Reason 6 – Pay What You Want Upgrade For Reason + Record Users

Propellerhead has announced a deal for customers owning both Reason & Record.

If you own the Record + Reason duo, you can name your own price on the upgrade to Propellerhead Reason 6.

Here’s the deal:

  • On September 30th, Reason 6, Reason Essentials and Propellerhead Balance are released. Owners of both Reason and Record will be invited to name their price for the Reason 6 upgrade.
  • The Pay What You Want offer is valid from the release September 30th, 2011, until October 31st, 2011.
  • Owners of both Reason & Record are eligible for this offer. If you own Record Reason Duo, or Record for Reason Owners, you qualify for this promotion.
  • Name your price. Just one of the new effects in Reason 6 would cost an arm and a leg as a standalone plug. But if you’re a student with limited funds, we understand.

See the Propellerhead site for details.

  1. Odd decision. I can understand that the Propellerheads want to give some kind of compensation to the people who picked up on Record.

But decisions like these also raise the question “What about the people who only want Reason and aren’t really waiting for Record” ? Because Reason users are facing a rather heavy increase in the upgrade fee (when compared to, say, the upgrade from Reason 4 to 5). While Propellerheads can claim that the “upgrade is big” Reason users can just as easily argument against it considering that not everyone will be using the Record part.

Sure, when going over the PH forums the majority seems to be using Reason and Record. But if there’s one thing I’ve quickly learned is that numbers can easily be deceiving.

Oh well, we’ll see how this turns out. I just hope for the Propellerheads sake that this won’t turn into a huge flamefest as happened when Record 1.5 & Reason 5 came out.

  2. Even if you don’t record guitars or other external instruments you should be happy to get Record integrated into Reason just for the improved mixing console. Also part of the reason it costs more for people without Record is because you have to buy a physical copy to get the usb key so they have to spend more on packaging, shipping, etc. where as if you already have the key you can just download it.

  3. I have been Props software user since day one – ReBirth days and have all their excellent software.
I will be definitely submitting the asking price for upgrade $99 – it’s worth every penny and than some… 🙂

  4. I call this damage control.

When they announced the upgrade price I was pissed. I’m a Reason 5 + Record 1.5 user. One of those guys who keep paying Propellerheads the yearly upgrade fee (€100-€120).
For users like me, Reason 6 only brings 3 effects and 64 bit support. This is Reason 5.5.
Charging €99 for this upgrade was greedy. I decided, like many others, to simply skip this upgrade.

They seem to realize they were losing quite a bunch of customers and decided to make a little damage control. This way they keep the unsatisfied for one more year. And this promotion is also available to users of Reason 4 + Record 1. How nice…
They should stop this “promotion”, offer the upgrade for free and just say “We’re sorry for being greedy”.

Reason is a very closed DAW, you can’t use plugins. What makes it unique is the hardware like approach with the cables on the back and the possibilities of making complex routings. But this was introduced on the original Reason. They need to innovate again, introduce plugin support (the old stability justification is…old), revamp the remote protocol (another forgotten innovation), incorporate Recycle and continue to develop workflow improvements (I like Blocks).

I’m not ashamed to say that I’m upgrading for €1. If they initially asked for €50 I would pay it, but after this mess, €1 is the price for behaving like they did. I still think that it’s €1 more that it should cost.

  5. Personally, I bought reason after using the 3.0 got the 4.0 and bought the record upgrade and I just wish I had more time to use it.

1 thing about the software is I think that there should be a much better controller than this portable CRAP!! OK I’m a bit old school but I like to have control over everything when it comes to basic track recording, live recording and specially mix down.

As for paying all this what almost $500 for both Reason and Record and now that I missed the ability to upgrade you want to chew another $169 from me for a software with a few new toys and 64 bit. This is a bit much I think and unfair!!!

I would pay $99 especially the fact that I’m not using it as much as I’d like to.. Lets face it… anything you do with this software takes a lot of time and there are many other softwares made much more simple and work on the fly as well as adapt with hardware. So weather your a DJ, producer, doing live recording, Studio or a mix down there are easier softwares out there. I do like the power of all the effects and creating ability Reason has but I have No Reason for an upgrade @ $169.. NO WAY!!!! BTW its also the principle 🙂

Peace.. its 1 hell of a software
