Image Line Software “Social Engineers” Our DAW Poll & Buries Ableton Live

Remember that DAW poll we mentioned the other day?

The one where Ableton Live was blowing all other DAW’s out of the water?

That post seemed to have generated a lot of attention.

Especially from FL Studio fans – who’ve responded by pushing Image Line‘s own DAW to the top.

It may have helped that Image Line did a little social engineering on Twitter:

social-engineering-fl-studio-hack

And they asked their 20,000 fans on Facebook to help rig the results:

fl-studio-pwns-synthtopia

We reconfigured the poll to ban multiple votes from the same IP address. This has the potential to cause problems for some users, but should minimize multiple votes from the same user.

No hard feelings to Image Line – they’re just trying to bury the competition.

But – given that Image Line has had a bit of fun with us and that the 2010 Synthtopia DAW Poll may reflect a bit of an FL Studio bias as a result….we would not be too surprised or shocked if other DAW makers and users decided to respond with a DAW-poll death-blow. Hya!

  1. Dude, i’ll never support a DAW that is being used by crappy Eurodance musicians.

Seriously, would you choose a DAW that is being used by Cascada & Basshunter(FLStudio), or would you choose a DAW that is being used buy the likes of Deadmau5, Felix Da Housecat & John Dahlback(Ableton live)?

    1. Deadmau5 has had an interview on an FL Studio forum… he uses Fl Studios… get your facts srtaight before you post a silly un-investigated post.

    2. tell me you are kidding?

Eurodance musician now use Live more than FL Studio and Hiphoper still with FL Studio get your facts straight . and Cascada procuder is Manian and never he uses FL Studio. Deamau5 is FL user check out the FL website.

    3. What a ridiculous statement. Can you actually make a well reasoned argument that Deadmau5 is somehow more artistically valid then Cascada? I hate Cascada too but the suggestion using FL automatically makes one's music less valid is mornonic. I'm sure you can find examples of producers using FL is some way from all forms of electronic. I've talked to talented people using FL for Breakcore, IDM, DNB, breaks, etc. Your tools are irrelevant.

    5. Wow you don't think crappy eurodance musicians use Logic, Pro Tools, Live, or any other DAW? Please sell your computer.

  2. FL Studio has over 300,000 registered users and 20,000 demo downloads a day, so it's can't be all that far off the top spot really.

  4. The poll doesn’t show all the problems FL Studio has.
    1. No auto PDC
    2. Lifetime of only 32bit.
    3. Lifetime of 4 megs of RAM limitation.
    4. Mixer architecture that doesn’t allow for simple midi control.
    5. Limited audio compilation due to use of 3rd party editing/capture utility (Edison)
    6. Basic out of the box synthesizers lack professionalism.
    7. Basic out of the box FXs are second rate and embodies metallic residue.
    8. Lifetime free updates gets minimal attention (lack of innovation)
    9. Poorly run company by ignorant and arrogant employees.
10.Not worth $199 when you can get Reaper for $60.

    1. 1. FL Studio 10 will have this one
      2. Where did you get that news?
      3. wait you mean playstation1 compatible?? thank god
      4. its so simple I can just right click then move a knob done.
      5. read the manual
      6. looks normal to me?
      7. your skill sucks that is why… practice and enjoy
      8. better than too much.
      9. busy on life
      10. Reaper has lack of usefull synth if you compare to FL Studio plugins.

    2. Gol…. cute… you obviously use the FL Studio forums to know Gol is one of their head programmers… real cute…

  5. 300,000 over a 12 year period really isn't that much. Not to mention how many of them actually stuck around even after receiving the lifetime free updates. I'm sure most have moved onto bigger and better things. There are just too many better DAWs out there for less money and better value. They have either moved onto 64 bit or plan to in the future. FL Studio being limited to Delphi a 32 bit operating system shows it's age and stunts it's growth. 20,000 demos a day seems to be inflated, but how many actually register. Image-Line has been screaming that 300,000 number for a year now, so I'm guessing not many. FL Studio has the biggest pirating community, which falls along side the requirements of getting "my first DAW" syndrome and never getting any better.

  6. FL is the Kia sedan of the DAW world.
    Ableton is the Hyundai hatchback.
    Cubase is the Chevy Malibu.
ProTools is the Ford 150 truck.
Logic Pro is the Porsche (complete with its own personal mechanic).

Anything other DAW is an Edsel.

  7. Synthtopia you got it wrong. Fruityloops were trying to bury Reaper not Live, or didn't you notice them rigging the vote?

  9. Im sorry but there have been several articles on this by respected musicians concerning DAWs. If one Daw sounds different to another it is either because the hardware is different or that the sound has not been configured the same way IE, effects, EQ and so on. The main difference between any DAW is the interface and how the individual likes working also the reliability and support. If you can't get a pro sound out of FL Studio that is equal to ableton, or pro logic then you are not doing it right. Go back and learn properly. FL Studio is a brilliant tool with a lot of support and where it beats a lot of others hands down for me is the lifetime free upgrade. Basically it is accessible to all users at all levels.

  11. I honestly feel polls like this are pointless. Do you really expect anyone to believe that everyone who has voted has used every single one of those programs in every scenario possible, therefore qualifying them to make the call of which one is the "best"?

It's just a popularity contest, to which I say, "meh."

  13. Wow, after reading this article, I get the impression that the author is the type who wears a tinfoil hat. The two things mentioned here are circumstantial at best, and if IL spreads the word to get people voting, what's wrong with that? Instead, why aren't the other DAW companies doing the same thing? 😉

  15. People dissin' FL can simply admit that it's not right for them, but could be for someone else! Or, put up something more useful. Supplementally, helps to point out what you like about another DAW in case someone is curious about making a transition and finds their newfound DAW to be even right-er, however. LET'S NOT GET INTO ANOTHER ANALOGUE SUMMING WAR PEOPLE. (Please.)

    OK.

But, eh, it was unwise for Image Line to position this as "rigging", which implies dishonesty as opposed to earnest enthusiasm for their product.

HUR HUR HUR, THIS IS FUNNEH. I'm surprised Ableton hasn't been more vigilant about this — they have some decent marketing chops!

And I voted for Live because among many other things, I like how good the workflow makes me feel. I haven't experienced that fascination with other DAWs.

  17. ey man stop talkin shit!

abeton live is the best programme.

deadmau5 uses it, felix da housecat, ski beatz, armand van helden… etc, etc.
i'm a live user and i have to say that live is 1000 times better than any other DAW because i've been more creative with this software!

deadmau5 uses FL studio? NOO!! NEVER! he used to use deckadance by image line for his performances, but now he uses also LIVE on stage!

for me, ableton live is the bentley under all the DAW, pro tools the mercedes, logic the peugeut and FL the Suzuki or something.

with FL you can just produce some crappy youtube-beats, look at deadmau5' music, the sound is so fucking perfekt.

now all the FL users should get the hell out of here because they haven't got an idea about producing, engineering and recording.

  20. I don't care which software is the most popular, most powerful, or which superstar uses what. I only care about what works best for me. And it ain't FL. Or Live.

  22. Nobody even mentioned the fact here that Ableton Live is available on Apple machines which are the de facto choice for professional musicians. Not only are the big time guys mentioned above , and add to this a whole creed such as Chris Lake, Tocadisco, D. Ramirez etc., using it bit demonstrating its powerful tools in a whole bunch of fantastic tutorials. I've never seen anything even close it on FL !!! Not to mention the Rewire-compatiblity of Ableton, which allows you to link is seamlessly to either Logic or Pro Tools which may have advanced mixing features for the finishing touch.

  24. 1. wrong, semi-pdc, you still have a lot of manual settings.
    2. from the developers @ image-line. even if the delphi language supports 64 bits, it will take them 5 years to convert and compile (according to IL). And they already said they have 0 plans to convert even if it does support 64 bits. Do your homework.
    3. 4 mb limitation is a big deal to real producers.
    4. it's not simple, it's another "work around". it's not setup to be easily changed. and according the the developers it's architecture can't be change unless completely rewritten, which they have 0 plans to do. Do your homework.
    5. doesn't come with professional audio comping tools. reading the manual won't help.
    6. looks normal? because you aren't used to out of the box synths that are worth anything. try reason.
    7. my skill has nothing to do with the sound of their out of the box tools.
    8. too much attention to innovation is a bad thing? Wow you are stretching.
    9. Busy on life? Now that's a good one. What does their life have to do with running a business properly? A talented staff knows how to balance both.
10.Everyone gets 3rd party synths anyways. And FL Studio doesn't offer anything useful as their out of the box synths. They just recently had to try and boost them up with the XXL free upgrade scheme earlier, which still is lack luster. Do your homework.

  26. All you people that are complaining are fools and have lost touch with what music really is…..its a Art!! not a technical aspect or B.S. of the sort . If Beethoven would have composed his songs on cheap piano would that have taken away from what he wrote?? People get so caught up in these discussion that its time away from making music. We all have different preference due to different influential background, so what one likes might not be good for another and what works for one will not always for another.Ask yourself , at the end of the day its the song that matters Right??? its the song that will bring you fame or money …Right??? so who gives a flying F@#k what D.A.W. you used to compose it if its good its good!!
For all those of you that keep using cars as a analogie , keep this in mind whether you use a prius or a veyron it will bring you from point A to point B . Its the driver behind the wheel that controls everything ……not the car…..get it ?? 😉
Good luck to all in your future music endeavors!!

1: NOT semi but almost Auto if you can read the thread again.
2: NO ONE needs a 64bit in this time around , what? you want to lose your old VST plugins like early made 2.1v and below?? looks around the plan again take note even I use windows 7 I dont even get the full 64bit on Live , Cubase ,Reason. so think again fool.
3: now if you know that its a joke yes it is a joke FL Studio 10 will support more than 4gigs of ram utilizing the wrapper to use 64bit address ram. so 1 VST can use 4GB max based on 32bit, read again and again do your home work .
4: if you are only thinking on the mixer then guest what , ever DAW has their weakness on mixer.
5: like you said on your comment 10 , every one get a 3rd party if it doesnt do the job for you, same as Cubase , Live , Reaper and so on so get your facts right.
6: I already have reason and I love it that is why there is a so called "COMBINATION" fool if you make music learn how to deal with your limitation and not to sue what you are using.
7: your skills just sucks dicks and dont forget to by Vulva and get a life or a wife , that is why you are here in this website bashing anything….. so take a look again.
8: simple is the best so what?
9: if you are so talented like them why are you here commenting here instead of making music getting more attention outside? am I right? you're not like them and not even like you doing a life like you do right now. so give them a time fool.

  30. #300,000 over a 12 year period really isn't that much.
not all of human has the skills to be musician.

#There are just too many better DAWs out there for less money and better value
Sonar $$500-800 Cubase takes $500-1000 , Live $500 , Reason $400 , Logic Pro $1000 , FL Studio $99-400 , Pro Tools $500-700 , Reaper $60 tell me how many BETTER DAW is less cheaper?

#They have either moved onto 64 bit or plan to in the future.
even games doesnt move to 64bit. try to play crysis and see if it really utilize 64bit. I mean come on… that game still use 600megs of rams,,,,,

and in music it only maxed out if you are a noob who use samples too much….

#FL Studio being limited to Delphi a 32 bit operating system shows it's age and stunts it's growth.

32bit will not go away untill everything is utilizing to 64bit even your anti-virus , if you know how long windows takes to just move on to another generation………. unlike mac.

#FL Studio has the biggest pirating community
if you ask the real music scene , Cubase and Reaper has the biggest right now

  32. re: 64 bit.

Not a massive problem. Running FL on 64 bit Win 7 with 8 gig of memory.

Use jBridge to bridge to 64 bit versions of Omnisphere, RMX and Trilan .. each vsti instance then runs in their seperate memory space and doesn't take any away from the FL memory space.

Have tested this using 7 gig+ of big Omni patches – it's not a problem, FL handles it all very well.

    jBridge is £15.

  34. Here's my opinion if you want the honest-to-God's truth!

    1. FL Studio is great for quickly marking down ideas, i.e. like an idea scratchpad. I've also created full productions within it such as the one you can hear at my soundcloud. It's easy to do such tracks in FL Studio, and this is why it's my number one. Besides, the synths it comes with for $199 are pretty nice and with lifetime free upgrades, you really can't go wrong (unless you own a Mac).

    2. Reaper is a fantastic full production DAW and has many more options and flexibilities from FL Studio. If I want to, say, make a complicated beat and then change the time signature, I can do so easily. At $60, it's quite a nice price. Even at $225 for a big-time license, it's good. Plus, you get one free big-number upgrade (i.e., purchase Reaper 3.35, get up to 4.99 free and everything in between). Cross-platform!

    3. Live is a godsend when you need a good DAW for live usage. The time stretching capabilities are just win! The downside is its expensive price tag. $599 is horrendous even on a medium budget. Live Lite is great, but is basically a crippled version. Despite these downfalls, nothing can do what Live can do! Another cross-platform.

    4. Reason is an effects rack and instrument, not really a DAW per se (though one can make full productions within it). I think Reason is also cross-platform.

This basically sums it for me.

  36. The whole loop matrix thingy is getting pretty stale already. No wonder the whole industry is launching Live controllers like crazy, this is becoming the 21st century equivalent of the Auto Rythm home keyboard of the 80's , only that the kids do not even play one finger chords now. This is a toy, load some downloaded loops and there you go. Once you take out all the gimmicks and go down to the music making thing, as in recording real instruments and vocals, and even syncing hardware synths, Live, Fruity Loops and thing like these are mediochre apps when compared to the established sequencers like PT, Logic, DP, Sonar and Cubendo. Of course you can make music with them, but you can also do that with a Nintendo DS

So link us to some of your tracks you made with whatever tool you chose?

The tool is irrelevant anyway, all DAWs today can pretty much do the same thing. Indeed, look what this guy did on his iPhone for crying out loud…

That you complain about those imagined (and often wrong) limitations in FL Studio shows what a lack of talent you must have.

  40. Hi,

DeadMau5 has been using FL Studio almost since its first incarnation and
most (if not all) of his songs & loops started their life as FL Studio projects.

He even lived in our offices for almost a year. Here he is with Gol @ MusicMesse :

    http://belgiandownloads.image-line.com/jmc/GolWit

After that he then takes his stuff live on stage using a tool (Live in this case) that's made for that purpose.

I hope none of you believe the sculpture below was created with that forklift 😕

  47. "on Apple machines which are the de facto choice for professional musicians"

??? Not in the last 4 studios I was in. Sure they had macs laying about but all the real work was being done on PCs.

  48. i agree that the bashing is counterproductive. its the same atmosphere as different crowds clashing at a concert fighting over which band is best. tiesto uses ableton, basshunter uses fl, tpain uses garageband and i seriously doubt they fight over which daw is best. you are right about the workflow being important also. i use live and it for me is much quicker to get my thoughts down than other daws i have used. our differences make us human.

  49. Lifetime updates of what? Free old VSTs that should have been included in the first place? Or are you talking about the minimal changes that come with every version? How about all those requested features that are meet with an excuse or work around? Possibly it's the fact that their plugins, no matter what quality you think they are, will always be limited to 32 bit operation? Or perhaps being stuck with a 4mb ram ceiling? I guess if you enjoy using a program that started 12 years ago and continues to use the same archaic programming language, that is your choice. Seeing as the Delphi language is incompatible and nonexistent on Macs, and has only plans to move to a 64 bit architecture. And don't forget that it would take 3-5 years to convert, upgrade and compile the millions of line of code, according to the developer. And he has 0 plans to go 64 bit. That is only one of the short falls, short comings and limitations that come with this outdated and not worth the $199 piece of software. Maybe if they spent less time pumping out mediocre $9 plugins, they could spent it improving the thing that keeps their current users happy and brings in new users due to comparison and feature lists. So many early designs within FL Studio's architecture have lead to the need for so many workarounds and limitations. Why do they continue to ignore these problems? Make excuses, give workarounds or convince people that don't really want or need those features. An Artist is only as good as his tools. I'm sure Michelangelo had the best brushes and paints that money could buy. You won't see too many sculptures being carved with a shovel either. Not providing useful and necessary tools that make things better, faster and more intuitive from a more professional direction. Otherwise you can expect a lifetime of that "fruity" reputation it comes with. Maybe it's time to shed it's skin, and that includes that baby's first poop green color scheme.

  50. You are wrong, he's still using it. I know Joel (Deadmau5).

Anyway, it's quite common for people to switch/move between several DAWs over time. Most commonly when they get sick of being hit for upgrade costs. You can't beat FL Studio's lifetime free updates.

You have too much time to criticise Mr gol.

I use Fruityloops for 5 years now and is a very good program and gets better each year.

  60. yeah maybe max should write a new modular daw that can be played live. work in collaboration with gol. after sending gol to night school to learn c++. shouldn't take him long since they probably have a lot of similarities. and then allow fl studio to be run inside this new 64 bit host as a vst. shouldn't be that hard with all that framework and experience there. time and effort is all it takes and seems the logical step.

  62. That's a forum post you retard, not a twitterbullshit.com fart flying out to all retarded offspring of a FL crackpot and their caretakers. If there are no forum posts at the DUC or Cubase.net mentioning that poll, it tells you more about these products than anything else doesnt it? Take your medication.

Unike this stupid poll, the MR poll was accessible to registered users only, and every stupid fanboy in the stupid DAW world had an equal change to mobilize everyone being a registered MR reader and a probably a few extremely delusional guys who registered there just for that, they all did and there was no more "social engineering" involved. And I'm happy the FL guys did that, it just shows how stupid and useless these polls are, take 10 polls and you get 10 different winners.

  67. Hi Cho,

Thanks for the support but for some people the glass will always be half empty.

We have seen our +300.000 customer base grow with 10.000s of satisfied customers every year and judging from the almost 5000 people that decided to pay between $13 & $120 for Drumaxx in less than a month one might wonder who/what's mediocre here 😕

    Regards,

  69. Hi,

We have a lot more coming from Maxx in the future. Please stay tuned and you might be surprised how well your crystal ball works 🙂

FL10 will be able to bridge 64-bit plugins so each of them will have there own (virtually) unlimited memory space to work in.

    Regards,

  70. sounds like a great start, but there's a long way to go. playing catchup isn't the best of positions to be in at this time.

  71. I am confused. Fruityloops is not limiting. I can record singing, guitar and it has VST synthesizers and effects. It is a great program. I tried to use Reason and it has no VST and no audio recording but they make you pay $200 to add audio recording. That is limiting.

Each year Image Line is giving me a new Fruityloops that is always better than the last. I have not this good experience with other software companies.

What program do you say is better?

  75. cho,

not sure why you assume anger, it's just the true disappointing facts and limitations that FL Studio carries with it.

as for your numbers growing… due to more people making music, perhaps. as for increasing interest in a feature for feature competitor, then no. it seems pretty obvious that the future only holds higher and higher precision to our tools. it's sad that you're too busy defending what you have, instead of working with your user base and making it the best it could be. it's sad that a company like yours, in the position you are in, shrug off useful, desired and some times necessary tools to be added.

remember the arm wrestling match between the need of sidechain compression? Looks like you guys are finally making attempts at giving users options to use a larger mixer. That only took years until the developer caved and gave people those types of options.

i could continue on and on about several things through my perspective, but just as a customer since version 3, i'm sure you won't be listening anyways.

  79. I do everything in Record/Reason that I can because it functions well and fast and doesn't typically crash. I use Ableton for anything beyond the Props capabilities and for remixing/ sound mangling. I never even open Pro Tools and generally think it no longer offers much beyond specific applications.

DAW Wars are dumb- regardless of what I prefer or anyone else uses. If I was doing the same work in FL studio and getting paid no actual client would care. A poor craftsman blames his tools- A bored and uninspired craftsman debates endlessly about whether or not his tools are "THE BEST."

  81. Right on. To be honest I thought Reason wasn't quite up to the task by itself, but since adding Record it can do everything I want, quickly and easily. I still don't consider Reason + Record to be a direct competitor to all these other "Swiss Army" DAWS…it's more like an alternative to the DAW scene. And I love it.

  83. At point blank school the Logic courses are the most popular at the moment, closely followed by Ableton, although we don't offer any in FL or Pro Tools. Demand for Cubase and Reason has really dropped off in the past year.

  85. Well if he replied with the DAW he used then he would have to face up to criticism of his own DAW. But he won't he's a coward.

All DAWs have weaknesses. But all DAWs today allow you to do whatever you need really. I don't get people who complain about them, especially ones they have chosen not to use.

  87. A few good points seem to have been made here and of course the usual interweb folly.

I'll say this: The first album I did when learning FL studio started off poorly until I really began "gettin it" conceptually. (I love pattern based recording! ) Then I wrote some dense and polished tracks where due to FL's excellent automation routines was sonically interesting. Its main shortcoming wasn't sound or processing power, its that it can't be run under Mac os x. If crashes are killing your creativity like they were mine, bite the bullet and get Logic Studio. Currently I run a g5 2.0 dp with 5 gigs of ram and it is amazingly stable and it along with my motu system( 1296, 308, 2412) interfaces the various preamps, hardware compressors, and EQ's, amps, hardware amp sims and hardware synths really elegantly. It is also a breeze to use. Those were important factors to me. I write songs and produce, I don't play productions live, I play guitar and a few other instruments where we have four people on stage and the two are different worlds to me, I've seen deadmau5 live and its awesome but so is simple three chord rock live. Now I have buddies that use Ableton in a live setting and they are doing some really cool stuff with it -but as solo artists. Its a big distinction. Its all about goals and priorities just like most of life, get the one that works the way YOU work, try the demos.

I have tried Reaper -not as fast an interface as logic and it crashes, but for sixty bucks? What a deal.
Cubase- on Atari, (I've been doing this for a while…) PC and Mac it has been less than ideal for me. Sync issues, crashes and poor support from Steinberg.
Pro tools HD is freakin Amazing!! Rock solid and a trained pro on that system is fast like no one else, its also so out of my budget that I'll probably never use it unless I have a label project I'm working on, LE or mbox? Kind of like any lite software… uninspired and part of a marketing plan. BUT, if you are going to take your project to a studio, use it. The Engineer was probably trained on pro tools so he or she will have you in and out of the studio in no time flat and you'll have a polished project.
Adobe audition has some excellent tools in it and I'll be using it when I get a Mac Pro as it does an excellent job of mastering.
Digital Performer, Tracktion and the reason/ record/ recycle trilogy I have never used. I'd be interested in why others like or dislike those DAWs.
Sonar is another good one as is Samplitude and when i was only using a pc I used them both I liked the V vocal plugin on sonar 7 but the interface was a clunker on the plug in and in Sonar in general, things were just hard to find and i spent most of my time reading the manuals and asking questions on forums.
My ideal is a pattern based DAW like fruity, with Logic like stability and the mastering capabilities of Audition.
