      1. Ummm… I use Live on a daily basis for large projects, and it performs like a dream. In fact, I abuse it to no end. No crashes to speak of, whatsoever. Smooth as silk. Perhaps it's your machine?

      2. This poll may not include everyone's vote, but it is probably an accurate slice of what Musicians and Sound Designer are using and it reflects their love for ABLEton over other DAW's, especially after they see just how powerful and creative it is compared to whatever it was they used before. As for it crashing cperezzz , you may want to get a real licensed version!

      3. Yeah, but…

Why would Pro Tools users be reading about electronic music, when their DAW only added MIDI support with the last version?

Why would Garageband users be reading about vintage modular synths when their budgets still only stretch to the DAW that came with their OS?

      4. this poll is whack. of course a poll on this site is gonna favor aBUGton Live. Because Live users always are on here and not actually using Live right now because there DAW crashed.

      5. @ AJRussell – ProTools has had MIDI support for ages. Just not fully comprehensive support.
And I'm freakin' skint, but that doesn't stop my gear-lust ๐Ÿ˜‰

      11. AJRussell – Fair questions.

The poll is going to be biased towards people that are interested in the topics that Synthtopia covers.

But we do cover a broad range of topics and get over 250,000 unique visitors/month – so it's a useful poll if you understand it within that context.

      13. I do have a licensed version.
I have installed it on 2 different new macs and aBUGton always runs buggy on all of them.

So, I voted for REAPER because they constantly are adding and enhancing features all the time. REAPER just keeps getting better and better.

      14. the thing is the learning curve of live, its just pretty easy to learn and also deep enough to always discover something new…

other daws are pretty good, like protools wich is the standard industry or reaper wich is really good but you have to keep a lot of time learning how to use software instead of making music… also the max/msp make live ideal for other thing like interactive sound installations

      15. Yeah, I agree that the audience of synthtopia probably isn't an accurate representation of musicians/engineers & producers in general. If it were I would expect Protools and Logic to be much higher on the list.

However, when it comes to synthtopia readers, Ableton is the logical choice, i's fairly powerful and offers a lot of flexibility, not to mention its live performance aspects. Plus it seems to be one of the most popular for creators of electronic music.

      17. i voted for live because i have control over everything i want to have control over. its not for everyone though. if you dont like it i can see why. i have converted a few people to it by telling them only to run the demo compare it to what they are currently using and see if they like it better. i run it on my pc and on my mac. i will occasionally have problems with it on my pc but as far as i can tell its when the damn os is already struggling. its odd – i cant wrap my mind around fruity loops but live i have never had a problem with. to each their own. a more aptly title would be 'is ableton live the most preferable daw per synthtopia addicts.'

      19. Yeah sorry, synthhead, I didn't mean to diss Synthtopia. Your blog is awesome, if anything I wish there were more pages like this. I'm just saying the poll is hardly a accurate view of "the world". But this post inspired me to vote for my DAW of choice, Pro Tools.

In an unrelated matter, I'm surprised Renoise isn't Top 10, given Synthtopia's readership. It's the only one of the "new breed" of DAWs that I've really got my teeth into. If you work mainly with samples, either loops or hits, and you can get your head round the tracker interface, it's a seriously powerful little program. Some Renoisers need to represent!

      21. I took music tech 1 last semester and Logic just pissed me off at how the channel send knobs were these tiny little things. The interface is Live is just alot more uniform and having a completely seperate arrangement and session view that you can tab between is a dream. It's weird because live feels more like an mac application than logic does to me, but logic looks more like a mac app.

      24. So, the other night I was doing a gig with a drummer, lap steel player, and a horn guy. I was sending MIDI clock to the steel guy's effects, sending the drummer a separate headphone mix with a click, and treating the horns using effects plugins. Oh – and I was playing Absynth 4 synth parts and running loops programmed in Reason, all on a 4-year-old Macbook Pro running Ableton Live 8. Live makes doing all of those things, on the fly, really really simple. Live has its weird tics and flaws, and after using Pro Tools for years it's hard to get used to the behaviors of the Arrange view, but damn if don't make actually making music easier than any other software ever has.

      27. Err, clicking on the link for voting doesn't work for me.

Given the dynamic nature of the digital ecosphere, the quality of a software product is largely in the quality of its ongoing development. File a feature request or bug report and see how long it takes to get fixed — if at all. You aren't paying for access to a bunch of files with a bunch of zeroes and ones (that you could easily get from some torrent), you're paying for access to the developers' ears. So here's my vote: REAPER FTFW.

in Ableton Live, tracks can have only 1 MIDI channel (no, *really*??). No SysEx either. So, by deduction, there can hardly be any users of Ableton Live that use MIDI for advanced hardware instruments.

Live does not handle tablets decently. So, not only is it a fact that Ableton's basic QA sucks, it is also evident that over the course of 10 years, Live has had no users with a tablet (hello professionals?) that complain to Ableton, and/or Ableton is completely irresponsive to bug reports.

All in all, Live is clearly for people who want to "make" (read: play music and pretend to do something really creative each time a button is touched) music on a laptop with only one finger at a time, but who really suck at making music. It is *very* succesful in that respect.

      29. At first I didn't notice any polls at all; then I realized my NoScript plugin was blocking them ๐Ÿ˜‰

I voted Ableton as well. Live 8 is my main DAW in which I do about everything. I won't call it rock solid since it has a few issues here and there, but I found it easy to overcome those since those issues usually always focus around the use of vst's. (over here at least). And well; 8.1.2 is coming out anyway.

Although I also use some vst's every now and then I do most of my work with Live's native instruments. IMO stuff like Operator and Analog can really blow you away when being used properly.

Heck; that is also exactly what I love about Live. The user interface doesn't try to be all shiney in order to present some "state of the art" graphical impression of a synth. Instead they keep things simple, and rightfully so. Why waste precious CPU cycles on creating a high quality graphical interfaces while you could use those cycles on your music to get even more mastering power in it? Brilliant and very professional approach IMO.

The workflow is what sucked me in almost instantly. The session vs. arrangement views. Playing pieces clip by clip and so in the end collect enough material to setup an arrangement? Brilliant IMO. All too easy to get something going.

What I also really enjoy about Live is that it holds stuff for every kind of user. It keeps its interface, and everything which goes with it, simple. And that fools a lot of people who think that because of the simple interface the rest is probably also quite easily done. The classic "things which appear to be easy aren't always easy as well". Because down at the core it can pack quite a punch.

And well, now that we also have Max for Live I think things are really going to be spiced up since now you can practically do anything you want with Live. Even extend it with options which you think are useful.

But yeah; IMO NoScript and AdBlock+ are almost essential tools when surfing the web. Not just with regards to online ads and such, they also protect your setup from virii and other malicious stuff.

      32. Ok, as a known fact the IL/FruitlessLoops crowd has engaged their "social networking" BS to f..k the poll. Nothing wrong with this though, it just shows how utterly stupid and useless these polls are, just another way for yetanotherblog.com to gain clicks without actual content. The fact that this (and most other polls) doesn't prevent mutliple votes per IP effectively adds to the bad taste.

      36. i want to possibly do what i can to straighten this out a bit. this may take a *sec*.

i am a die-hard fan of ableton live as i run 8.1.1 with live for max on both my pcs and mac. i used to think it could do anything any other daw could but i have recently found things that even fruity loops can do that my beloved live cannot.

for whatever reason live 'works' better with windows xp than vista and even 7. many plugins i have simply refuse to show up in live + vista and even less work with live + 7 but asio works flawlessly. with xp every plugin i can throw at it has zero flaw at all but asio is rust compared to vista and 7. so it is a toss up and you really need to experiment with what might work for you when considering live. os x is sort of a give and take in every direction – whatever you can get to work in real time seems to pull from the latency of another. ?. i havent gotten it to work in os 9 or even tried 8 or 7.5 as that seems just nostalgically waxing.

as for any other daw i have experimented with (fruity loops, logic, cubase, reason, garageband) they have never had the latency give and take (after initial setup) or vst/au/dxi/etc… plugins that ableton needs.

i hope this helps at least a bit.

      39. cperezzz was kicked off the Live forum for constant trolling. So no surprise he is in here bad mouthing the software, Boo-hoo !

      40. At least it *WAS* a useful poll of Synthtopia's regular readership, now it's just a poll of FL fanboys which is only ever going to produce one result which is not interesting to anyone.

      42. Calm down, it's indeed only a pissing contest between Live, Reaper & FL (but who started, Live or Reaper?). To whoever thought that this poll was serious when it started, then why/how would Pro Tools, Cubase & Sonar have so few votes? Yes, that's because their users don't care, since the beginning. Live isn't gonna replace Pro Tools in studios any time soon, so you should have found it suspicious from the beginning.

      44. You have to be kidding. The Reaper guys started this, as far as I can see, Image-Line were responding to an earlier poll Reaper clearly rigged. So here Reaper was winning until the IL guys posted about this poll on their blog.

      45. we are all bs. i am a firm believer that the 'genuine' musicians play with heart minus controlled electronics ie paganini, claypool, vai and the like. electronic 'versions' of these guys exist but they lurk in the shadows as producers. there are those in between such as brian eno. i use live exclusively and absolutely hate fruity loops but i wont bash it based feelings. its just not for me. if someone can make amazing music with it i admire them because i cant do the same. bashing only bashes you but as we for now still have free speech i wont bash you for hating on my beloved ableton. people tend to show respect to those that show respect. peace.

      47. this poll is a massive win for everyone. the 'controversy' surrounding it is driving crazy amounts of traffic to the site racking up revenue via sites such as zzounds. more revenue equals continued coverage of all things i care about. +3.14

      49. Notice that Sony Acid Pro 7 doesn't even rate. Not surprised. I stupidly bought it and was happy with it for a while… but it is buggy. So I have to switch to Ableton live (no choice, Acid just hangs, even after clean reinstall! Sony tech support is helpful, but they can only do so much if the program itself is buggy. ) Unfortunately, that adds the wasted $200+ for Acid to the already astronomical price of Live.

      51. is funny to read some guys saying that synthopia audience is not pro, so you ppl are not pro ๐Ÿ˜›

anyway this hasn't a lot of sense, is like to do a contest of what is the best transport for humans, the answer depends on where you want to go.

I work and live on music since 20 years, I used Cubase since v1.0 on AtariST (year 90-91) going through many versions of Cubase, then some years of Logic till Apple buy it, then Nuendo, then Live, always working full time with them.

Today, for what I do that is electronic music, Live is the best choice, but if I have to do some more conventional work flow like producing a rock band or something like that, I think the option could be other, Probably Logic.

      52. fl studio is the best on the list. i've used all of them except garageband. fl is the easiest to use (yes, factually, not in my opinion; i can prove that fl can accomplish the same tasks with fewer clicks and in less movement of the mouse). fl studio does EVERYTHING, especially if you have the right VSTs. oh yeah, and everything looks way cooler in fl, less microsoft windowsy than the rest of DAWs.

      53. fl man, I would love to see you prove how FL Studio lets you do faster sample-accurate editing than Pro Tools (with mouse clicks? wtf are mouse clicks? keyboard shortcuts yo.), and how it looks less "microsoft windowsy" than Apple's Logic Studio.

      54. Best daw I've ever used? A radar system with a dedicated hardware midi sequencer, plus external converters and 2 receptors for vas and processing. Summing externally with thermionic line mixer. O and an iMac running live for the goofy shit, with a rosetta 200… It lives in my basement studio….

      55. Huh, I run Acid Pro 7 on an old AMD 2.8 processor and I forget how much RAM – 2GB maybe? Only issue was raising the buffer in my ASIO driver. Other than that it's been fine. I would love to try Ableton or something else, but money has already been spent.

      56. oowww please, u say that guys like trentemoller,deadmau5 and Sebastien eLeger are really sucks at making music??? u just have a grudge againts ableton for some reason. No DAW sucks, maybe FL Studio lol. but. Ableton might not be the cleanest but its very flexible and powerfull.

      57. I love Cubase 5 it is clear and uncluttered everything makes sense, LIVE is ok it's fiddly and nothing seems to be in a sensible place plus the work space is far too small…… I have used Reason 5 as well which is ok but again very cluttered……. Cubase all the way for me!

      58. These polls are ridiculous!!!

Little wayne is popular to… maybe we should all go out and buy his BS…

"when sales control stats i place no faith in the majority"

        lp

btw software doesn't make good music…People do!

      59. How the hell can Ableton be the best daw on the market if they can’t respond to the costumers needs.. I record myself remotely and there is a 2 step (Click Arm Track then press the Record Button….WTF!!!!) recording process as the software is out of the box..

I don’t like the way the software steps away from the simple things that all of the other DAW’s like Presonus, Logic, and yes even Cubase have standard out of box…

There is a reason why it is standard… because they take away from the frustration of tangoing with the software and more time making good music!!

For the 15,000th Time AUTO TRACK ARMING is every self producing musician’s friend!!!!!!!!!!! then maybe ill by this POS!!!!

BTW Nice sound browser and cool remix features ๐Ÿ˜› but Presonus is seriously the best…your fault if you fail!!!! Check my credentials if you will..you’ll find that we are serious about our production and work ethic ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. I am sure you are right… I’m probably an amateur and you are probably a star…. where did I go wrong LOL!!! Enjoy your many successful works bud!!! U-Jean ๐Ÿ™‚

        2. What DAW doesn’t require you to arm a track before you record? Also, why would you want that? I mean if you only record one thing at a time, becuase you do all the things, I’d understand that. But if you are doing a multitrack recording wouldn’t you want to select all tracks first then record, rather than just having each track starting at different spots as you click tracks 2,3,4 etc. then get everyone on cue. That sounds like there would be tons of snipping to be done. Ableton is pretty good, especially alone. You arm the track, pick up the instrument, click record and you have a bar count or whatever you set it to, to get ready. Of course if you don’t like that, that’s your preference. You could also just set the same midi/key control to trigger both arm and record of a track (tried it just now and it works.)

      60. Should’ve made the list :-/ …. S1 is the best at the moment in my opinion… Ableton lacks in many ways to the self recording producer, the idea guy and the guy who comes up with a top liner in the middle of the air port on the way to the next show. I don’t have to prove anything.. no need for a pissing contest… The proof is there… U-Jean The Bed Room Dweller LOL!!!

        1. Hey It’s me the Bedroom dweller… Where can I hear your most successful works??? I will take a no reply as the answer that you have none worthy of mentioning.. However if I like what I hear than you might be useful. U-Jean ๐Ÿ˜€

      61. I used Live for awhile after Orion ceased further production, but since switched to Reaper and like it better for several reasons, First because it is far more customizable, both aesthetically as well as window layout. But more importantly, the sound engine is better. Live sounds thinner in comparison. Also, I prefer the simplicity of working directly with midi/wave in a single window, rather than having to switch back and forth between the two. However, Live does have better sequencing ability, similar to that of Orion.
