Bebot Robot Synth for iPhone and iPod Touch

This is a demo of Bebot – Robot Synth (App Store Link), which is available now in the App Store for $1.99.

Bebot is a polyphonic musical synthesizer with a unique multitouch control method, personified on-screen as an animated robot character who moves and sings the notes while you play.

Featuring four different synthesis modes, analog-sounding filters, a versatile delay/looping effect and overdrive distortion, Bebot is a full-fledged realtime synthesizer.

Up to four notes can be played and controlled simultaneously using multiple fingers.

  1. The Good:
Its a great instrument and has glitches in it that allows (un)intentional compositions and rhythms. The sustainability of the tone across pitch makes it a great synth (Noise.io UI needs to learn from this)

Hint: how to get a beat.
Put on full echo repeat and echo volume, and then compose something. Compress it with the “echo time” function. This will get a beat going depending on how long you keep “echo time” at the lower left. This results in a bass (in general) pattern. Then you can compose further over it. Using this method you can get maybe two to three (merged) layers of patterns.

    The Mundane:
The little cute robot is cute for about a second and then useless forever more. It would be nice to see a history of your touch trail.

    The Bad:
(as with most iPhone Music apps, apart from Beatmaker and Noise.io) you cannot save the resultant music into a wav file and import it into another app (like Beatmaker.)

Also with each version iteration the menu system on the right is becoming less and less user friendly. The designers need to start using icons and better interaction.

    Verdict:
Get it. You may have to sample the sound from the audio jack to reuse in another app.

  2. I love it. Thanks for calling attention to this very cool app.

I am planning to take it with me to our regular free improvisation group. I’ve been using it with one of those tiny Danelectro Honeytone amps and get great sounds.

  3. Apple’s groovy iPad will rapidly evolve after the pumped up launch during it’s launch. The touch screen and Apple’s potential to fix some problems will help to make the iPad a monster in time.

  4. It's fun! I've got way more than $1.99 out of kicks from it. It's the most fun app I've bought.

Wish I could save my looper compositions for ringtones. That way, I'd never hear someone else's phone and reach for mine by accident.

  5. After I saw Jordan Rudess use the Bebot for the solo second JR solo in 'A Rite of Passage' by Dream Theater I immediately told my parents I wanted an iPod touch for Christmas. Once I got it I started making so many sounds, I made the sounds of the Continuum, Lap Steel Guitar, and Synth that Rudess used in the beginning of Octavarium, the sounds of his continuum in Score, and the sound used in the A Rite of Passage solo, as well as some of my own sounds.

To put it plainly the Bebot is one of the funnest Synthesizers I've ever used, it's like a Haken Continuum Fingerboard that fits in your pocket.
