Making A Sequence With A Modular Step Sequencer

Martin Peters demonstrates step sequencing with a Doepfer MAQ16/3 & a Synthesizers.com Q60 step sequencer.

The video starts off pretty slow, but by the second section, below, Peters develops some interesting Berlin School style hypnotic sequences.

This is an attempt to try to show you how a sequence can be made. I found out making an instruction video is not that easy but I just wanted to share this with you. After making the video I noticed my voice was a bit soft so I tried to emphasis it with a little EQing; hope you can understand what I am saying. I did not want to redo the video because it wouldn’t be improvised anymore and I think the sequence worked out quite well. Making sequences is not an exact science so this is just an example and I do not always do it as shown. And I am not an expert in sequencing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is part 1 of a 2 part video.

  1. The kind of Berlin School sequencing is the reason why I want a hardware step sequencer after all. But I'm not sure whether I should buy one or just go ahead and build it myself because building a sequencer is actually pretty easy, just a lot of mostly boring work. Still have this Doepfer sequencer DIY book on the shelf (describes pretty much how to build a MAQ 16/3) although it's not so much use.

  2. Hi Martin, can you tell us what delay/echo you are using on this sequence. Hardware or software?
I tried reproducing your sequence, just a a learning exercise – the hardest thing was recreating the delay on the first home-built synth sequence. I tried various delays (all vst plugins), but just couldn't get that great delay sound which gives the sequence such forward momentum. What's your secret?
