All they do anymore is new-agey crap. I've bought a couple of CD's by them in the last ten years, and they all sucked.

They are the most over-rated electronica band ever. They put out two or three good CD's in the seventies, and then they tanked!

Well, Id say they did about 10 good albums in the 70?s. Up to Tangram. After that....ick, but the early stuff is incredible I think.
If you want, check out Edgar Froese "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" or "Aqua"
Brilliant.

I loved their soundtrack for Risky Business, but that was about the last thing by them I got into.

Apparently Steve Reich thought they had ripped him off, though. The Risky Business soundtrack did sound a lot like some of his work, but the electronic orchestration made it much trippier...

It did sound quite a bit like what steve reich does!
Still, the "love on a real train" tune is wonderful and fits the film perfectly.
I still prefer the stuff up to and including Tangram.

TD are a big influence though I have to admit I'm not that fond of their later output. I think it all fell apart for me when Chris Franke left. Their early years of more improvised sequencing and weird spacey stuff was some of the best EM produced imo. If you like that stuff check out bands like Redshift, Arc, Airsculpture and Radio Massacre International.

Thanks for the suggestions. I really liked their early analog/sequenced stuff, but am less enamored of their later work. My least period was when they added the female vocalist and the flute player for one CD.

I'll have to check out the bands you suggested.

If you're not familiar with Alpha Wave Movement, check them out. They are very much influenced by the early Berlin-school stuff and by American space music, but they have their own style, too.

I know Greg Kyryluk (AWM) quite well, we've traded cds and his stuff is pretty good. I really like Cosmology and Drifted into Deeper Lands.

the 70s was their most fruitful period from an artistic viewpoint....i've always loved tangerine dream from when i first heard them...they lost their way somewhat in the 80s when they got into the cheesy soundtrack business but they still produced some good stuff then also...definitely the 70s is the decade to be listening to their stuff though. They've had a massive influence on tons of electronic artist from lots of genres, i love them.

Amen to that. They had 2 or 3 good new age albums in the 1970s then they started putting out crappy new age albums up to today.

I never rated them very high. Though they were popular with the trippy hippie new age crowd.

Those two early Froese works were brilliant only in the fact they were two of the eariest and quintessential new age albums. That and New Age of Earth by Ash Ra Tempel.

Actually, Tangerine Dream has put out some fantastic albums lately that are nothing like "bland new age". You might be surprised. Check out Dream Mixes III and 4, also Mars Polaris, Great Wall of China soundtrack, and Edgar Froese's new solo album Dalinetopia. TD is by no means washed up, and thought I admit some of the late 80's/early 90's stuff was pretty so-so, the last 5+ years have seen some great new music coming from the boys from Berlin.

I think you're being a little easy on their late 80's early 90's stuff...some of it was pretty mass-produced....

Yes that's very true, and I would also add to the list the great "Underwater Sunlight" and "Optical Race" albums.

The intro of O.R is so amazing !

iT'S AN ALBUM BY t dREAM THAT NEVER SEEMS TO GET MENTIONED BUT I THINK THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE FILM "LEGEND" IS ONE OF THEIR BEST. IT ALSO FEATURES AN INCREDIBLE TRACK WITH JON ANDERSON ON VOCALS.

Not my favorite soundtrack by TD, but it has some interesting stuff. One of my favorite Soundtracks is Risky Business. i wish you could get the unedited originals instead of the short chunks they included on the soundtrack album.
