Mail Order Monsters – Fairlight (Live Chiptunes)

This is a live performance, by Mail Order Monsters, of the song Fairlight, in studio at WKTV.

Here’s what they have to say about their approach:

We play exclusively through the ‘SID’ chip, taken directly from Commodore 64 computers and placed in a new hand built circuitry that allows greater flexibility, and compatibility with modern MIDI equipment. We utilize over 20 chips in our performances.

  1. How am I troll? I simply said it wasn't annoying. You're the troll. I find Mail Order Monsters pleasing to the ears, David.

  2. I'd like to make it clear that I find Mail Order Monsters to be totally awesome. When I said they weren't annoying I meant it ! This is the sort of thing I'd like to see more of on Synthtopia. I love Chip Tune!!!!! That sid chip sounds soooooo sweet!! Did you guys know Elektron made a SID Station a few years back? How awesome is that? More Chip Tune Please!!!!! Are there any chip tune tutorials online ?

  3. Great song but missed opportunity on the performance. They should at least be wearing Mario mushroom hats…anything but all boring black clothes and gear.

  4. No! Not M again! There are themes which are overused.
I think that their serious look contrasting with lo-fi 8-bit tune is quite cool.

  5. Does anyone know how they are controlling the sid's? I'm assuming they are using the midi box platform, but I don't see any DIY looking things in the video. Hardsid maybe? Something else? Just curious….

  6. Hi kid versus chemical, I just saw that synthtopia linked us here, and wanted to respond to your comment. We use MIDIbox, HardSID, MSSIAH and unmodified Commodore 64’s in our performances. Some photos of our custom gear are on our site here:

We are surprised to see some links to our videos, we just put them up on youtube a few days ago, and did not promote anything. We are still in the process of getting our information on the website, some things are missing. Really glad to see the comments here, and thanks to synthtopia for the link! We will be adding much more soon.

  7. Yep that's it! So glad to see someone that knows it. I've been a fan of his since the games came out, our group also does a cover of Wizardry (that he wrote as well) that blends into Ballblazer (another C-64 game song) We do a pretty even mix of our own original songs and C-64 game covers.

  8. Sorry I thought you were being facetious the way you stated it. It just seems like every time you turn around someones bagging something new at Synthtopia. My mistake and apologies.

  9. If it makes you feel any better the Urban Dictionary describes the word
Facetious as An asshole's word for "sarcasm".
So that makes me what? Lol
