Rock Band 3 Gets A MIDI Keytar!

Check out this preview of Rock Band 3 – and the new keytar action!

They don’t call the new keyboard a keytar – but if it looks like a keytar and smells like a keytar…..

In play, green, red, blue, yellow or orange keys flow on a “stream” representing the notes to be played on five corresponding keyboard keys. In a new “Pro” mode, though, all 25 keys are used; the streams shifts left and right to cover the correct keys.

In an interesting twist, the keyboard will also work as a MIDI control keyboard that can be connected to a computer.

“This is a real instrument,” according to senior designer Sylvain Dubrofsky.

This could make Rock Band a lot more interesting for keyboard players. Check it out and let me know what you think!

More details below.

Also due for the game’s release are two advanced guitar controllers that take advantage of the Pro mode, one a full-sized, fully functional Fender guitar.

Other Rock Band 3 advances: improved animations, refined gameplay features — players can drop in and out of games, or change instruments and difficulty settings on the fly without stopping songs — and a easier-to-use song menu.

  1. This is very cool. I enjoyed the previous 'guitar-based 'hero/band' titles but as a musician I always felt that I am fooling myself into using what is clearly just a 'button controller' with the buttons spread out in a manner that just 'so happens' to resemble a guitar. At least with the drumkit one started approaching something that was 'pseudo-real' and now with this in 'Pro' mode we are getting close. Having the additional 'MIDI Out' added in means that I am DEFINATELY going to purchase this.
