Flutronix – Our New Favorite Electroacoustic Flute Music Supergroup

Reader Geoffrey sends word, via the Submit A Story page, about Flutronix –  a Brooklyn-based electro-acoustic flute duo.

Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull, above, make up Flutronix. Their original compositions mix popular, experimental, and contemporary classical music, while using electronics and digital effects. In addition, their repertoire includes Crumb, Reich & Radiohead and they claim Terry Riley and Aphex Twin as influences.

They’re our new favorite electroacoustic flute music supergroup.

“These ladies have some serious skills,” notes Goeffrey. Preview their music below and let us know what you think!

  1. I think they're overdoing it BIG time. When listening to their first song "crazy" I hear lots of bass lead sounds. And then suddenly some flutes come "barching in". No offense but it sounds horrible in my opinion. No; not the flute playing nor the bass sounds but the mixture itself..

When I hear those flutes I agree that it sounds pretty nice.. BUT the very moment I try to concentrate on the flute sounds the (at that time) ugly repetitive bass sounds pop up again which in my opinion totally kills the atmosphere.

I can't concentrate on the bass nor on the flutes. And i get the impression that this is the intention which, well, isn't my style. I want to /hear/ music and be able to concentrate on it.

  7. Electro-acoustic??
In what way? Not commenting on the quality of the music but what makes this electro-acoustic?
Of course they use both electronic and acoustic instruments but the genre "electro-acoustic" is something completly different. No?

  8. Good question.

Flutronix uses the term to describe what they do.

It's probably as good a category as any for what they do, given that their music combines live instrumental performance with electronics and looping. You can also hear the influence of the electroacoustic works of Reich and Riley.

Are you thinking more of acousmatic music or music in the musique concrète tradition?
