Epic Octatrack Performance Sampler Teaser

This video is an epic dystopian future teaser for Elektron’s new Octatrack performance sampler:

The Octatrack DPS-1 is an 8 track dynamic performance sampler. The Octatrack is ideal for radical audio processing and performance oriented sampling. Every track features real-time pitch scaling & time stretch and the next generation Elektron step sequencer has been designed with maximum usability and efficiency in mind.

All music in the film was made with an Octatrack.

  1. Hah, a sampler for "new school musicians" what bollocks. It's nearly 2011 and Elektron are releasing a sampler that cannot even play samples chromatically via a MIDI keyboard!

At least it's obvious where all that profit went to from their massively overpriced Sid Stations and Machine Drums. Not that I'm saying they weren't worth it, or the hardware is worthless – quite the opposite – but in the case of the Octotrack especially, the phrase "emperor's new clothes" springs to mind.

  7. If you want a sampler with keys, there's the Nord Wave and the Waldorf Blofeld. The application for this critter is very different. Think SP-1200 or MPC – that's the lineage for this device. Manipulating samples in a non-chromatic mapping. The Octotrack is for people who want Ableton Live-esque capabilities without having a laptop on stage.

  13. Nice to see where all the profit from Elektron's ludicrously overpriced gear is going, I suppose.

Hate to be the skeptic, but I really would have liked to see more of how this thing actually operates rather than some 7-minute Blade Runner knockoff.

  19. Its hard to justify the price IMO. For that kind of money I could get Maschine instead and do exactly what that does and then some. It wouldn't be a self contained solution but at les than half the price, I'm sure I can live with that.

Then go have a look at the product page on the Elektron site. They have been posting specs and features for several weeks.

  26. I understand that, but I am of the firm belief that for a serious musician, a couple of demonstration videos showing off exactly what the unit is capable of would be far more of a selling point than a glitzy, high-budget PR flick.

For a machine that is supposed to excel at enabling users to compose and sequence live, they sure have been reluctant to demonstrate its capabilities in a live setting. For this sort of thing IMHO audio demos and text descriptions really don't cut it.

  32. "…a couple of demonstration videos showing off exactly what the unit is capable of would be far more of a selling point than a glitzy, high-budget PR flick."

There are many such videos of the unit in action from last years NAMM show. Others besides. Perhaps a cursory search on YouTube? Why the negative attitude dude? Nobody is requiring that you buy one. What, do you work for Akai and are afraid it will bite into MPC sales or something?

  33. "Perhaps a cursory search on YouTube?"

All the Youtube videos feature terrible sound quality and apart from all but one of them do little to showcase what the thing actually does beyond the blatantly obvious.

"Why the negative attitude dude? Nobody is requiring that you buy one. What, do you work for Akai and are afraid it will bite into MPC sales or something?"

Yeah because giving criticism as to how Elektron could better sell me their product obviously means I am trying to undermine their PR efforts. Derp.
As a matter of fact, I like the idea of the Octatrack very much, and the fact that nobody is forcing me to buy one is exactly my point! They're going to have a hard time selling me something that costs considerably more than my average monthly wage-packet when I don't even know how well the thing bloody works!

For instance, compare what Elektron are doing to the videos Native Instruments have been using to promote Maschine for the last two years or so: They are concise, technically informative, appealing to the average user, and the 'artist series' really sell the product by having some extremely talented musicians perform on one. These things make me want the product because they demonstrate it well. Simple.
