IN

the Random Gate Burst function

All of which have never appeared within any Wogglebug. Finally, Make Noise has redesigned the Cluster circuit, and thus it has been renamed as CHAOS BALANCE to reflect it’s further purposes. This control now allows for new functionality that has again, never appeared within any Wogglebug to our knowledge.

The module is 14hp and consumes 50mA current.

The wave select on the Miniwave is modulated by a Universal Slope Generator with gain and offset from a CV mixer. The output of the Miniwave is patched directly into the dual channel stereo mixer module for final level adjustment and then it’s off to a small Roland MA-8 monitor.

Wiard analog synthesizer modules are known for their audiophile quality, their exotic looks, and their quirky nature. Each module has features that give it personality, and many of the modules are unique to the Wiard line.

According to Wiard, the “modules form an integrated analog modular synthesizer system. They are intended to be used as a set. There is no problem interfacing them to existing equipment, but they are designed to provide a synergistic set of functions when used together. The designs incorporate virtually every operating feature from every modular designed to this point. In addition, quite a few new features have been developed that are not available from any other system. Many features have been taken from dance music technology and married with features from the avant-garde.”

The modules are bright blue and feature celtic-looking designs. Their look, along with their features, make Wiard modules some of the most interesting modules in production.

The line includes:

The Classic VCO – A pure analog VCO.

The Sequantizer – An eight-stage, CV stage-selectable sequencer / quantizer

The Waveform City – An analog VCO with digital (PROM-based) waveshaper.

The Envelator – A dual, voltage-controlled envelope and chaotic function source

Omni Filter – A voltage-controlled, multi-mode, multi-output analog filter.

The Mixolator – A dual VCA/panner/modulator module.

The Borg Filter – A dual Vactrol-based multi-mode filter and 2 LFOs

Woggle Bug – A dual random voltage and tone source

The modules are compatible with common analog modular synthesizers.
