Online Realtime Music Collaboration With Ohm Studio – What Does It Mean?

Is online, realtime music collaboration going to be a big deal?

That’s the premise of Ohm Studio – a full-featured DAW for Mac & Windows that’s designed for online collaboration.

This video demonstrates a couple of musicians making music together online in Ohm Studio, which is currently in beta testing.

This seems like this could be the seed of something cool. Check it out and let me know what you think!

  1. Why do I get the feeling that there is going to be a lot of fighting going on here. Also, this sounds great, but there is already a music collaboration website (kompoz.com) but it doesn't seem to work out very well. I wonder how this can do better.

  2. I have a drummer that I love to work with who has an electric kit. We've tried a ton of silly set-ups to remotely collaborate on tracks, but sending huge projects back and forth is extremely clunky. When the contributions are segmented, as in, he's going to lay down the drums, and I'm going to do everything else, I think this software could be the silver bullet solution to our issue. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.

  3. Often when me and my mates are making music, we think of a few ideas simultaneously. We have to choose one and table the rest because only one person can be in the hot seat and that person can only do one thing at a time. I'm not saying I would change DAWs just for this feature, but it would be super handy to have.

  4. The no save function makes me a bit nervous. Your projects will forever be dependent on the availability of OhmForce's servers.

  5. I think it's a great idea. While I don't see many people using this as their primary DAW, it's great to have a way of sketching ideas with someone far away. My friend and I have often talked about creating a "real-time collaborative DAW" and failed to notice that it existed already.

  6. I have used/beta tested Ohm Studio for almost half a year now…I can tell you…it IS the wave of the future as far as collab’s online…the centralized DAW is very good…I use it as one of my primary DAW’s now…and I have Sonar/Cubase/Reason/Record/Predonus One Two etc….

Its is really cool cause there is a session chat that is very helpful and feels like you are actually in the same house, maybe not the same room…but recording audio, midi or using your favorite plugins are a breeze…with instant feedback (after you’ve recorded the track)…

You may ask how can one person with a ton of plugins play the same session as a person with no plugins?…with the freeze function…Like I have a session going on…I want to use Omnisphere, which no one else has in the session….when Im done recording my track with Omnisphere, all I have to do is hit the ‘freeze’ button and the other people can see and hear my track right away…

This DAW has so many possibilities, I play with people from England, France Italy…even Texas, where I was born…Im now living in California….and am doing a project with a childhood friend of mine from Texas….

Im am no way affiliated with Ohmstudio, just a dedicated beta tester, but when it goes public beta…give it a try….like any DAW, at first there is an easy learning curve, in this case…so give it a shot….its the next BIG thing in collab recording….trust me…..

by the way, I now even use it as my main DAW…..

    peace Harry Stiles
