This Music Video May Make You Want To Beat Up Hipsters

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We cover all the cool iPad music software and suddenly half of our readers think that we should rename the siteย FanboyTopia.

We’ve never quite understood the gut level rejection that some of our readers have towards mobile music apps.

But, after about 5 seconds of watching the North Point iBand performing their mobile-device filled, T-Pain’d cover of Bon Jovi’s Living On A Prayer, we think we may finally understand.

The North Point iBand rocks iGog, Bassist, Guitarist, iShred, I Am TPain and NLog Synth.

  1. The problem is the repetition of musical software history . We've been there saw it don't need to fund it again until they milk as dry for child applications. You think its the new el dorado…

  2. Hey! I just bought a Yamaha CS-80 from a guy that played keyboards on the original Bon Jovi record! How’s that for slamming it to the fanboys?! (Well, he DID use a tuning app on his iPhone to show me how all the VCOs were still in tune…) Hmm…

  3. Hey, this band would not have been better if they had used original analogue equipment. Do not confuse the instruments with the people and music made on it. You certainly do not make any better music if you are using an original Moog/Arp/Korg/Roland or whatever from 1777 which was owned by Mozart. There are probably zillions of youtube vids where people doing even worse music with nice analogue instruments. Maybe the search for old analogue instruments which has been played by xyz is equally a surrogate for providing own personal input. 'Synth porn' is a funny way to call it, but there is some truth in it. It is porn, not reality, even more than the iPad stuff.

Better focus on what you like, why it is good, be it instruments (analogue or digital) or musicians.

  4. I think the point is not that the musician and the quality of their work matter above all else, but that videos of people using relatively new mobile hardware and even newer software are somehow more exciting to a few people than the host of bad videos demonstrating more old-fashioned products even if they are brand new (BTW, where's the news item about the Flame Talking Synth Euro module which is a very handy repackaging of the original FTS as a Euro module, no touchscreen though *g*).

Bottom line: If this site would focus on modular stuff many people would probably complain (albeit I'd guess more quietly, but who knows?) that they don't own a modular, never will and think it's ridiculous that someone would pay money for a bulky mess of electronic components that produces nothing that their latest iPad applications could not do and better/cheaper/faster/harder and so on. Until the day they have foldable piano style keyboards and inflatable keyboard amplifiers and pedals fo finally fulfill the keyboardist's dream of real mobility I'll continue to be very sceptical about this so-called mobile music making.

  5. Novelty at it's finest. The recycling, been there done that concept mentioned above has always been and continues to be with the onslaught of "reality" TV, games like Rock Band/ Guitar Hero etc. keeping most of the popular entertainment and what any possibility of original material might be heard out of range. With shows like AI and other cultural media diversions it's no wonder the crap in crap out concept is is high. BTW I saw on the news that Guitar Hero has been permanently discontinued. Before any hurrah's should be heard from the opposition of it remember if you don't like stuff like that there will soon be something that is now ready to fill it's place.

  6. For me it's a personal thing with the interface and the sonic feedback. Staring at a screen just doesn't do it for me the way twiddling with physical controls does. It's not an analogue / digital thing. I (very) recently acquired both MeeBlip (digital) and Lancet (analogue) synth modules. And what excites me with both is that every aspect of the sound one can reasonably control is a physical thing. I can make stuff which sounds at least as good as a final recording and more quickly with a controller keyboard and a DAW but it's just not so much… *fun*. But if I were a fifteen year old? These Apple devices achieve exactly what I dreamed of being able to do at a price I might have been able to afford. That must be a good thing, surely?

  7. You can hear it if an artist hasn't earned it by learning their instrument. Don't try to cut corners with gadgets, it just ends up sounding bad.

  8. Would love to have a site just for modular synths, although I haven't found any which is more than just posting pictures or auctions. This one (http://navsmodularlab.blogspot.com/) at least sometimes some interesting content. I would also love to see a serious site about iPad music apps or music software in general with more in depth information than marketing, 'mine system is better than yours' etc. Well, I can't remember so much discussion around the Lemur like it is now with iPad. At the end the iPad is a nice CPU with quite good floating point performance, bad A/D-D/A circuits and an interesting user interface. It is obviously interesting for musicians, regardless if it is allowed to call it synth or not. We are just at the beginning of exploring what can be done with iPads, more or less like in the days where electronic circuits became cheap enough to build instruments which at least some musicians can afford.

  14. This is just a bad band… it has nothing to do with the instruments being used. Well, except for the vocal fx… those are bad regardless of who uses them.

  15. Hm, are software synths synths? Is a Virus a synth or 90% of everything today sold as synth? Or only analogue devices? But some are using ICs like CEMs? Well, better have a 'real' synth with discrete electronics, no ICs please. And it must be hand build. But only with through hole soldering, not the evil SMT stuff. Or better use tubes? Not sure anymore what synths are. So, I should better tune my harpsichord more often than my VCOs ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. The problem with any such news site is that it takes a lot of time and effort to write good articles, do the necessary research and stay in touch with your readers and the world at large. That's probably the main reason why most of the time we only see a few short sentences and copy&paste "journalism." That's not so bad, but I could very well do without obviously opionated pieces (like many of the iOS related posts on this site where people who don't get all the hype are ridiculed after a fashion — grudges don't mix well with reporting news, but, hey, we're all human, some just more so than others).

That said: If I had the time and energy (plus the necessary technical resources like a fast server with good connectivity) I'd gladly join the electronic music news circus filling in the gaps by writing about topics and news items that are usually "ignored" by other sites. But a single man can only do so much and without a good staff of regular contributors and editors such a project can not succeed.

  17. You didn't crack the riddle yet?

That's where the wholesome sleaze comes from.
No blame on the iWare for this one, it just… lends itself to such horrendae…

(*) Now *I* could see this 15 secs into the song, having hung around those black metal usenet groups in the days.

  23. Wow, the haters are thick on this one. Jeez guys, this looks like a group of people having fun playing with their techno toys. Yea, it's a tired song and they aren't going to win any prizes for musicianship, but I am sure that you can find far worse in a quick search of youtube. I've heard bar bands that wouldn't sound this good. Having said that, I couldn't watch the whole thing, but that would be true if it was Bon Jovi.

  24. I just don't understand why this type of thing always seems to make
it to Synthtopia. One thing is for sure, at about 52 seconds the "Drummer"
makes sure to get a good and creepy look at the singers ass.
