Cakewalk launched the FA-66 FireWire Audio Interface for Mac and PC at NAMM.

The FA-66 is a portable 6-in/6-out FireWire 400/800 audio interface designed for mobile recording. The unit has two XLR/TRS combo inputs with phantom powered mic preamps, with one offering Hi-Z for recording electric guitar or bass, plus two RCA inputs. The FA-66 delivers 4×4 performance at up to 24-bit/192kHz sound quality, or 6×6 simultaneous performance at up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

The FA-66 also features MIDI in/out ports, optical S/PDIF I/O, a built-in analog limiter and indicator, and FireWire bus power. Combining premium audio components and solid, compact construction with support for the latest operating systems on Mac or PC (Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7), the FA-66 is a must-have for a wide range of applications, from recording guitar or vocals in mobile or studio settings to connecting a mixer to a computer.

The FA-66 package also includes the Production Plus Pack, featuring SONAR 8.5 LE recording software (Windows only) and 3 high quality virtual instruments for Mac & PC: Rapture LE, Cakewalk Sound Center, and Studio Instruments Drums.

Availability

The FA-66 will be available in late April, 2010. Pricing is TBA.

  2. I have a cakewalk SPS 66 which is firewire 400. The marketing for the new cakewalk fa66 says firewire 400/800. However, the firewire sockets are exactly the same as on my one and they are apha sockets with 6 pin and 4 pin respectively. Firewire 800 uses beta sockets with nine pins and looks very different. I found out that 2 of the pins on the beta are for sheilding and the other is unused at present but it looks to me as if cakewalk might be being a tiny bit misleading and just adding in an adapter cable for firewire 800 therefore making it compatible. Anyone know the truth
I'm not an expert on firewire.

  4. In a way they are right. Any 400 firewire will run in an 800 firewire socket ONLY the top speed will only be 400. The 800 firewire is backward capable and you can use a slower 400 firewire item in the fast 800 firewire plug.
