Electronic Music Studios, University of Texas at Austin
| |
The University of Texas at Austin's Electronic Music Studios (UTEMS) are among the most extensive and technologically advanced of any university in the country. Works created by U.T. faculty and student composers have been recorded on Centaur, CRI, Folkways, and other well-known contemporary music labels, and included on CDs produced by the International Computer Music Association and the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS). They have also been performed at important conference and festivals all over the world, including the International Computer Music Conference, ISCM, SEAMUS and SCI Conferences, and the Bourges Festival, among others. The most recent UTEMS CD release is entitled "Music from The University of Texas Electronic Music Studios," and is Volume 20 of Centaur's prestigious CDCM series of works from major international Computer Music centers. It contains works by faculty composers Karl Korte and Russell Pinkston, along with works by four current or former students: Howard Fredrics, Jody Nagel, Mark Schultz, and Mark Wingate.
Research and development in areas such as real-time digital signal processing, interactive performance systems, and graphical user interfaces for software synthesis languages has been supported by grants from Analog Devices, Apple, High End Systems, IBM, Motorola, NeXT, Silicon Graphics, Texas Instruments, Yamaha International, and White Instruments, among others. Software and Hardware developed in the computer music research center has been presented at major conferences, including the International Computer Music Conference, SEAMUS, the Acoustical Society of America, Audio Engineering Society, EDUCOM, and various IBM Academic Computing Conferences, and published in the Computer Music Journal.

Experimental Music Studios, University of Illinois
| |
Electroacoustic music activities at the School of Music have earned the University of Illinois an international reputation as a leader in the field of contemporary art music. Known for significant creative and technical developments in electronic and computer music composition, the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios were founded in 1958 by Lejaren Hiller and were the first of their kind in the western hemisphere. Faculty members and students working in these studios have been responsible for many of the major developments in electro-acoustic music over the years including the first developments in computer sound synthesis by Lejaren Hiller, expanded gestural computer synthesis by Herbert Br?n, the creation of the Sal-Mar Construction by Salvatore Martirano and the Harmonic Tone Generator by James Beauchamp. Today the facility continues as an active and productive center for electro-acoustic and computer music composition, education and research. Numerous prestigious awards have been won by faculty and students for their work in the studios.
The present facilities include ten specially-designed studios for sound generation, processing, and recording. Scott Wyatt, composer and Professor of composition and theory, is the director of the Experimental Music Studios. Professor Sever Tipei serves as the manager of the EMS Computer Music Project. Access to all EMS facilities is primarily through course enrollment. Music students working within the studios include: composition majors, performance majors, music education majors, and musicology majors. Numerous non-music major students (including students from Theatre, Dance, Electrical and Computer Engineering, LAS, Physics, Biology and Computer Science) also regularly enroll in EMS courses.

Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music
| |
In terms of international standards, the institute for psychoacustics and electronic music (IPEM) has always been a small-scale enterprise. The financial support as well as the amount of people working at the institute has been (and still is) modest, compared to similar projects in surrounding countries such as the Netherlands, France and Germany.
But small-scale implies creativity in IPEM's case, and the institute is proud to have played a role in the development of new music and new music research in Belgium and abroad. That's the reason for this celebration. Up to the present day, IPEM has functioned as a rare breeding center for new ideas: a laboratory for experiment and research.
